Study with us...

The Seamus Heaney Centre Centre Summer School 2021
The 2021 Poetry Summer School is fast approaching. From Sunday 27th June to Friday 2nd July a small group of students from all over the world will be joining us virtually for an intensive week of writing, collaboration, workshops, and individual tuition. The summer school is led every year by Professor Nick Laird. Although the Summer School is online again, we were so impressed last year at how strong of a community can be built even virtually, and we can't wait to see the same again later this June.

Each year the Summer School participants are celebrated with a showcase of their work - last year we produced a podcast that you can listen to here which features new poetry from our participants. You can read all about last year's Summer School here, including Writer's Room interviews with the participants.

We really want to say at this point how proud we are of our previous Summer School graduates. All year we have an amazing amount of good news coming in from our incredible talented participants that we get to share out with you all, and it is so rewarding for us to see how this Summer School plays a part in their careers moving forward.

So watch this space and we can't wait to share out this year's work and participants...

The Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize Winner 2021!

On Thursday night we had the Award Night for this year's First Collection Poetry Prize, a wonderful evening hosted by and streamed from No Alibi's, so a big thank you to them for having us. We had some beautiful readings from the shortlisted poets, all introduced by our judge Stephen Sexton.

A massive congratulations to the winner of the 2021 Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize - Arrow, by Sumita Chakraborty, published by Carcanet!

Nick Laird, our chair of this year's judging panel said the following on Arrow:
"Arrow by Sumita Chakraborty is a marvelous coll
ection for both the maximalist and minimalist. Here are brief lyrics, prose essays, parables, lengthy lineated epics – and all of them given life with language stretched and pummelled into shape. Dealing in myth, astronomy, autobiography, philosophy, physics and metaphysics, Chakraborty possesses a singular outlook and the tone of a prophet."

You can read more about the winner and shortlist on our website here and also on Carcanet's website here.

The Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize is suported by the Atlantic Philanthropies. Find out more about the Poetry Prize here.

Sheila Llewellyn - Winter in Tabriz
We recently congratulated our PhD graduate Sheila Llewellyn on the publication of her novel Winter in Tabriz - the novel has seen much success since then. It was recently selected by the Times Literary Supplement as one of their Summer Books for 2021. Sheila also recently wrote a blog post for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland about the inspiration for the novel, which is a fascinating read

New Collection by Gerald Dawe
Congratulations to our advisory board member Gerald Dawe on the publication of A City Imagined, the third collection in his Northern Chronicles trilogy. Merrion Press describes A City Imagined as the exploration of Dawe's relationship with Belfast, and the ever-changing nature of the city.

The latest news and events from the Seamus Heaney Centre
June Roundup
The Summer School
We've had such a fantastic week with our summer school students, who have all taken part in daily seminars, workshops and 1-1 tuition sessions with our tutors. A big thank you to everyone who took part, and for all the work that went on behind the scenes from our tutors. We can't wait to showcase our Summer School students' work with readings later this summer!
We'll also be sharing all their news and achievements now that they've joined the Seamus Heaney Centre community! Starting off this week with some news from Ralph Dartford, one of this year's students. He is an editor at Northern Gravy, a literary periodical from the North of England, which has a submissions window opening in August, so watch out for that! We'll share more details closer to the time.
The Friday Critique: Poetry prize Edition
For the next 5 weeks we're running a series of Friday Critiques on the collections shortlisted for the First Collection Poetry Prize. Over the summer we will be celebrating the incredible collections that were shortlisted.

This week Andrew Rahal reviews Cannibal by Safiya Sinclair, published by Picador Books. Read the full review here
The Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize Winner 2021!

A week ago we had the Award Night for this year's First Collection Poetry Prize, a wonderful evening hosted by and streamed from No Alibi's, so a big thank you to them for having us.

Films on QFT Player
We have two new films on the QFT Player page from recent events. First up we have Book Launch: Cheryl's Destinies by Stephen Sexton, Aug 2021. Our first in-person event in almost 18 months, we were joined by a wonderful audience in the Great Hall at Queen's to celebrate the launch of Stephen Sexton's collection Cheryl's Destinies (Penguin, 2021). The second film is In Conversation: Enda Walsh & Aislinn Clarke. This conversation took place back in the spring, but we delayed sharing as we were waiting to coincide with a screening of Enda's and David Bowie's stageplay, Lazarus. This screening has moved to the new year. Stay tuned for that!

Thank you to our MA student Luke Macpherson for taking these fantastic photos from the Seamus Heaney Centre Presents Boo! at the Crescent Arts Centre in October. You can find more of his photos on Instagram at @lukepatrickmacpherson
