The VAN Podcast | Episode 2: NINE Artist Collective and The Angelica Network

The VAN Podcast is a podcast series from Visual Artists Ireland.

Published every two months, The VAN Podcast comprises online conversations, recorded remotely, with various contributors to each issue of The Visual Artists’ News Sheet. This gives opportunities to discuss some of the ideas arising from published texts, while also offering insights into wider practice.

Episode 2 features interviews with Kiera O’Toole, as well as Jane Morrow and Moran Been-noon, who each contributed to the January-February 2021 issue of VAN.

Kiera O’Toole is a Sligo-based artist, a PhD candidate at Loughborough University, and cofounder of Drawing deCentred – an artist-led collective that explores contemporary drawing practice in Ireland. Her recent profile for VAN focuses on NINE – a new collective of 8 women artists, formed during lockdown.

Jane Morrow is an independent visual art curator and researcher based in Belfast, whose ongoing PhD research examines the precarity of artists’ studios and workspaces. Moran Been-noon is an Israeli, Dublin-based curator, artist and writer, who is currently Curator-in-Residence at glór in Ennis. In 2020, Jane and Moran established the Angelica Network, which was profiled in the January-February issue of VAN.

These podcast interviews are also available on Soundcloud, the Visual Artists News Sheet Online and in the Members Area of the VAI website.

About VAN:

The Visual Artists’ News Sheet (VAN) is the primary all-Ireland information resource for visual artists presenting case study articles on all aspects of the lives of professional artists, alongside features offering critical reflection and analysis of relevant aspects of the art world in Ireland and internationally. The Visual Artists’ News Sheet reports and reflects upon the broadest possible range of issues relevant to Irish visual artists across Ireland. The Visual Artists’ News Sheet is also committed to giving coverage to the diversity of contemporary Irish visual arts practice in terms of media, generation and geography. The Visual Artists’ News Sheet’s inclusive remit encompasses artists working in traditional and contemporary modes; established and emerging artists; artists who are based throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. visualartistsireland.com

Sara Greavu announced as new Curator of Visual Arts at Project Arts Centre

Project Arts Centre is delighted to announce that Sara Greavu will join the team as Curator of Visual Arts from April 2021.

Following the hugely successful programme of Curator Lívia Páldi, which not only made an active reach into Project’s rich history, but brought unique international visions to Dublin, Project are delighted to welcome Sara to the team.

Welcoming her appointment, Artistic Director Cian O’Brien said:

Sara has a unique ability to combine deep collaborations with artists and public programming. I am so excited for her to build on the legacy of our previous curators and share her vision for the Visual Arts at Project with our audiences and artists.”

For Project, 2021 will be a year of nimble flexibility with a programme of enquiry, discussion, experimentation, presentation and debate. The learning that emerges from this process in 2021 will shape the future of the organisation for the following five years and Sara will play a key role in shaping this vision, alongside the whole team.

Commenting on her appointment Sara Greavu said:

“I have great admiration for Project and its programme history, and taking up the post of Curator of Visual Arts at this unprecedented time is both challenging and exciting. It will be a privilege to collaborate with the Project team to develop a new programme that will create public space for people to think, discuss and work together. I’m especially looking forward to working closely with artists and others to explore points of connection and alignment within the wider economic, social, and intellectual cultures that shape our current moment.’

Sara will take up the post in April 2021.

About Sara:
Sara Greavu is a curator, writer and organiser. She has a particular interest in how art can recognise existing social structures, propose alternative histories and genealogies, and prefigure different social relations. Previous curatorial and development roles include Centre for Contemporary Art Derry~Londonderry, VOID, and Outburst Arts, Belfast; in addition to working independently. Institutional and independent projects have included artists such as Renate Lorenz & Pauline Boudry and Phil Collins, and new commissions by Aideen Doran, Santiago Sierra, and Eimear Walshe, among others. In CCA she initiated the two-year residency programme, Our Neighbourhood, which engaged with local communities of place and communities of interest, alongside artists Sarah Pierce and Sarah Browne. In 2019, in partnership with artist Andrea Francke, she developed Knowledge is Made Here, an alternative pedagogical practice, produced with queer, trans and non-binary young people. It’s not for you we did it, a research project with artist Ciara Phillips, deals with intertwined political and cultural initiatives in Derry in the 1980s and is part of the 39th EVA International 2020-21.

VAI Online | Peer Critique (Co. Louth based artists only)

What does a peer critique session look like?
Having somebody to talk to; removing the sense of being in it on your own; getting constructive advice and feedback that goes beyond friends telling you “It’s great” helps you to push your work further. VAI Peer Reviews are designed to do just that! To allow you to talk with a wider audience in a friendly atmosphere, have a good conversation about it, and gain advice from leading curators/artists from around the world.

What can I expect?

This two-part peer critique will take place on two Thursdays with four artists presenting in each session. Across the two sessions, eight artists in total will share their work with the rest of the group. Participants would need to be available for both sessions to allow for presentation and critique. This is a platform for artists to receive feedback and the chance to generate a discussion around your work.

Session one: Thursday 4th March, 10am-12pm

Session two: Thursday 11th March, 10am-12pm

This event will be facilitated by Laura McCafferty, Public Programmes Curator at CCA Derry~Londonderry.
