New Courses: Sales & Distribution for Filmmakers and Market Ready Day

Screen Skills Ireland is delighted to offer two new courses designed to provide filmmakers with the skills to connect their work with audiences and launch their projects into the world: Sales & Distribution for Filmmakers, and Market Ready Day

Sales and Distribution for Filmmakers

DATE: Friday 6 December 2019
TUTOR: Beatrice Neumann
GUESTS: Julia Short; Orla Clancy (Creative Europe MEDIA); Patrick O’Neill (Wildcard Distribution)
DURATION: 1 day, 9.30am to 6.00pm
VENUE: Dublin TBC
COST: €100

Sales & Distribution is often an afterthought in the filmmaking process, while it should be part of the development process from the very start. The better you know your market and your audience, the earlier you start engaging them, the more likely will you connect with your audience and the market agents, who help you launch your film into the world.

This day will give you an introduction to the world of distribution and some of the local players in this world. You will gain an insight into what it takes to get your film to an audience and how you can and should be part of this process. The Guide to SWOT analysis will furnish you with an effective tool to evaluate the progress of your project in every aspect, including its audience appeal.

Topics:

Area’s covered will include:

  • Introduction to Sales and Distribution – The bigger picture & film landscape: state of sales & distribution; how to get a film to an audience; who are the players, old and new; what’s the crisis everybody talks about?; and a word about DIY distribution.
  • European Experiments in Distribution – Creative Europe is and has invested in a lot of initiatives which explore new distribution models, TIDE is a major part of this programme, they have just launched a new tender and Element Pictures VOD platform VOLTA, member of the now obsolete EUROVOD, is part of these experiments.
  • Distribution Landscape in Ireland – Festivals and distribution in Ireland: What roles do festivals play in the process?; how does distribution work and how has it changed? How do you work with sales, what works, what doesn’t and what works when?
  • Doing the Deal: A Case Study – the case study will include: how to pick the right sales and distribution partners and where to find them; key deal terms (sales & distribution); what’s a good or bad deal; and the pitfalls to look out for.
  • A Guide to SWOT Analysis: A Workshop – In this workshop we will look at projects from a market and audience perspective. After a brief introduction to the principles of SWOT, the group will be split into 2 smaller groups, one facilitated by Julia Short, one by Beatrice Neumann.

This course is designed for producers who have a completed a feature film, or several short films and have a first feature in active development, ideally at 1st draft stage.
