Hello, I’m artist/writer Declan Shalvey. I illustrate the graphic novel series INJECTION, and have written DEADPOOL VERSUS OLD MAN LOGAN,
and a creator owned graphic novel SAVAGE TOWN.

This is my newsletter.

ALL THE LATEST
Been working on a lot of covers recently, and took some days off to show a Marvel colleague around Ireland. I'm getting stuck back in to my mystery project. Still don't know what I can say more about it, but will just keep working away in the meantime.

Last week, I linked to a thread I posted on Twitter about certain publishers not paying their creators. There was rightly, some hubub. I don't think it's been resolved but through some contacts, I hear a lot of people were 'coincidentally' paid that day or the following day. I'm VERY glad that people are getting paid, I really wish it didn't have to come to the threat of exposure in order to do that. Hopefully the publisher/s in question will do better in future.

Former student of mine Paul Carrol shared a comprehensive spreadsheet to help comic creators keep track of their project expenses and profits. Check it out, I think it's going to help a lot of smaller creators (and me!) in future and hey, maybe think Paul for providing such a great resource by buying some of is work.
CREATOR OWNED
I'm due an update on creator owned work. I've been doing work for hire art, but working away on creator owned writing projects at the same time. Aside from INJECTION which I'll return to later this year, I've a few creator owned projects in the works...
  1. An already approved OGN with Image which is in the early stages.
  2. In pitch-stage. It's something I'm co-writing, the line art is done, colours and lettering to be done, as well as a cover I'm providing. Hoping to get that all together in the next few weeks and then pitch it.
  3. A project that I've written the pitch script for, it's with the artist, but they'll be busy for the next couple of months.
  4. A long-gestating idea I've been working for a pretty big artist but I've really dragged my heels on it, I should really take another look.
After all the writing I did last year, I was kinda hoping a work for hire gig would shake loose. As a writer, I feel the next challenge for me is to write something longer than 100 pages and I feel easier to do that on a work for hire gig, where worlds are established and need to keep developing. Also, an established audience can support a longer story, it's so hard to know if a creator owned book can last past 6 issues in the current market. I had 3 pitches with Marvel that haven't really panned out (for various understandable reasons) so if nothing is on my plate, I'm not going to wait around, I'll just make my own projects.
COMMISSIONS
I've wrapped up all my January commissions. I splashed out with a bit of colour for the above Wolvie one, even though that's something I should be charging more for. I just wanted to experiment a bit, and commissions are a great place to do that. I still have two that are long owed to people so will still be streaming for the next couple of Mondays. That might be it, though I'm considering taking more, if depends if I decide to make an appearance at an upcoming US show. If I do, I'll likely take some commissions to pay for my trip, I'll have to see. Speaking of conventions...
CONVENTIONS
I've announced two convention appearances, both in the UK. I'll be at Dumfermline in March, my first time at that show, I've heard great things....
And I'll also be returning to Portsmouth in May, after having a great time at last year's show.
It looks like I'll be making another big international trip this year, which is exciting. It looks like I'll be in two new countries this year, pretty excited about that.
As I suggested above I'm thinking about going to a US show in the next couple of months. I'll have decided by the next newsletter, so watch this space.

PEEK
It's been solicited but I haven't seen it online yet, so here is my variant cover for MEET THE SKRULLS #1. Do not share this online, this is an exclusive peek for you guys. I'm really happy with this one, one of those covers that came out just like I hoped it would.
