Welcome From the Chair

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week's WFTV newsletter with our weekly update from Miriam, our senior Awards and Events producer, and our round-up of news and events across the industry.

It was great to be at the Belfast Media Festival last week to announce the launch of our Northern Irish mentoring scheme, which is open to all women working and living in Northern Ireland who have more than five years' industry experience. Applications are open for the scheme until 16 December and full information can be found HERE.

While I was at the festival, I also took part in a panel sponsored by our WFTV group in NI - TV Ethics: Duty of Care - Who Cares? Joining me on the panel, which was expertly chaired by Kelda Crawford-McCann, were Alison Millar, Jacky Martens, Lauren Bradford, Beejal Patel, Emma Rosa-Dias and Tracie O'Neill. We discussed the increasing pressure ratings can bring to produce more sensational TV, and what we do and could do further to protect both contributors and staff working on TV productions. Many thanks to all our team in Northern Ireland both for organising this thought-provoking event and for their help in driving forward our Northern Irish mentoring scheme.

On Tuesday, we have our monthly London networking drinks, so many thanks once again to Franklin Rae for sponsoring this, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.

Have a great week.

Best,
Liz

WFTV Events Round-Up

Hello newsletter readers, thank you to everyone reading this section!

We’ve been reviewing our newsletter engagement, and it’s quite overwhelming how many eyes this reaches. It made me wonder if there was any further value we could add to this section? Let me know what you want to hear about! (assuming it won’t be a run down of my weekend activities…which this weekend revolved around a very cold trip to North Wales, and compensatory mince pies and trifle flavoured ‘irish cream’)

As you’ve seen we’ve got a fantastic panel coming up Disability Isn’t A Dirty Word hosted by former WFTV mentee Caroline O’Neill and featuring prominent speakers from across industry; Ruth Madely (Actor), Julie Shaw (commissioner BBC Daytime and Early Peak) and Kate Monaghan (Series Producer and MD, Hey Sonny). This panel will offer a passionate and frank critique of the current state of industry and the representation (or indeed, lack of) disabled talent both on and off-screen. We have opened this opportunity to non-members too, so please do share the event link with colleagues and friends who you think may also benefit.

Who’s reading in South Wales or the Midlands?? We’ve got events in both regions this week. In Cardiff on Wednesday we’ve got a seminar introducuing TV Business Basics for Creatives, it’s the perfect opportunity for anybody who's self-employed or thinking about becoming self-employed to get their questions answered. Speakers will be on hand to answer other queries too, so if there’s something you’d like to ask that isn’t addressed on the event listing, please email Sca...@wftv.org.uk and we can pass the question on. On Thursday, in Birmingham, we’re providing you with some inspiration for overseas adventures! We’ll be hearing from Travel Women Nicola Silk, Gemma Kemp and Jemma Parish about the trials and tribulations faced when filming overseas. It sounds like there are some fantastic stories to be shared, so we hope to see lots of you there.

Best,
Miriam
