Welcome to the January/February issue of TheatreNI's E-zine which brings you key sector news, jobs and funding opportunities!

Heading into 2019, TheatreNI is pleased to announce our office space will be moving from Cathedral Quarter to the Crescent Arts Centre at the end of March as part of an exciting strategic move for the organisation. Our annual all-Ireland performing arts conference (APAC) will take place in Wexford this year, on the 12th and 13th of June and watch this space for exciting training opportunities, including our Young Critics programme, further Laying the Foundations training and much more!

IETM: TheatreNI member, Caoileann Curry-Thompson shares some of her thoughts from the IETM conference in Munich, in November. Bursaries were supported by Belfast city Council. Click here.  

Divadlo Archa: Two TheatreNI members (Dominic Montague and Fionnuala Kennedy) recieved bursaries (supported by Belfast City Council) to attend the prestigious International Summer School at Divadlo Archa, 'Theatre in Social Context' in August 2018 and they have been featured in the organisation's newsletter. Young Critics NRC: On 5th of December, Rachel from TheatreNI led a workshop in critical review, podcasts and blogging with the performing arts students at Northern Regional College, Newtownabbey. Students received training in critical thinking and review, as well as interactive and practical podcast and blog workshops with immediate feedback. Creating Safer Spaces in the Theatre and Performing Arts Sector: You can access our guidance on Creating Safer Spaces in the Theatre and Performing Arts Sector here.  This document includes details what you can do if you are a victim of harassment or bullying, or if you witness harassment or bullying. You can also access our write up from our Creating Safer Spaces training day, held at the Lyric Theatre in March 2018 which was facilitated by Dr Tanya Dean, University of Ulster; the Equality Commission, Equity and Inspire Workplaces. Tourbook:  You can now sign up as an independent artist, company or venue to use Tourbook, TheatreNI's and Theatre Forum's joint initiative to support performers in dance, theatre, music, comedy and more to connect with promoters and venues across the island of Ireland and Scotland. MEMBER NEWS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Accidental Theatre: The Accidental Theatre will be presenting "A Hitchcockian Evening" - a witty and suspenseful double bill of two popular one-act plays by American screenwriter/playwright Scott Fivelson, "Dial L for Latch-Key" and "Leading the Witness". Directed by Rachel Coffey and Thomas Pollock. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. , January 25th and 26th. For more information, click here.

Bluebell Arts Project: Bluebell Arts Project are having an open evening at Gas Yard centre on Monday 14th January from 5-8pm. The evening will provide an informal opportunity to discover what the Bluebell Arts Project can offer organisations, artists, facilitators and members of the local community. So go along and explore the facility (The Arts Factory)  and discuss potential ways in which you may be able to engage with this space, for future benefit.

Primecut Productions: Prime Cut Productions, one of Ireland’s leading independent theatre companies, has announced REVEAL-ED, a unique three day showcase of new work from ten exciting Northern Irish artists, spanning theatre, dance and film at The MAC, Belfast from 17 until 19 January 2019. SECTOR NEWS AND OPPORTUNITIES

'Making Workplaces Thrive' Event with Inspire: With the start of a new year, there’s no better time to consider your organisation's approach to mental health in the workplace.
Places are filling fast for the free half day event on 6th February with our partners at Inspire Workplaces, exploring how employers can embed a culture of wellbeing and equip managers with skills to support positive mental health. For more information, click here.


Disability and The Arts: Rights and Pathways of Support for Artists: This event on 18th of January aims to gather practitioners, policymakers and researchers to discuss disability within the arts in an informal, conversational setting. Collectively, we will explore:

  • The experiences and developmental needs of artists with disabilities on the Island of Ireland
  • The needs of arts programmers in supporting those artists 

  • The challenges to career sustainability for artists

Arts Council NI 5-year Strategic Framework: Arts Council of Northern Ireland are now at stage 3 in the consultation process of developing their 5-year Strategic Framework for Developing the Arts 2019-2024. Their new draft strategic framework document officially opens for public consultation in January 2019.
Phase 3 – Communicating and Consulting (December to March)
•    Online consultation survey – opens early January 2019
•    Consultation workshops – to be announced early January 2019

Arts Council ACES Awards: 17 artists from Northern Ireland have been announced as the latest recipients of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s ACES awards 2018-19, a National Lottery supported funding grant bestowed upon Northern Ireland’s talented emerging artists to allow them to develop their professional, artistic careers through the creation of new work. Among those awarded were Gary Rowntree (dance) and Caoileann Curry-Thompson and Sarah Lyle (both drama). For more information, click here.

Arts Council Major Individual Awards: Arts Council of Northern Ireland honours four major artists with £15,000 awards. Congratulations to all recipients, especially TheatreNI members Rosemary Jenkinson and Carol Moore. To read more, click here.

Arts and Culture Placemaking Research UK: Arts Council England commissioned Catherine Bunting and Tom Fleming to conduct research into arts and culture’s contribution to placemaking in Greater Manchester, Cornwall, Nottingham, Norwich, Hull and Barking and Dagenham. The report explores:

  • The economic impact arts and culture has in places, supporting regeneration, jobs and businesses. 
  • The social impact arts and culture has in places, engaging local communities, and making places for them to live, work and play.
  • How Arts Council is working with local councils and communities to back places with ambition across the country.
