Improving Your Photography Skills for Location Scouting

Course Profile

This workshop is led by award winning architect and photographer Aisling McCoy and is designed to give you the technical knowledge and practical skills to make better pictures of locations.

During the course of the workshop you will get a technical understanding of how your camera works in manual and semi-auto mode, an overview of equipment available, and ways of both evaluating your work and finding solutions to common problems encountered when documenting locations.

The course is workshop based so you will get the chance to put theory to practice and evaluate the results in different locations and conditions over the day – dense urban space, parkland landscape and low light conditions.

Schedule

Brief history of photography of place; architectural and landscape photography

Introduction to camera equipment and mechanical concepts

Workshop 1: Urban architectural photography in Temple Bar, int/ext – shoot and review

Introduction to composition; pre-shoot planning; assessing light; approaches to common problems.

Next steps: advice on buying a camera; upgrading equipment; approaches to post-processing

Workshop 2: Landscape shoot and review

Participant Profile

This course is aimed at experienced Location Manager and Location Assistants that want to improve their photography skills when scouting for locations. This course is not open to Location Trainees. A course for Location Trainees will run at the end of March.
