The VAI/CCI residency is open each year for applications from VAI members. The residency provides for a studio, accommodation, return flights, and a stipend. The residency is a collaboration with CCI Paris and VAI.⁠


Out Now! The VAN Podcast – Episode 3: Nathan O’Donnell and Marysia Wieckiewicz-Carroll

The VAN Podcast is a podcast series from Visual Artists Ireland.

Published every two months, The VAN Podcast comprises online conversations, recorded remotely, with various contributors to each issue of The Visual Artists’ News Sheet (VAN). This gives opportunities to discuss some of the ideas arising from published texts, while also offering insights into wider practice.

Episode 3 features an interview with Nathan O’Donnell and Marysia Wieckiewicz-Carroll, who developed a profile on their new publishing imprint, Numbered Editions, for VAN’s March-April 2021 issue, which had a loose thematic focus on artist publishing.

Nathan O’Donnell is a writer, researcher and a co-editor of Paper Visual Art Journal. He was previously an IRC Enterprise Postdoctoral Research Fellow, based between IMMA and Trinity College Dublin, and is currently Writer-in-Residence at Maynooth University. Nathan’s fiction and non-fiction writing has been widely published and he also teaches part-time on the MA Art in the Contemporary World programme at NCAD.

Marysia Wieckiewicz-Carroll is a writer, editor and independent curator based in Dublin. Marysia has organised a range of exhibitions and projects across Ireland and abroad, has worked as Assistant Curator at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, and is the founding director of the Berlin Opticians Gallery.

In December 2020, Nathan and Marysia published figure | ground – the first in an ongoing series of Numbered Editions, offering a rich set of visual and textual reflections on mapping and place.

Winners of the 2021 Golden Fleece Award Announced

The Trustees are delighted to announce the winners of the 2021 Golden Fleece Award are Aideen Barry, Bassam Al-Sabah, Maria McKinney, Lorna Donlon, Laura Fitzgerald and Sinéad O’Dwyer.

The announcement was made in a special video presentation celebrating twenty years of the Golden Fleece Trust and includes wonderful interviews with the artists: view here.

Each of the winners receives a Golden Fleece Award of €10,000.

2021 is an important milestone for the Golden Fleece Trust. It marks twenty years since the establishment of the Award through the bequest of its founder – the artist, educator and researcher Lillias Mitchell (1915-2020).

The mission of the Golden Fleece Award is to provide resources for practising visual, craft and applied artists to innovate and develop their artistic vision, in accordance with Lillias’ intentions as set out in her Letter of Wishes to her Trustees. In this document she states that: “My wish is to give artists a ‘boost’ in times of particular need…”

Creative practitioners across the island of Ireland have been profoundly impacted by COVID-19. The creative sector is in crisis, and individual artists and makers face exceptional challenges amid increased financial uncertainty. The future of Irish art, craft and design is at stake. This, surely, is a time of “particular need”.

In recognition of the exceptionally difficult circumstances experienced by Irish artists in the past 12 months, the Trustees of the Golden Fleece Award decided to celebrate Lillias Mitchell’s legacy by increasing the twentieth anniversary prize fund to €60,000. This gesture was made possible by a very generous bequest by the estate of engineer and artist Seán Mulcahy, whose father Richard Mulcahy had invited Lillias to open a Weaving Department at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin in the 1950s when he was Minister for Education.

The 2021 prize fund of €60,000 is the largest in the Award’s history, and makes it the most generous award open to both visual artists and craft practitioners in Ireland. A record 229 eligible applications were received for the Award this year, with 175 Visual Art entries and 54 Craft + Applied Art submissions.

The six winning practitioners demonstrated a wide breath of practice, exploring diverse relationships of art, craft, culture and science with a considered approach to materials and techniques. Job Vacancy | Programme Manager Services for cultural programme, South Dublin County Council

South Dublin County Council invites tenders for the provision of the services related to the management, administration and promotion of the Creative Ireland South Dublin programme 2021 and 2022.

The Creative Ireland programme is a five year all-of-government initiative to place creativity at the centre of public policy. It is guided by a vision that every person in Ireland
will have the opportunity to realise their full Creative potential. Please see the Creative Ireland South Dublin Culture and Creativity Strategy 2018-2022.

The services required include:

  • To deliver Creative Ireland South Dublin programme to a high creative standard, within budget and within prescribed timeframes as determined by the local authority and Creative Ireland.
  • Administration of arts projects, and tasks under the Creative Ireland South Dublin Programme including project information, administration of applications and Creative Ireland Portal reports.
  • Accept and respond to enquiries from artists, community bodies and other relevant parties in relation to the programme and project development.
  • Devise and implement an effective communications strategy for the Creative Ireland South Dublin programme 2021 and 2022.
  • Co-ordinate the gathering of photographic and film documentation of the initiatives funded under the programme, and/or the commissioning of documentation.
  • Ensure Council compliance with all regulations relating to procurement of services, management of budgets and health and safety, including child protection.
  • Attend national Creative Ireland meetings as required (Up to six times per year).
  • Provide activity reports as required by the Culture Team, review progress and plan next steps with the Culture Team. A reporting template will provided by South Dublin County Council’s Culture Team.

Founded in 2009, First Fortnight celebrated its 10th mental health and arts festival in 2021 and now seeks an experienced and dynamic CEO to lead the organisation into its next phase.
About First Fortnight

First Fortnight’s purpose is to challenge mental health stigma and promote mental health wellbeing nationally through art and culture. First Fortnight operates in Ireland benefiting the general public and artists who participate in its annual festival of arts events. In addition, the organisation provides creative therapies to homeless and vulnerable communities experiencing mental health difficulties in Ireland.

Founded in 2009 by David Keegan and JP Swaine, First Fortnight celebrated its 10th mental health arts festival in 2021. Over the last twelve years First Fortnight has made the first two weeks of each year synonymous with challenging mental health stigma and has achieved a significant public profile. The organisation is in receipt of core funding from the HSE’s National Office of Suicide Prevention and benefits from a broad suite of funding from across arts and mental health agencies. First Fortnight is now at a unique phase in its development and seeks to recruit a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation through this next phase of consolidation and sustainable growth.

Organisational Structure

First Fortnight is a charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee, governed by a voluntary Board of Directors / Trustees. First Fortnight undertakes two core activities in fulfilling its mission. The CEO is supported in their role by the Chief Operations Officer who manages all aspects of festival programme and delivery and by the Therapeutic Services Manager who manages the Centre for Creative Therapies. This role would suit a person with strong interpersonal, administrative, multi-tasking, digital and organisational skills with a love and passion for arts practice.

The candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. These projects will require the co-ordinator to be self-starting, self-motivating and extremely hard working. Evidence will be sought of these qualities in previous positions the applicant has held.

The ideal candidate will have at least three years relevant experience. References will be required and the position is subject to a three month probationary period.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Managing Director is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and operational management of Engage Art Studios studios facilities in both Churchfields and St Francis St, Orbital membership, Workshop and Gallery. This role demands excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills. Engage Art Studios has a long history of supporting artists and delivering an ambitious contemporary arts programme. The successful candidate will be expected to continue to develop and promote an excellent artistic programme which will be of benefit to Engage Art Studios, it’s member
and the wider community in the Galway Region. The role is part time, offering flexible working hours (25 hours or 3 days per week).

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operational management of Engage Art Studios Manage and maintain the organisation’s administrative and operational systems, including: the financial management, HR, Health and Safety, governance and compliance.
    Securing Funding from both Public and Private sources.
  • The Managing Director is supported by a dedicated Board of Directors, and an education coordinator.
  • Promote professional development opportunities for members through, for example, curatorial and artist exchanges, residencies, workshops and community outreach initiatives.
  • Management and overseeing of the Artistic Programme

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Manage and develop revenue streams, including earned income opportunities and public and private grant applications.
  • Liaise with administrative staff on budget planning and forecasting. Present bi-monthly management reports to the Board of Directors on the financial health of
    the organisation.

MAIN CRITERIA

  • A relevant third level qualification or minimum of 2 years relevant experience in a managerial, development or co-ordination role is essential, ideally within the creative sector.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary venue is desired
  • A strong awareness/ experience of the arts/ creative sector is required
  • Demonstrable experience of successful bursary/grant applications and/or fundraising experience is desirable.
  • You should be located within easy access of Galway City, Ireland.
  • A full driving licence is an advantage.

TERMS

  • Flexible working hours (25 hours or 3 days per week)
  • Some evening and/or weekend work is expected during busy periods with a time-off in lieu.
  • Annual salary will be €28,000 (pro-rata)
  • The contract will initially be for 8 months with the role being reviewed in January 2021.

Job Opportunity | Cultural Producer Research, Planning and Production Contractor at Offaly County Council

Offaly County Council is seeking to engage the services of a suitably qualified and experienced individual or collaborative team as cultural producer/s of an online seminar on a contract for services basis. The contract is for the research, planning and organisation of a series of events culminating in an online seminar which is innovative, engaging and imaginative in its delivery and use of digital platforms. A requirement of the brief is the organisation and facilitation of a series of collaborative events / workshops and open conversations with stakeholders that will lead up to and inform the online seminar. 

The online seminar is to take place in October 2021. The total fee for the cultural producer including relevant expenses is €18,000. 

Application deadline 30th April 2021. 

Background Art in the Landscape project: Offaly County Council in partnership with Mayo County Council and Visual Artists Ireland were awarded funding under the Arts Council’s Invitation to Collaboration Scheme 2020 for an Art in the Landscape research project that focused on Lough Boora Sculpture Park, Co. Offaly and the Tír Sáile Sculpture Trail, Co. Mayo. The principle aim of this project was to develop a report that would map the key steps needed for the future management / development of each site as well as key learnings for other local authorities and organisations. Terre Duffy of Duffy Consultancy was appointed as researcher for the Art in the Landscape project and a report was produced with the findings. A copy of the report will be made available on request. 

Following the completion of the report, the partner organisations have been awarded continuation funding under the Arts Council’s Invitation to Collaboration Scheme to organise a seminar to further explore questions that have arisen from the research and open the debate on art in the landscape. 

Online Seminar 

While this project is anchored in the two sites of Lough Boora Sculpture Park, Co. Offaly and the Tír Sáile Sculpture Trail, Co. Mayo, it is the intention of the partner organisations, informed by the findings of the Art in Landscape report 2021, to broaden the conversation from these two locations. The seminar should therefore explore the learnings and challenges from the research by broadening the discussion to a national and international audience. This seminar will focus on a discussion of how arts, culture, tourism and climate change priorities can align / work together and how this collaboration can inform future policy. 

The partners are particularly interested in how the seminar, through digital technology, can be engaging, interactive and innovative in its delivery and how it can facilitate the sharing of information and engagement in a variety of ways. 

The key audience for the seminar is broadly those interested in and working in the arts, culture, tourism and environment sectors; from people living locally who engage with art in the landscape to experts in Art in the Landscape – Contract for Services their field nationally and internationally. The cultural producer will expand on this audience base, to reach as wide as possible existing and new audiences, and include in the project proposal how they will do this, and the anticipated scope of potential audiences. 

Key objective of the seminar: 

  • To gather expertise across arts, culture, environment, tourism and community sectors from the perspective of project delivery, policy development and collaboration and to learn from national and international experts. 
  • To share knowledge, learnings and models of best practice that will inform future projects in this area. 
  • Highlight how the arts, tourism and environment sectors can work together to achieve the same objectives and influence policy. 
  • Highlight and include the artist’s perspective and best practice in commissioning. 

Cultural Producer’s Role 

  • The cultural producer will be engaged to work with the partnership to design and organise a range of events culminating in a seminar that will have a national / international reach. 
  • The cultural producer will explore ways of engaging partners, stakeholders and invited speakers in lead up to the seminar. For example, organise and facilitate a series of focused round table discussions / workshops / brainstorming events that will engage partners, stakeholders and invited speakers. 
  • The cultural producer will organise an online seminar for October 2021 that is innovative, engaging and imaginative in its delivery and use of digital platforms. 

Cultural Producer will be expected to: 

  • Write a detailed work plan for the delivery of the project in consultation with partners. 
  • Write an outline and timeline for delivery of the workshops and seminar: potential workshop / roundtable discussions with partners, research content, potential speakers and forms of delivery. 
  • Identify appropriate international speakers / partners for consultation. 
  • Conduct meetings/ discussions with partners and stakeholders to discuss progress of the project. 
  • Submit a finalised plan for the workshops / roundtable discussions and seminars for approval. 
  • Provide progress reports and updated schedules for feedback from partners. 
  • Use digital platforms in an engaging and innovative way to deliver the seminar and to facilitate the sharing of information and engagement in a variety of ways. 
  • Devise and manage a marketing plan (inclusive of digital marketing) for the event. 
  • The project will need to comply with the council’s GDPR policy, explain how this will be managed through the process. 
  • Delivery of programme to agreed schedule. 
  • Manage all administration in relation to the project. 
  • Evaluate the project from start to finish and produce an illustrated report summarising the outcomes. 

Please note all meetings will comply with current public health guidelines and take place online until guidelines change. 

Role of Project Partners 

  • Provide information and access to all documents generated to date. 
  • Support and guide the work of the cultural producer(s). 
  • Assist with facilitation of partner / stakeholder meetings. 
  • Provide contacts for key individuals or organisations; who engaged with the work in each local authority operational area and local contacts in the arts, culture, tourism and environment sectors. 

Timetable 

The project should commence as soon as practicable possible, upon signing a contract and delivery of the final seminar will be October 2021, with the facilitation of a series of collaborative events / workshops and open conversations to take place in time to inform the final seminar. 

The tender contract will be based upon delivery of project within seven months from signing the contract [This date may be reviewed if any unavoidable delays to timetable occur due to Covid-19 health crisis]. 

Budget 

Submitted budgets for cultural producer(s) fee should not exceed 18,000 euro, including travel, VAT and per diem. Please supply a budget as outlined below in ‘submitting your proposal’, the budget will be assessed competitively in terms of current artist payments rates (see VAI for guidelines). 

There will be an additional budget of 15,000 euro, which will be managed by Offaly County Council Arts Office, for items such as marketing, technology, speaker’s fees etc. which will not be required to form part of the cultural producer(s) budget, which should not exceed 18,000 euro.

Open Call | BIAS, Science Gallery Dublin

Science Gallery Dublin and partners ADAPT are inviting applications from designers and artists interested in AI, trust, ethics and justice for a new art/science commission to be showcased at Science Gallery Dublin’s upcoming season BIAS in September 2021.

This commission will be informed by and in partnership with the cutting-edge research taking place in ADAPT, a flagship research centre exploring the goal of a balanced digital society.

For this open call, we’ve got one thing in mind: don’t be a tool.

We’re looking for people interested in co-creating work mutually benefiting both the scientific research and the artistic practice.

We’re not looking for art/science collaborations involving an artist using science as a tool for presenting their work (technology or data) or science using art as a tool to communicate their work (visualisations).

You don’t need to send us a fully-formed proposal for this open call. Instead, answer the questions listed below to register your interest in the opportunity.

FORMAT:

If shortlisted, there will be two facilitated matchmaking sessions talking with the ADAPT team – exploring common themes between your work and interests, and theirs. At the end of matchmaking, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with one or more of ADAPT’s researchers to pitch a brand-new project / exhibit – three will be selected to be developed and showcased at Science Gallery Dublin’s upcoming season BIAS.

About ADAPT

ADAPT is the SFI Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology. The ADAPT Centre’s work is driven by a long-term goal of a Balanced Digital Society by 2030 and it is pioneering new Human Centric AI techniques and technologies including personalisation, natural language processing, data analytics,  intelligent machine translation, human-computer interaction, as well as setting the standards for data governance, privacy and ethics for digital content.

Examples of ADAPT research projects are:

BUDGET:

Awards up to €6,000 in funding will be offered, plus mentoring, consultancy and advice from expert scientists, and inside access to data and research labs where possible. This is a unique opportunity for the successful applicants to get an inside glimpse into cutting-edge science and receive input that can inform development of their future work.

BIAS is supported by the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab, bringing AI related scientific and technological topics to general citizens and art audiences in order to contribute to a critical and reflective society.

TIMELINE:

  • Deadline for application is Wednesday 14 April 2021 – 11.59pm IST

  • Shortlisted applicants notified by Wednesday 21 April 2021. Shortlisted applicants are invited to participate in an online matchmaking event. Applicants that are not selected will be informed by 21 April also.

  • Online matchmaking events in May 2021 (exact date TBC)

  • Successful matches (when researchers and designers/artists clearly indicate a preference to collaborate with each other) notified by Friday 21 May. The participants without a successful match will be informed as well.

  • Between 21 May and 4 June matched artists/designers and scientists collaborate to pitch a brand-new project / exhibit

  • Deadline for pitch is Friday 4 June

  • Successful projects will be notified by 11th June 2021

Deadline Reminder | ARC-LAB Gallery Curatorial Scholarship 2021

The LAB Gallery at Dublin City Arts Office and IADT are partnering to offer a unique ARC­­­­-LAB Gallery Curatorial Scholarship in the context of curatorial education at postgraduate level.

The ARC­­­­-LAB Scholar will work with the Curator of the LAB Gallery on programming and research into curatorial strategies and develop a self-initiated curatorial project at the LAB Gallery. The ARC­­­­-LAB Scholar will be funded as a full-time student on the IADT MA in Art and Research Collaboration (ARC ) which is an 18-month practical masters programme taught in the LAB. The outcome of their curatorial project will be presented in the LAB Gallery as part of the gallery’s public events programme in 2023.

The ARC-LAB Gallery Curatorial Scholarship award comprises a stipend of €15,000 and MA tuition fees of €6,000. The ARC­­­­-LAB Scholar will also be provided with a dedicated desk and research space in Dublin City Arts Office, mentorship and professional guidance from The LAB Gallery, and research supervision from IADT.

Science Gallery Bengaluru seeks interactive, participatory works for PSYCHE, an exhibition- season that explores the mind—and the complexities of thinking and feeling—in December 2021–January 2022. Why do we think? Why do we dream? Why are we emotional beings? Is intelligence and the ability to think and feel restricted to humans?

Researchers have grappled with the inner workings of the human mind, from mapping billions of neurons to trying to understand the intangible expressions of thought and consciousness. We have experimented on the human brain with drugs, hypnosis, genetic techniques, and more. The mind plays its own tricks through optical illusions, déjà vu, delusions and hallucinations, which, combined with the imagination and hormones, manifest in intriguing behaviours.

Neuroscientists, chemists, doctors, psychologists, philosophers, mathematicians, systems analysts all take us a few steps closer to unravelling the enigma of the psyche. It is worth noting that much of laboratory research to understand the human mind is, in fact, carried out on other living beings who exhibit degrees of decision making, planning, and emotion.

The mind is inextricably implicated in our perception of the world and our experience of it. Our actions, informed by this perception, continue to shape the world. Our thoughts and emotions likely create a sense of wellbeing or a lack of it, yet we do not fully understand the biological, psychological, or social underpinnings of our intellectual being.

The future of the mind could be stranger than fiction: weaponizing of emotions, extra-sensory perception, prediction of criminal behaviours or the wiping out of traumatic memories, Nothing, it seems, is impossible. Even machines need not be exempt from thinking or experiencing emotions in a manner similar to humans as we continue to replicate the human mind in-silico.

We at Science Gallery Bengaluru are looking to work with individuals or groups from across career and disciplinary backgrounds who are critically exploring the psyche through emerging research. Your submission can be an artistic or a scientific inquiry, or, preferably, both.  Science Gallery Bengaluru will collaborate with The Wellbeing Project to curate elements of the Open Call and the Psyche exhibition which will be then shown at The Wellbeing Summit in Bilbao, Spain in 2022. The Wellbeing Project is addressing the issue of the wellbeing and mental health of everyone working on the frontlines of social change.

WHAT BUDGET IS AVAILABLE?

Projects supported via the Open Call for the exhibition can typically be funded by Science Gallery Bengaluru up to INR 3,00,000 (including all costs of artist fees, materials, equipment, shipping, travel, taxes etc.). Public programme proposals can typically be funded between up to INR 1,00,000.

Please note projects of larger scale could be considered only where additional partners/funding can be secured. We enthusiastically welcome proposals that work to a smaller budget or have a larger budget and are part funded through other means.

Open Call | 191st RHA Annual Exhibition (Submission Fee)

The 191st RHA Annual Exhibition is Ireland’s largest and longest running exhibition of visual art. Open to all artists working in paint, drawing, print, sculpture, photography and architecture, the RHA Annual attracts a large public and critical audience. With sales in excess of €500,000 in 2020, the Annual is a key event of the art calendar for both public and private buyers of all levels. The open submission is vital to the strength and vitality of the RHA Annual. Works selected through the open submission process make up around 60% of the exhibition with the rest of the artworks from RHA Members and Invited artists. This year almost €70,000 of prizes will be awarded to exhibiting artists. This prize fund, one of the largest in Ireland, is awarded to artists recognised for works of achievement.

Residency | 2021-2022 CultureHub Residency Open Call, Los Angeles and NYC, USA

Yearlong residencies will take place between July 1, 2021–June 30, 2022 and will be anchored in either New York or Los Angeles, using a hybrid approach that uses both in person and online methodologies for collaboration and public engagement.

CultureHub envisions a world where technology amplifies our humanity rather than diminishes it. We support artists who critically examine technology from a diverse array of mediums and creative perspectives. The residency program is designed to support artists as they take risks and target specific areas of their project’s development.

Resident Artists will have access to the following support and opportunities:

  • A $2500 stipend for the development of their project, which can be used how the artist sees fit (i.e.: to obtain materials, pay collaborators, and to compensate the resident for their participation in the program).

  • Access to the CultureHub studio, equipment, and technical support, including the option to have 1 full week of dedicated time in residence at the studios in New York and Los Angeles, which are flexible spaces equipped with reconfigurable lighting, audio, video, and projection systems.

  • Assistance with photo and video documentation of the project

  • Amplify their work to the CultureHub community through our website, eblasts, and social media

  • Organize at least one public offering for the CultureHub community, which may take the form of a talk, performance, workshop, exhibition, etc.

  • Develop written documentation of their project and progress within the CultureHub residency

  • Attend regular meet-ups with the residency cohort and past residents

Residency | Curator in Residence at St John’s Theatre and Arts Centre, Co. Kerry

St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre with the support of The Arts Council Audience Development Programme invite expressions of interest from Artistic Curators for a residency award at St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre, Listowel, Co Kerry.

Curator in Residence Contract

The residency will run for six months, between May and October 2021.

Appointment will be via an application process which will be managed by St John’s Theatre and assessed independently.

The Fee will be €12,000 Plus €3,000 towards project work.

The Curator in Residence will work on a freelance basis and will invoice the Venue in two stages, July and September, with a project review after stage one.

Working hours will be agreed with the Artistic Director and may fluctuate depending on project. The first phase will entail networking, research and meeting with relevant personnel and organisations to enable the integration of the curator into the artistic community.

The residency will enable St John’s Arts Centre Theatre to nurture a deeper, enriched and socially engaged artistic and cultural practice in Listowel and its surrounding areas.

St John’s Theatre now wishes to reimagine and reposition itself as a creative hub for North of the County. The appointed Curator will research and propose approaches that the arts centre would adopt to centre it and increase its connections and relevance to the people of North Kerry. These approaches may take the form of residencies, commissions, community-based development days, artist awards and conversations to bring this engagement to life. The curator in residence programme will, itself, provide time and space for a Curator to research at a grassroots level with a view to generating active creative, engagement, in the town and its hinterland of North Kerry.

We aim to appoint a Curator who has experience of and insights into the challenges of rural areas and accessing people in sparsely populated areas. The appointment will be for an initial period of six months during which s/he will work closely with the Centre Director.

Description and role

St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre is particularly interested in the work of curators who demonstrate a commitment to and interest in rurality, isolation, nature and the environment, afforestation, diversity in rural contexts and the connections and common ground that exist between people regardless of where their location.

This is a challenging time for artists and communities alike. St John’s recognises the challenge posed to community engagement at a time of physical distancing, but we are also conscious of the urgent demands and increasing role of the arts in reducing isolation through creative provision and increased engagement.

We would like to play our role in creating opportunities for civic, social and community groups and individuals to grow new ideas and to stay active, engaged and connected and we firmly believe that a curator in residence programme will shape this role with and for us.

We are open to applications from curators of all disciplines and while the space does not house a dedicated gallery the curator could consider alternative and open space as sites in which art in the public realm can be realised in the town and throughout North Kerry.

Key objectives in creating this role for this period are as follows:

  • To work with St John’s Theatre to reposition it as a centre with relevance and connection beyond Listowel and into its rural hinterland.
  • To research possible further dimensions and new perspectives including new approaches to public engagement, in consultation with the Artistic Director.
  • To work and participate with the Directors on artistic projects as determined by grant allocations.
  • To identify and connect with communities to participate and engage with St John’s Theatre through expanded outreach initiatives and organisations and to reach new audiences.
  • Highlight the uniqueness of Kerry and of St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre and bring an ambitious contemporary approach that will acknowledge the past and now face the reality of contemporary living in the county.
  • Research and develop in the tradition of the great local literary voices like John B Keane and Bryan MacMahon and more, the rich seam of contemporary life stories and experiences of the people of North Kerry, we would like to delve into farming lives – new and past, young, and old, those ‘new to our parish’, their experiences and this ever-changing place.
  • Consider our own approach to rurality, isolation, nature and the environment.
  • Shape a new curatorial programme for St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre that forms part of our three-year strategy 2021-2024.

Eligibility

  • Curators based in Ireland.
  • Curatorial vision and track record with a knowledge of a range of media
  • Demonstrable curatorial experience ideally – not essential, desirable – in anarts facility context with a strong participatory focus.
  • Artists whose practice is collaborative or who have a strong interest indeveloping their collaborative practice.
  • Strong working knowledge of the contemporary arts landscape and practicein Ireland and strong network with artists and arts organisations across theCountry.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with artists, communities, and existingand new audiences.
  • Proven project management skills in planning and coordinating projects fromcuration through to delivery, with relevant experience of promoting andproducing events and programmes.
  • Knowledge of the artistic landscape in Kerry and outside of large urbancentres e.g., access to LCGA, Art Colleges
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Timeframe

April – advertisement and invitation to present for the position of curator in residence.

May – appointment of curator in residence based on a limited invitation followed by a research phase including meetings with communities and audit of spaces for use in creating and delivering programme – we anticipate that the curator will work all over North Kerry with St John’s Theatre as the creative hub for the overall residency.

May-July – research and beginning of pilot projects. Review with Artistic Director after first two months of residency. August – project work pilot continues, Curator in residence actioning engagement. Also, curator researching with Director, possible avenues of support for commissions and project development with St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre.

September – curator pilot project continues working together, public ‘moment’ for overall project in planning. Second review of Residency and the possibility if its continuance.

October – Residency finish with presentation to the Board of St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre.

DEADLINE REMINDER | Coláiste Chú Chulainn, Dundalk, Co. Louth

Coláiste Chú Chulainn is a co-educational, multidenominational learner–centred school. It is the aim of our school community to provide a comprehensive education in which every member of Clann Choláiste Chú Chulainn is encouraged to learn, develop and attain excellence.

The School’s Public Art Working Group have made the decision to commission a Permanent Artwork to be sited at the front of their school. A meaningful engagement process to involve some of their students is important to the school.

Budget: €54,000. This includes the costs of any materials, artist’s fees, design development, artists’ insurance, supply and installation, signage, travel, and any other costs incurred in the production of the project / artwork.

The PAWG would like that you are considerate of the following elements when you consider applying for this commission.

– An imaginative and engaging permanent artwork to be sited outside the front of their school building
– A meaningful creative process that will involve and engage some of their 640 students.
– The history of the school and it’s location being in close proximity to what was the ‘Great Northern Railway Line. The connection to ‘Clarke’s shoes’. The school having been the centre of the community as a centre for sports, education, music and arts and also a meeting place.
– This school is host to a ‘modern Irish’ population, students from al around the world are part of it’s family as well as students from local urban and rural environments.
– The name of the school is important as a link to a local Irish hero.
– The school centres around the idea of being a ‘family’.
– The school is a family of 640 students, 8 hens and has a special needs area called ‘An Tearmann – The Sanctuary’.

Various approaches and levels of engagement are welcomed as part of this Per Cent for Art project. Collaborative partnerships are also welcome, should artists wish to partner with another artist for this project but a joint application would need to be submitted at Stage 1.

The Commissioning Process:

The selection process will take the form of a Two Stage Open Competition. It is open to all interested professional artists at any stage of their career or experience. Selection will be based on the information supplied, establishing the competence of the artists to carry out this commission. No designs or detailed proposals are required in Stage 1.

Stage 1

Artists are invited to express their interest in being considered for this project at the first stage of this commission. Artists may do this by completing the application form and submission of a CV and images / details of recent relevant works / projects.

Stage 2

From the completed Stage 1 applications; a shortlist of artists will be selected by panel jury. A Stage 2 brief will be available to shortlisted artists and a site visit is expected at this stage.

Coláiste Chú Chulainn reserves the right not to proceed with any submissions received.

Selection Panel:

The Selection Panel will consist of four members of the Public Art Working Group and two Professional Artists and will be chaired by the Curator / Project Manager.

Project Delivery Timeline:

It is anticipated that the project would commence during 2021 and be completed by the end of 2021 or early 2022. The artist should demonstrate their ability to fulfil this timeframe. The final timeline will be agreed with the commissioned artist at contract stage.

Site Visits:

Site visits will be arranged for shortlisted artists at Stage 2 of the commissioning process. Should site visits not be possible, a virtual site visit will be facilitated. Site Drawings will also be made available to shortlisted artists.

Public Art Commission | N81 Glenview Roundabout, Tallaght SDCC

South Dublin County Council would like to invite proposals for a highly visible, sculptural artwork at Glenview Roundabout, Tallaght on the N81. The commission is part of a large scale infrastructure project N81 Landscape Improvement Scheme and will be the first of three commissions in specified locations along the route.

This initial project at Glenview Roundabout should be a distinctive inviting gateway piece that marks the main avenue of approach into Tallaght town centre, the business and residential heart of South Dublin County. Submissions should demonstrate the County’s energy and dynamism, reflected in new residential developments, re-developments and increasing cultural diversity, in a fresh and colourful way. The County’s rich history with its young and vibrant present, are key to the identity of the County.

N81 Public Art Commission Route

It is planned to commission three public art works as part of the N81 Landscape Improvement Scheme at three specified locations.

Identified on the map are the 3 key locations where public art commissions are proposed along the length of the N81. Photos and site maps are included in the Artist Brief, Appendix 2.

  • Location A: Jobstown, West Tallaght
  • Location B: Entrance to Sean Walsh Memorial Park, Tallaght Village
  • Location C: Glenview Roundabout, Tallaght

 

It is hoped the artworks at the three locations will reinforce the sense of a route, which gives insight to the characteristics of the area. These could be a series of works or individual works which are linked visually or by a theme. As part of this two stage commissioning process for N81 Glenview Roundabout, Tallaght, artists may also present outline concepts for linking their proposal to some or all of the other commission locations.

In commissioning an artist for Location C Glenview Roundabout, South Dublin County Council hope to appoint this artist as preferred candidate for some or all of the additional commissions. A Development Stage will follow with the preferred candidate and South Dublin County Council to approve proposals for additional artworks/projects.

It should be noted that South Dublin County Council will reserve the right to launch an alternative commission process for any of the two additional locations and may appoint different artists to each commission following Stage 2 or Development Stage.

Finance

The value of the initial commission at Location C – Glenview Roundabout is €50,000. This amount is fully inclusive of all costs including fees to the artist, any necessary research, production/realisation, installations, insurance, documentation, maintenance file and VAT.

The two additional commissions at Locations A and B, will have a budget of €45,000 each. Further details to be finalised at Development Stage.

Selection Process 

This is an open submission 2 Stage competitive process. Stage 1 is open to any artist. It is an initial expression of interest process that will result in the shortlisting of a maximum of 5 artists who will progress to Stage 2.

All Stage 2 shortlisted artists (maximum of 5) will be paid a fee of €1000 for completing Stage 2 of the submission process.

Artists interested in submitting Stage 1 applications should complete the online application form that will request:

  • Summary of your proposal for the commission at Location C Glenview Roundabout, Tallaght (max 50 words)
  • Outline your concept and how you will approach to the commission (max 500 words)

Deadline Reminder | ‘Reflections’ Temporary Outdoor Artwork for Clonmel Junction Arts Festival

For the 20th anniversary festival Clonmel Junction Arts Festival (3 -11 July 2021) are working with project partners South Tipperary Arts Centre on a visual arts project entitled ‘Reflections’.

If the arts hold a mirror up to society, who are we in 2021?

Artist Brief: There are two separate briefs – one a temporary outdoor public artwork and the other a gallery exhibition/installation at the Arts Centre; both responding to the 2021 theme of Identity (What’s in a name?). Proposals will be assessed both from an artistic viewpoint and from evidence of feasibility and deliverability.

Reflections: Outdoor artwork brief

This award is for a temporary outdoor artwork or time-based event, including but not limited to installation, street art and mural work as part of Clonmel Junction Arts Festival 2021 in partnership with South Tipperary Arts Centre. The piece is expected to be in place for a year (although this can be discussed, depending on the proposal).

Information Session: An information session on the background of the project and the commissioning strategy will be held via Zoom for interested artists on Tuesday 2nd March, and will be available to view until the deadline on Monday 22nd March. (email in...@southtippartscentre.ie to register)

Finance

For temporary outdoor public artworks, artists are invited to submit budget proposals up to a maximum of €6,000. Budgets are inclusive of all artist fees, material costs, production and travel and expenses. The partners (Clonmel Junction Arts Festival & South Tipperary Arts Centre) will provide support in the form of marketing /publicity and technical advice if required. Applicants are responsible for any costs related to open call.

  • Specifications and timescale to ensure that the budget and deadline will be met.

  • Documentation of other relevant artworks completed.

The artistic policy of Clonmel Junction Arts Festival is to draw inspiration from the town of Clonmel, reflecting the stories and events that have shaped us and that continue to influence our lives.

The Board of Management of Coláiste na Coiribe wishes to commission public artwork(s) under the Per Cent for Art Scheme, funded by the Department of Education and Skills.

Coláiste na Coiribe operates under the auspices of the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB). The school was founded as an all-Irish, co-educational, post-primary school in 1992 on Claddagh Quay, west of the city. In 1993, the school moved to the Tuam Road, east of Galway city.

The school’s ethos is captured in the images in our school crest: 3 of these symbolise Irish culture – the shamrock, the Claddagh ring, a symbol of the best of Galway craftsmanship and the Galway hooker a symbol of the importance of sailing and the sea in the coastal communities of Galway city and south Connemara from which our student body come from. The symbol of the book celebrates learning and high academic achievement which is a key feature of school life at Coláiste na Coiribe.

The sea permeates life in Galway and our school is located close to Galway Bay which can be seen from some of locations within the school. Many of our students and staff live by and travel along the coast on their daily journey to and from school. Our school is on a green field site in the middle of a dense urban residential area. We want the commissioned artwork/s to reflect the history of the location and also to serve as a connector to the wider community.

The commission is open to all art forms for this project, with the proviso that any physical artwork within the grounds of a second level school needs to be robust and have regard for public health and safety. An Ghaeilge/The Irish language is the founding cornerstone of our school and we wish to celebrate it within our school and community. The artwork/s must reflect the ethos of the school. The commission must include a meaningful contribution and participation from the students in our school. Collaboration with the student council and arts department will form part of the Stage 2 process. Artwork is to be completed during the school year 2021/2022, or if an ongoing the project may be extended over a longer period subject to agreement between artist and school board of management.

Selection will be a two-stage process and will be made by a panel, based on the information supplied by the applicant. Outline proposals are required for stage 1.

Stage 1

Applicants must submit

  • Stage 1 Form
  • A plan outlining general ideas for the commission and the artistic concept of the proposed work. (Please limit your response to 1500 words and 10 images)
  • An up-to-date C.V.
  • Selection of examples of recent work (web links or e-file)

  • Examples of previous commissions and/or references

All submissions will be assessed, and a shortlist will be formed.

Stage 2

The shortlisted candidates who move to stage two will be paid a concept development fee of €500 (including VAT and all other charges) to submit an outline of their proposal and concept. The proposal will include a detailed breakdown of all costs.

Please note that Coláiste na Coiribe reserves the right to commission at stage two or not to commission from entries received and to re-advertise, directly invite, directly commission or to select more than one submission for commission and to divide the budget accordingly.

The Selection Panel will consist of nominees from the school community and an external artist.



Open Call | Éirím Inniu – I Arise Today, Irish Language Week 2021, Derry City and Strabane District Council

To mark Irish Language Week 2021, Derry City and Strabane District Council would like to commission an artist to develop a new and original piece of work inspired by an excerpt from the Gaelic verse ‘The Deer’s Cry’, which is attributed to St Patrick.

An award of up to £1000 will be granted to one successful artist. This project is funded and supported by the office of the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Artists are invited to submit a proposal outlining how they would create a new and original artwork in response to the theme in their chosen art-form and featuring the text of the verse.

The artist must be able to submit a digital version the finished piece of work (e.g. digital video format, digital image format or digital audiovisual or multi-media project) in order to be eligible for hosting/presenting digitally on the web.

The completed work must incorporate either the Old Irish or Modern Irish verse, or indeed both. The English verse may also be included. The artist can be creative about how the text is included, whether visually or as a spoken or sung lyric, but the verse must be evident in the piece.

Applications from individual artists and/or collaborative proposals are welcome.

Open Call | Arts Council Open Call Award 2022 Phase 1

An Open Call to the artists and arts organisations of Ireland to create collaborative ground-breaking public-facing projects of ambition, impact and scale that encourage discourse, provocation or response to place and identity as part of contemporary Ireland.

Open Call is a programme for artists and arts organisations to develop and shift their practice and profile work for the public on a national scale, creating high-profile arts central to people’s lives.

Within the context of this award, collaboration refers to working with other artists or organisations, or may refer to collaboration with communities of place or interest. Projects of ‘scale and ambition’ is understood to mean work that is impossible to achieve in your current practice, significant in vision, irrespective of physical, temporal or quantitative scale.

Projects proposed in response to the Open Call may be in any artform or be cross-disciplinary or interdisciplinary.

Funding up to €400,000.

Deadlines

The application window for the next round of Open Call (Phase1) will open on 30 March. The deadline for this Scheme is 5.30pm on Thursday, 29 April, 2021. Applications will be accepted through the Arts Council’s Online Services Website.

Application process

The application process will take place in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Initial project proposals will be assessed by the Arts Council executive, and a shortlist of candidate projects will be drawn up (at the end of Phase 1) and invited to apply to Phase 2.
  • Phase 2: Detailed project-proposal application: those whose proposals have been shortlisted in Open Call 2022 Phase 1 will be invited to apply to Open Call Phase 2 to provide a more developed proposal for an international jury to assess. A final shortlist will be selected by the international jury (at the end of Phase 2) for interview in phase 3.
  • Phase 3: Presentation and interview: those candidates selected for Phase 3 will be asked to attend an interview and make a presentation for the international jury based on their Phase 2 information. (The jury will remain the same for phases 2 & 3.)

Time is provided for those shortlisted at the end of Open Call 2022 Phase 1 to develop their initial proposals as a new application to Phase 2.

Who can apply?

The award is open to individuals and organisations that are resident in the Republic of Ireland. (There are certain exceptions where the Arts Council may deem eligible applications made by those based outside the Republic of Ireland. However, before admitting as eligible any such application, the Arts Council would need to be satisfied that the outcomes of any such proposal would benefit the arts in the Republic of Ireland.)

As part of its Equality, Human Rights & Diversity policy, the Arts Council is committed to offering equality of access, opportunity and outcomes for all potential applicants, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, civil or family status, religion, age, disability, race or membership of the Traveller Community, or socio-economic background. In this funding scheme the Arts Council particularly welcomes applications that are representative of the diversity of Irish society, including but not limited to any of the characteristics outlined above, and/ or initiatives that deliver equitable opportunities or outcomes for those involved.

Who is the applicant?

The applicant is the person or organisation that will receive any grant offered and who will be required to accept the terms and conditions of that grant.

Open Call Award 2022: Guidelines for Applicants

Any grant offered will only be paid into a bank account held in the name of the applicant. All documentation provided must be in the name of the applicant (individual artist or arts organisation) e.g. if you apply to the Arts Council for funding under the name Máire de Barra, then all documentation, including bank and tax details, must be in that name. Variations such as Mary Barry or Barry Studios are not acceptable.

Who cannot apply?

Those who are not eligible to apply include the following:

  • Individuals currently in undergraduate or postgraduate education or who will be during the period for which this award is offered
  • Applicants who have previously made an unsuccessful application to any Arts Council scheme for the same proposal, unless directed to apply
  • Applicants that make a funding request for less than the minimum award of €100,000
  • Applications for a project proposal that commences before January 2022 (this excludes research undertaken and partnership discussions required to prepare application information)
  • Those whose proposed activities would be better suited to another Arts Council funding scheme.

In the context of the ongoing uncertainty created by COVID-19, and the Arts Council’s commitment to raising standards of excellence in the making of art, the purpose of the Agility Award is to support professional artists and arts workers to:

  • Develop their work, and/or
  • Develop their skills, and/or
  • Create new work, and/or
  • Present new work.

This award is open to freelance artists and arts workers at any stage in their career.

Open Call | Lismore Castle Arts Stable Studio Awards 2021

Lismore Castle Arts welcomes applications from artists for their Stable Studio.

The studio is available for free with mentoring and support from Lismore Castle Arts. Each award will also include a stipend of €400.

The studios are available for 1 month periods throughout 2021:

1 – 30 July;
2 – 31 August.

VAI Webinar | Working with Curators (14 April)

It is extremely beneficial for artists to have their work seen by curators. Outside of the potential for exhibitions, there is also the valuable opportunity to engage in a critical discussion of their practice.

The webinar will give you an insight into how curators may engage with your work and interpret it differently to your expectations. You will gain an understanding into the role of a  curator and their processes that will better equip you to identify curators you would like to work with and how you might approach them.

The curator may introduce the artist to other avenues of thought, and on a more practical level to information on opportunities outside of your area.

Brendan Fox is an independent curator, artist, and writer. He has curated the work of hundreds of Irish and international artists in a broad spectrum of settings. He was project co-curator at Nag Gallery, Dublin, resident curator at Talbot Gallery, Dublin and is the Co-founder, Director/Curator of Foundation Arts Festival in association with the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He has devised numerous gallery and offsite exhibitions and has curated from the national collection at IMMA, Dublin. He has been the invited curator at Limerick School of Art and Design and the National College of Art and Design where he facilitated with both B.A. and M.A. students.

Fox has allocated funding and awards to artists and artist-led projects through his Foundation Awards initiative in association with Offaly County Council and the National Arts Council of Ireland. He has facilitated workshops with the RHA, Goethe Institute, NCAD, VTOS Adult Education, LSAD, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, UCD and Trinity College Dublin with Ph.D. students at The Innovation Academy. He is currently devising exhibitions for his upcoming 2020 project as part of his MA in Art in the Contemporary World at NCAD.

In this webinar, Loney Abrams revisits a seminal essay from 2013 that idealistically proposes the virtual exhibition as a hopeful alternative to the gallery, granting artists greater exposure, autonomy, and freedom in the art world. Eight years later, amidst a global pandemic that has accelerated the virtualization of the art world, Abrams revisits her essay to ruminate on the drawbacks and opportunities of navigating the art world as an artist online in 2021. Drawing upon her own experiences as an artist, curator, and educator, she offers advice for artists hoping to engage audiences and build communities in a post-internet world.

Presenter Bio:

Loney Abrams (b. 1986, Boston, USA) is an artist, educator, curator, and writer currently living in New Fairfield, Connecticut with her collaborator Johnny Stanish. She and Stanish run Wretched Flowers, an ongoing foraged floristry project that researches our ethnobotanical relationship to land. She and Stanish previously ran Hotel Art Pavilion, a New York-based art gallery targeting online audiences. Abrams previously worked as Editor-in-Chief at Artspace Magazine in New York and is currently teaching at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where she received her MFA in 2013.

Online Workshop | World Autism Month: Drawing Workshop for Adults with the National Gallery of Ireland

The National Gallery of Ireland is collaborating with the national autism charity AsIam for a live online drawing workshop for adults as part of World Autism Month. Taking inspiration from the Gallery’s collection of still life drawings, artist Eileen O’Sullivan will demonstrate how to draw a composition made up of everybody objects.

The event will be focused on creating an abstract collage using a layered technique. We will explore the use of different materials and how to create nice patterns that works well together.

I will lead the workshop offering guidance and knowledge of my processes and techniques for manipulating images.

A variety of unusual colourful materials will be used as washi tape, stickers and pens, including vintage photographs and/or postcards.

I encourage you to use what you already have at home, check the materials list below to have an idea of what you will need.

  • Paper scraps to create big dots (from vintage, recycled or repurposed paper of any kind)

What happens when we turn the purpose of a fashion advertising image into a more deep and meaningful message?

During the class we will explore the infinite possibilities in doodling over a magazine page using eye catchy decorations, but we will not stop at it. The idea is to give to the picture a new message and switching it into a fun, humorous, feminist or more personal protest message.

I will lead the workshop offering guidance and knowledge of my processes and techniques, with a step-by-step guide to realise each one of them.

Online Workshop | Paint With Washi Tape With Naomi Vona

The event will be focused on altering by hand vintage portraits, giving a brand new life to these “forgotten memories”.

I will lead the workshop offering guidance and knowledge of my processes and techniques for manipulating images using the colourful washi tape.  

Materials list

  • Vintage or contemporary photos, you can use magazine cut outs as an alternative (you can pick portraits, landscapes or any other topic you like). I recommend glossy finish pics on a thick paper.

Level 2: Develop Your Photography Skills at Belfast Exposed

This practical, hands-on course is designed for beginners, those wishing to refresh previous knowledge, and those who have completed ‘Level 1: Introduction To Your Digital Camera’.

You will learn new camera settings and develop your photography skills, focusing on how to use white balance, metering, bracketing, focusing, histogram and more. This course will also enable you to apply a practical and theoretical knowledge to help you use a digital camera effectively and creatively.

What you will need

– A digital camera with manual controls.
– We recommend you complete ‘Level 1: Introduction To Your Digital Camera’.

What you will learn

– A quick refresh of the exposure triangle taught in ‘Introduction To Your Digital Camera’.
– Which white balance setting to select in specific lighting situations to make the photograph warmer or cooler.
– How to choose the correct metering mode to control the exposure in unusual light situations by measuring the amount of light entering the camera.
– How to use bracketing to take multiple photographs of the same scene, resulting in one image using the current settings and the rest underexposed and overexposed.
– Which focusing mode to choose in specific situations to ensure the subject is sharp, whether it is still, moving or difficult to focus on.
– The ability to understand your camera’s histogram as a graphical representation of the tonal values of your photograph.
– An introduction to your camera’s flash, filters and file formats.

Level 1: Introduction To Your Digital Camera at Belfast Exposed

This practical, hands-on course is designed both for beginners and those wishing to refresh previous knowledge.

You will get an introduction to your camera’s manual controls, focusing on how to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO to correctly expose your photographs. This course will also enable you to apply a practical and theoretical knowledge to help you use a digital camera effectively and creatively.

What you will need

– A digital camera with manual controls.

What you will learn

– How to work your camera in full manual mode.
– How to use aperture, shutter speed and ISO to create the correct exposure for a given photograph.
– How to use aperture to control the depth of field (the area in focus) and whether to use a shallow or large depth of field depending on the scene.
– How to use shutter speed to either freeze the subject or capture motion in your photograph.
– How to use ISO to change the sensor’s sensitivity to light, to either brighten or darken the photograph.
– A variety of compositions and framing techniques to consider when taking a photograph.
– An understanding of colour theory and how to create balanced colour combinations, and how to use colours to evoke certain feelings, moods or emotions.

Photoshop Basics Workshop at Belfast Exposed

This technical course is aimed at beginners to Photoshop and those wishing to refresh previous knowledge.

The course will introduce you to the Photoshop interface and will cover the basic Photoshop features such as working in layers, and techniques that you can use to adjust, correct and enhance your photographs.

What you will need

– No requirements. We provide iMac computers with Photoshop and images for you to use during the course.

What you will learn

– Basic overview of the display, interface and controls of Photoshop.
– How to use and work with layers.
– How to use exposure adjustments such as levels, curves etc.
– How to use colour adjustments such as saturation, colour balance etc.
– How to use the dodge and burn tool effectively.
– How to use tools such as clone stamp, spot healing brush etc.
– How to size and save your photographs for both print and web use.

Level 3: Studio Photography at Belfast Exposed

This practical, hands-on course is designed for intermediates, and those who have completed or are already familiar with the topics covered in ‘Level 1: Introduction To Your Digital Camera’ and ‘Level 2: Develop Your Photography Skills’.

You will gain knowledge of studio lighting setups and techniques to enable you to take quality studio images from family portraits and stylish fashion shots, to interesting still lifes and eye-catching products. You will learn how to set up the lights and various lighting techniques that you can easily replicate in your home as the cost of studio lighting has fallen dramatically.

What you will need

– A digital camera with manual controls, or film camera.
– We recommend you complete ‘Level 1: Introduction To Your Digital Camera’ and ‘Level 2: Develop Your Photography Skills’.

What you will learn

– Gain knowledge of studio lighting setups and techniques to use in portrait and product photography.
– Perform the lighting controls by correctly using the model light and flash lighting.
– Learn the following light setups: high key lighting, low key lighting, broad lighting, short lighting, butterfly lighting, and fill lighting.
– How to create soft, flattering light for the subject in your portrait.
– How to correctly compose your portrait or product photograph.

This is a fully comprehensive puppet fabrication course for anyone interested in building a puppet for stop motion animation.

This course includes all materials which are posted out to you prior to the course starting and on this course you will learn the following.

  • How to design, plan, size and build wire and jointed armature
  • How to fill and shape your puppet
  • How to design, rig, sculpt, paint and create jointed, rigged shoes for animation with tie downs

HAUMEA | Online 7-week Ecoliteracy Course for Creatives and Art Professionals

This course is for creative practitioners and art professionals who a seeking a comprehensive foundation in ecological knowledge for their work.

The course is suitable for workers in any creative field:
visual arts, music, poetry and literature, filmmakers, community artists, social art practitioners, dance/bodyworkers, curators, art educators and administrators

The course best suits mid-career or post-graduate creative workers who are looking to bring a deeper understanding of ecoliteracy into their work (some have describe it as an ‘mini MBA’): experienced creative practitioners, art educators, community artists, those with degree and post-graduate art qualifications – we have had doctoral level arts practitioners who have benefitted from this course

Call for Participation | Pluid Project – Call out to all artists, makers and creators

A national callout to every artist, maker or creator in the land to join together/ collaborate to create Pluid – a national comfort blanket by submitting a single 15cm X 15cm original art work in any medium.

The individual art works will be curated and assembled like crocheted granny squares of old and then exhibited at a venue (to be confirmed) when restrictions allow in Midsummer, June 2021.

We hope that the call-out in its simplicity and the limited scale of artworks will encourage artists, makers and creatives in every medium and discipline to respond, participate and collaborate.

Since our initial call out in February we have been overwhelmed by the response and enthusiasm from artists and creatives to the Pluid Project. Thanks to all the artists who have already submitted artworks. We want to continue to grow the national comfort blanket so this is a renewed call to artists to participate and submit work by 1st May 2021.

Following the exhibition of Pluid, artists will be invited to donate their works to be auctioned for Pieta House.  Alternatively arrangements can be made for the works to be returned/collected.
