Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a lovely bank holiday. Welcome to this week’s newsletter, with an update on upcoming online events from Miriam, our senior awards and events producer; advice and resources during the Covid-19 crisis; and our around the industry section.

Following our survey, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport got in touch asking for further details saying that they had found the data collected “extremely illuminating”, so thank you so much to everyone who took the time to fill in our questionnaire, because it is really important we can collect and feedback this important information to the government, and in the process, I hope make a difference.

As ever, we have a packed events programme, so huge thanks to the WFTV events team and personally, I am much looking forward to interviewing Mandy Chang, BBC Storyville Editor in our Meet the Commissioner session on 3 June.

Many thanks and stay safe.

Best
Liz

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all enjoyed a sunny bank holiday and some fresh air, wherever you may have spent it. It started off a grey morning here today, but is lovely again now – I’m currently sitting outside with my laptop in a foil lined cooler bag, which works an absolute treat!

Once again, we’re heading into a couple of busy weeks of online events, with a packed week this week, and a couple of exciting new announcements for next week. First up, on Wednesday 3rd June Beating Imposter Syndrome with Sue Belton. This is a really helpful workshop, which I’m sure lots of us could find useful at the moment. It’s easy for niggling thoughts to take over when we’re our own echo chambers, so if you’re available on Weds eve, then I would certainly recommend tuning in for some positive re-adjustment – we will all be there! And then on Thursday at 14:00 we’ve got another instalment of our successful Meet The Commissioner strand; in this session Liz will be in conversation with  Mandy Chang, Commissioning Editor BBC Storyville and Head of Documentary Acquisitions who I’m sure will be shedding some light on the ever changing commissioning landscape.

As ever, it’s always lovely to have you join our online events, and we’ve been getting a fantastic response. Please keep sharing your ideas via our post-event surveys, they really are helpful.

See you all soon,

Miriam

Monday 01 June 2020

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, with an update on upcoming online events from Miriam, our senior awards and events producer; and our around the industry section.

At WFTV, as an organisation that fights hard to promote fairness and justice for all, it was heartbreaking to see the news from the US over the weekend and an important reminder of how much still needs to change to create a fairer and just world. And in our own industry, there is a long way to go before we can create a truly diverse film and TV sector. There is clearly still much work to do.

And some news from WFTV, sadly we will be saying goodbye to Miriam, who will be leaving us shortly. She was planning to go in April, but very kindly stayed on to help us transition into our new online events world.  So, on behalf of all the team at WFTV, I’d like to say a huge thanks to her for all her commitment, drive and energy in transforming and driving forward the WFTV events and awards. I know from so many members how much they have all appreciated the fantastic online events that Miriam and the team are providing during this uncertain time. We will all really miss her and look forward to giving her a proper “send off” when we are all able to meet up face-to-face again!

The good news, is that we are hoping Miriam will be able to come back to freelance for our awards ceremony, so she won’t get rid of us that easily! And in next week’s newsletter, we will be introducing our new Senior Events and Awards Producer who will join WFTV on 15 June.

Many thanks and stay safe.

Best
Liz

Hi Everyone,

Hope you’re all doing OK, managing the incoming summer weather and hopefully feeling like there are positive things on the horizon, it’s been a weekend of mixed emotions that’s for sure.

The riots in America have dramatically changed the Western news discourse, it feels like we’ve been in a haze of Covid-19 headlines since March and I’ve certainly lulled myself into a very small, safe bubble – working from home and only leaving the house for shopping; but the reality of the world can’t be ignored, nor can the divisions on our own doorstep. As a white woman with a (loud) voice, I consider it my responsibility to use my privilege to help others. As an organisation which, in its essence, exists to level the playing field, we have to work harder for those at the margins and through our Awards, Mentoring Scheme and Events Programme we endeavour to do this. In our landscape of Film & TV, I think there is currently a growing risk of increased marginalisation when productions pick-up again, it’s easy to take the path of least resistance when you’re under pressure, and I think it’s safe to assume that those already in strong positions will be at the front of the line when the work starts to build. Please consider this when you’re crewing up.

Without sounding too much like my own party political broadcast, I also wanted to let you know that I’m leaving WFTV (hopefully I'll be back to freelance the Awards!), and will be handing over my current role as of Monday 15th. We're looking forward to introducing the newest member of WFTV next week, and I have no doubt she will do an incredible job and further drive forward the progress that we continue to make. I would LOVE to keep in touch with you all though so please add me on LinkedIn.

We still have a jam-packed schedule of events, so please head over to our events page and check them out, there are more being added daily.

See you all soon,

Miriam

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, with an update on upcoming online events from Miriam, our senior awards and events producer; and our around the industry section.

As our industry continues to grapple with the huge impact of Covid-19, a number of groups have been developing guidelines on how to manage the risk of the virus, so that productions can work out new ways of working. For further information on these guidelines, please go here

As I mentioned last week, sadly we will be saying goodbye to Miriam, who kindly stayed on beyond April, when she had originally been attending to leave, to help us transition into our new online events. With social distancing still in place the team will be giving her a send off via a Zoom farewell party, until we can meet up face-to face!

Our new Senior Awards and Events Producer will be Rebecca Towers, who joins us on Monday 15 June. Rebecca has over twenty years’ experience working in live events and TV production. So we are all really looking forward to working with her.

Finally, great to see that our Meet the Commission event with Mandy Chang featured in Broadcast last week here

Have a good week and stay safe.

Many thanks and stay safe.

Best
Liz

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, with an update on upcoming online events from Rebecca, our senior awards and events producer and our around the industry section.

First of all, I’d like to say a huge welcome to Rebecca who joins us today, as our new senior awards and events producer, we are all very much looking forward to working with her. Rebecca comes with over 20 years’ TV experience and has been recently running events at the RSA, so will be a very valuable addition to the team.

To continue our campaign for those freelancers and self-employed workers who continue to fall through the gaps of the government scheme, WFTV would like to start a daily social media campaign. Every day, we would like to feature a different story of a freelancer or self-employed worker who has not been able to claim via either of the schemes. So if you would like to take part in this, please can you email me at
l...@wftv.org.uk and explain your story in around  40 words or less, all profiles will be anonymised before we place them on social media.  We hope this campaign will serve as a powerful reminder of the large number of workers who have been left with no support and keep this important issue at the top of the political agenda.

And as ever, if there are other things that you would like us to do that we are not doing, please let us know.

Many thanks and stay safe.

Best
Liz

Hi Everyone,

Before we delve into the raft of events and meet-ups we have planned, I wanted to say how delighted I am to be joining an organisation that is at the forefront of championing women working in the creative industries in the UK.

Throughout my event and TV production work I have strived to highlight female talent and include the voices of women from all walks of life. Now, during this period of great uncertainty and change, I hope to continue to do the same. Women need our support and the recognition of their craft and skills within the film and TV industry - more than ever.

So, it is with great eagerness I take up Miriam’s reigns, and alongside the rest of the events team, build upon the breadth and quality of the offerings they have been producing to date.

This week we will be welcoming the multi-talented TV chef and best-selling author, Rachel Khoo on Wednesday 17 June. An executive producer and podcaster to boot, Rachel will be sharing her career story with WFTV.

On Friday 19 June don’t miss the opportunity to learn how to best navigate the film festival circuit in a virtual world, with the founder of Festival Formula, Katie McCullough. Please send through any questions for Katie in advance to amyl...@wftv.org.uk so that she can incorporate them into her talk and Q&A.

Finally, I am delighted to announce a brand new WFTV strand, Reframing the Narrative: Women from Diverse Backgrounds Who Made It to the Top. Launching the first session of our new series, WFTV mentoring producer, Tracy Forsyth, will interview Ching He Huang. A globally renowned TV chef and writer, Ching now produces both unscripted and scripted content and on Thursday 25 June she will be sharing with us some of her career insights and also her views on diversity within the TV industry. Not to be missed.

Monday 22 June 2020

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, with an update on upcoming online events from Rebecca, our senior awards and events producer and our around the industry section.

Last week, on National Freelancer’s Day we started our WFTV social media campaign. Each day, we are highlighting the story of a freelancer or self-employed worker who has been unable to claim under either of the government’s schemes. Reading the individual stories is deeply upsetting and really makes clear the financial hardship and distress so many freelancers are facing. The campaign is picking up a lot of response on Twitter and Instagram and is being covered widely in the industry press:

As part of WFTV events programme, I am very much looking forward to chatting to Louisa Compton, Head of Current Affairs & News at Channel 4 in our Meet the Commissioner session on 30 June and getting those all important insights about how to win a commission. If you would like to attend, please sign up here.

And as ever, if there are other things that you would like us to do that we are not doing, please let us know.

Many thanks and stay safe.

Best
Liz

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, with an update on upcoming online events from Rebecca, our senior awards and events producer and our around the industry section.

Our campaign for forgotten freelancers continues to gain attention across all social media platforms. The good news is that due to all the campaigning material that we and other colleagues are putting out, this issue is being reported more and more frequently in the press and broadcast media. And on Thursday last week in a debate in the House of Commons, MPs from across the political spectrum called on the government to provide support for those excluded from the current finance support schemes. The Conservative spokesman summing up at the end of the parliamentary session said that conversations were ongoing about further support, so we continue to lobby for change.

If you would like to take part in our #forgottenfreelancers campaign, please could you email your story to me in around 40 words or so. My email is
l...@wftv.org.uk and all stories will be anonymised.

And as ever, if there are other things that you would like us to do that we are not doing, please let us know.

Many thanks and stay safe.

Best
Liz

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, with an update on upcoming online events from Rebecca, our senior awards and events producer, and our around the industry section.

Our WFTV forgotten freelancers campaign continues and I am so grateful to Liberal Democrat MP Jamie Stone who has set up an all-party parliamentary group (APPG) to help people who have been excluded from government support. The group meets for the first time tomorrow. Remarkably, at the time of writing there are already 126 MPs signed up to the group, which is a huge number. Many APPGs only have a handful of MPs.

However, if we can, we’d like even more MPs in the group because the more politicians we have, the greater our lobbying power.
On our website, you can see the current list of MPs in the APPG, so if your MP hasn’t yet joined, it would be great if you could contact them and ask them to sign up to the group, and please copy Jamie.s...@parliament.uk into your email. Delighted to say my local MP, Ruth Cadbury, has agreed to join the group. (Government ministers, party whips and members of the shadow cabinet aren’t able to join APPGs.)

Our WFTV forgotten freelancers campaign continues, I managed to get further coverage of the issue including in Broadcast and Radio 4’s Today Programme last week. We are working hard to keep the issue current in the media and have also been liaising closely with other groups, such as ExcludedUK.

If you haven’t yet sent your story into our campaign, we would really appreciate receiving it, as it is really important to keep reminding everyone of the huge number of workers who have been left behind. All stories are anonymised and you can email me at
l...@wftv.org.uk

The good news is there are now 214 MPs in the all-party parliamentary group campaigning on this issue. However, if we can, we’d like even more MPs in the group because the more politicians we have, the greater our lobbying power. On our website, you can see the current list of MPs in the APPG, so if your MP hasn’t yet joined, it would be great if you could contact them and ask them to sign up to the group, and please copy
Jamie.s...@parliament.uk into your email.

Today, we also open nominations for this year’s awards. It costs nothing to enter and is a fantastic chance to celebrate talented women in the industry. We will be running our juries as normal in the autumn this year, and will shortly be making a decision about whether we run our awards ceremony in December or postpone it to Spring 2021.

We have decided because our awards is always such a great party, we don’t want to run an online awards, but will wait until we can run a ceremony you can all attend, as I think we are all due a good party!

Many thanks and stay safe.

Best
Liz
