We hope that you are keeping safe and that you had a restful break during what would have been a very different festive period for many of us.

As we head into our third national lockdown, our thoughts are with you all during these challenging and uncertain times.

Although the new lockdown measures will mean spending a lot more time inside, we have some fantastic upcoming events to fill your virtual calendar.

Bruce Devlin will lead this RTS Thames Valley session exploring why time synchronisation is so important, the challenges this brings to the industry in the IP environment and how these will be met, not least with new concepts such as traceable time as a service (TTaaS).

It has been a particularly challenging year for young people wishing to enter our industry. We are therefore delighted to announce that there are only two weeks to go until the RTS Futures Virtual Careers Fair, the biggest TV careers event in the UK. Over 75 exhibitors from all over the country will be on hand to share one-on-one advice, career opportunities and job application guidance throughout the two-day event in our virtual booths, including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, IMG Studios, NFTS, RDF Television, Amazon Studios, EndemolShine UK, ScreenSkills and UKTV, as well as six TV and film universities and colleges. Sky has had a very prolific and successful year with a slate of exciting original shows. There's only a few days to go until our first ever virtual RTS Futures Careers Fair and we are thrilled to have over 85 exhibitors hosting virtual booths over the two day event. The likes of Viacom, ITV Studios, Creative Access, Sky, ENVY, Channel 4, Amazon Studios and the BBC will be on hand to give advice, talk to potential candidates about job opportunities, and answer all the burning questions about how to break into the industry. On 2 and 3 February, we hosted our first ever virtual RTS Futures Careers Fair. Over 1500 attendees connected with 90 exhibitors, learnt about entry level opportunities and training programmes they offer, visited the CV clinic and Ask Me Anything booths, and attended useful seminars hosted by industry professionals to help equip them for their first job in television. We are delighted to report that there were over 23,000 visits to our virtual exhibitor booths.  Thank you so much to all our volunteers and exhibitors for making our first virtual careers fair such a success! 

This week, the nation lost a hero, Captain Sir Tom Moore. We were proud to reflect on the extraordinary work he achieved during the pandemic and throughout his incredible life at last year’s RTS East event, which you can watch here.

In a year when everyone relied so heavily on the news, it's great to be able to celebrate the journalists in our field at this year's RTS Television Journalism Awards. This year's ceremony will be live streamed from the RTS website on 24 February, hosted by the brilliant Mishal Husain. At last week's virtual RTS Futures Careers Fair, we had the most watched sessions since the fair's inception with over 3400 attendees joining the online webinars over the two day event. For those who missed it, you can watch the sessions on the RTS website and YouTube channel, including webinars on how to break into local news, working in broadcast media technology, an introduction to access schemes, an NFTS session about the MA course, and a Silent Witness masterclass.

We have started the month with some fantastic regional online events. RTS London explored whether there was too much choice in the new golden age of television at last week's panel event, RTS Republic of Ireland looked at what Ireland is watching on TV and RTS Yorkshire examined the importance of archiving Yorkshire's television heritage in an evening panel event.

Later this month, RTS Futures will host a webinar about how to break into the world of TV casting, and next month Kate Ward, President of Vice Studios, will join Manori Ravindran for an 'in conversation' event. Find out more about our upcoming events here.

This week, we will celebrate the extraordinary journalists in our field at this year's RTS Television Journalism Awards. This year's ceremony will be presented online from the RTS website on Wednesday 24 February from 6pm, hosted by the brilliant Mishal Husain. You can watch the ceremony on Wednesday here.

RTS London will explore how independent producers, production companies and broadcasters can effectively use TikTok to drive new kinds of engagement to their content on Wednesday 24 February, and RTS Thames Valley will look at the impact of disruptive innovation on the gathering and presentation of news on Thursday 25 February.

Next week, Kate Ward, President of VICE Studios, will join Manori Ravindran, International Editor, Variety, in conversation on Thursday 4 March. Kate will discuss VICE Studios' global content strategy, and will reflect on the past year for VICE Studios and ambitions for 2021. Sign up for this exclusive event here.

RTS Futures and Creative Train’s Jade Gordon will share tips on how to develop your interview techniques on Monday 1 March, and a panel event will examine whether the TV industry is making a big enough impact on implementing sustainable practices, how everyone in the industry can make a difference, and what a truly sustainable TV industry should look like and whether we can really get there on Tuesday 2nd March.

Looking ahead to the RTS Programme Awards 2021 next month, you can watch the nominations announcement, presented by broadcaster and actor Ore Oduba, on Tuesday 2nd March from 9:30am here.
