Welcome From the Chair

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s edition of our newsletter, which includes an interview with one of our former mentees explaining how our scheme changed her career;  Miriam, our Senior Awards and Event Producer’s weekly update on WFTV events; and our round-up of news and events across the industry.

We always get lots of queries about funding for films and we are always on the look out for funding opportunities for our members. So last week, I chaired an event with Christian Parton, the founder and CEO of  Genera, which operates a funding scheme for short films. It was a packed event which included clips of films that Genera has helped fund and I am delighted to say that following it, Genera have now offered all WFTV members a 20% discount code.

It was great to talk to members last week during my Call the Chair session, it’s always really valuable to find out more about what you think about what we are doing and what you would like us to do. And I look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible at this week’s networking on Tuesday.

Finally, I am delighted to say that as we continue to increase the scope and variety of the events we run, both in London and throughout the country, we have hired an extra awards and events producer, Scarlet Brearley. Scarlet starts today, so we are all really looking forward to working with her.

Have a great week.

Best,
Liz

Events Round-Up

Another superb week of events last week thanks to our wonderful supporters.

As Liz mentioned, on Tuesday, Christian Parton from Genera Films gave us some insight into funding options for short films.

Then on Thursday we had another brilliant instalment of our Tips & Tricks strand, this time focussing on camera and sound. This was the second WFTV event where we had British Sign Language interpreters and we really hope we will be able to provide these on a regular basis for more of our events to ensure we are truly inclusive.

L-R: Tips & Tricks Series Host Liz McIntyre with Tania Freimuth, Babita Bahal and Anna Bertmark

During the evening, Tania Freimuth (Cinematographer) and Anna Bertmark (Sound Designer and Editor) inspired us all to start working on our craft skills, and Babita Bahal (BBC Content Lead for Diversity & Inclusion) provided some incredibly valuable insight into schemes provided by the BBC, options for training for under-represented groups, and some really practical tips on getting those applications in and how to get ahead. So many thanks to Arri for providing a lovely venue and delicious refreshments and drinks for the event.

We’ve got our monthly networking event tomorrow and there are still a few spots available, so if you haven’t signed up yet there’s still a chance!

See you all soon,
Miriam
