Welcome From the Chair

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s edition of our newsletter, with Miriam, our Senior Awards and Event Producer’s weekly update on WFTV events and our round-up of news and events across the industry.

There are now just over two weeks before the WFTV Pat Llewellyn Bursary closes, so last week I hosted an event with tips on what to include in your application and it was great to also meet and chat with a number of members I hadn’t met before. The bursary offers development funding for factual based or factual entertainment TV proposals. Each bursary is worth £10,000. It’s open to all women, regardless of your level of experience. That’s because we want this award to be truly inclusive and diverse, so even if you have never made a programme before you can enter, so it’s very definitely worth applying!

Finally in the WFTV office we are all looking forward to attending the networking events tomorrow.  Miriam and Scarlet will be heading up to Cardiff to attend our Welsh networking session, while Lisa, AmyLouise and I will be going to the London networking at Acuity Legal sponsored by Franklin Rae.

Have a great week.

Best,
Liz

Upcoming WFTV Events...

Just Announced: Intimacy Workshop with Ita O'Brien

Tuesday 24 September, 18:30, Central London

We’re delighted to welcome Intimacy Coordinator, Movement Director and 2018 WFTV mentee, Ita O’Brien to lead a session on intimacy for WFTV actor and director members. Ita has developed and established best practice when working with intimacy, sexual content, and nudity for theatre and film, culminating in the Intimacy on Set Guidelines published in 2018.

Ita’s recent work includes Gentleman Jack and Sex Education, and her guidelines have been adopted by leading studios and productions, including HBO, Netflix, BBC, ITV4, Amazon, Sky and many others. During this session, Ita will use film clips to elaborate on the guidelines when working with intimacy and scenes with sexual content for actors, directors, and movement directors and also share some tips to be aware of from the auditioning process, rehearsals, through to performance or filming.

Then why not come along to our finance breakfast with Kevin Broadbent of  Smith & Williamson who will help  demystify the world of pensions and advise you on how best to navigate through the complexities of planning for retirement.

WFTV Events Round-Up

Well, the Awards nominations window closed on Friday and we are now busy sorting through them all. We’re feeling very inspired by some of the wonderful suggestions that have been put forward and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate. It’s set to be another fantastic WFTV Awards ceremony in December. Tickets will go on sale in October so watch this space for details coming soon.

We’ve got a busy week ahead of us for events: double networking tomorrow - in London and Cardiff, Tips & Tricks in London on Wednesday and our Northern Ireland Masterclass with Channel 4 commissioner Nicola Brown on Friday.

I read an article last week that said September was the most productive month because we’re all programmed in post-summer, back to school mode; it definitely feels that way! I hope you’re all having enjoyable, productive months too, and look forward to seeing you soon.

Best,
Miriam

WFTV Mentoring Scheme Update

Tomorrow marks the end of the WFTV Mentoring Scheme for 2019 and what a brilliant time we have had. Over the course of six months, 20 mentees have each been paired with an industry mentor for six one hour sessions; many attended the Cannes Film Festival, Sheffield Doc Fest and the Edinburgh TV Festival and honed their networking skills; they’ve worked through a CV masterclass and honed their personal elevator pitches; they've taken turns to deliver a one hour talk about their expertise to each other and in so doing the other mentees have learned a huge amount.

They’ve bonded as a group of women with skills in varying areas of the industry and enjoyed peer-to-peer mentoring, both of which I know will carry on long after the scheme is over. Most important of all, they’ve all gained critically important skills and valuable new knowledge to help them build and develop their careers for the future and I can’t wait to see what they do next.  And, of course, while it’s farewell to the mentees of 2019, they will always be part of the WFTV mentee family!

Best,
Tracy
