Interview with Seán Gallagher

Murder One 2019


A gripping cast of crime and thriller writers have been lined up for Murder One 2019, taking place in Smock Alley Theatre 1-3rd November. Supported by Dublin Libraries and Dublin City of Literature, Murder One boasts an intriguing blend of crime fact and fiction. 

Martina Cole, Steve Cavanagh, Lucy Foley, Hallie Rubenhold, Joseph O’Connor and Liz Nugent are among the host of Irish and international writers who will be in Dublin for the landmark festival.

True crime is strong this year with events focusing on Jack the Ripper plus Dr Richard Shepherd, UK State Pathologist in discussion with bestseller Paul Carson.

World authority on Agatha Christie, Dr John Curran and author Andrew Wilson will delve into her mysterious disappearance and role as the godmother of detection.

John Banville, Jane Casey and Roz Watkins will be Watching the Detectives with Trinity’s Brian Cliff.

Literary Pub Quiz

An Interview with Nicole Flattery



We had the chance to sit down with author Nicole Flattery and discuss terrible jobs, the allure of social media, and her new book Show Them a Good Time, a collection of hilariously dark, and beautifully entertaining short stories. Meet the Artists



The talented Art, Design and Three-Dimensional (ADT) students of Ballyfermot College of Further Education will be bringing a whole new dimension to Dublin Book Festival with their book art sculptures. ADT is a long established one year portfolio course that prepares students for entry into a level 8 course in art and design. Students on this course have been showcasing their incredible creations at Dublin Book Festival for the past four years, and we're always blown away by their talent. You'll be able to see their works of art on display throughout the festival, and the artists themselves will be at the Winter Garden on Sunday, November 17, at 12pm, discussing the pieces they have created.

Interview with Dave Rudden and Rick O'Shea

Irish Writers Centre/ Dublin Book Festival Young Writers Delegates

Now in its second year, the IWC Young Writer Delegates Programme is intended to give young writers an opportunity to immerse themselves in a literature festival, soak up the atmosphere and to contribute to it as active participants. The selected four young writers will be given festival passes and four days of full literary immersion in its events and activities.

We proudly present this year’s delegates, Darragh Ambrose, Eva Griffin, Kevin O’hÉanna and Andrew Maguire!

We have so many exciting events for established and emerging writers this year! From panels to workshops, find out more below!
 
Setting the Scene in Association with Arts Council Northern Ireland
with Jan Carson, Henry McDonald and Glenn Patterson

 

This recently added event will be a discussion between Belfast Stories authors Jan Carson and Glenn Patterson along with Henry McDonald on the importance of place and setting in stories. This event is perfect for emerging and established writers seeking tips and advice on mastering the skills of developing a sense of place in their writing. Jan Carson has won the Harper's Bizarre short story competition - The Fire Starters is her second book. Glenn Patterson will publish his new novel, Where Are We Now? in 2020 and is the Director of the Seamus Heaney Centre in Queens University, Belfast. Henry McDonald is a staff writer for The Guardian and The Observer. His most recently published book is his second venture into the world of fiction, Two Souls. Book your tickets here!

Join us for the official opening of the Dublin Book Festival 2019, for a very special evening of conversation and performance with Pat McCabe based on his latest book The Big Yaroo (New Island). Francie Brady is back! While incarcerated in Fizzbag Mansions, his obsession with the comic books and fantasy world of his childhood continues, but he has found a new métier – as a publisher of his very own magazine, The Big Yaroo. In Conversation with Rick O'Shea



RTÉ’s news anchor Caitríona Perry is back with her latest take on the Irish in America today. In Conversation with Lynn Ruane



 Richie Sadlier will discuss his gripping new memoir Recovering (Gill Books) about life before, during, and after a professional athletic career. Séan Ó Tuathaigh and Suad Aldarra
In Conversation with Bryan Fanning



 Séan Ó Tuathaigh’s book Outlanders (Mercier Press) features stories of ordinary people from around the world who have fled extraordinary situations: war, ethnic persecution, gang violence. Joining him is Suad Aldarra, a software engineer from Syria who was force to leave her home and start a new life in Ireland. They will be in conversation with Bryan Fanning, Professor of Migration and Social Policy at UCD and author of Migration and the Making of Ireland (UCD Press). Find out more here!

Myths and stories: the building of the North Bull Wall
With Michael Branagan 



In advance of the much anticipated publication of Dublin Moving East: How the City Took Over the Sea (Wordwell Books), author Michael Branagan will provide an illustrated taster of his extensive research of Dublin City into the bay. In the thousand years of Dublin history, 1708–1844 was a key period of expansion when the city more than doubled in size. Michael will talk about his research aided by some of the great illustrations he has collected over the years, many of them previously unseen. Book your tickets here.
Dark Enchantment
