Sundance Success for Women + the 4% Challenge

Joanna Hogg's latest film, The Souvenir won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Competition at the Sundance Awards on Sunday, and 56.5% of the winning films were directed by one or more women and 34.8% by one or more people of colour. The #4percentchallenge, calling on decision-makers to commit to working with female filmmakers, was also launched during the festival.

 

BECTU Survey Finds 50% of Women in Creative Sector Have Experienced Bullying or Harassment

In response, the Bectu Dignity at Work campaign plans to work with industry bodies and large employers to address a range of issues around respect at work, bullying, diversity and discrimination.

 

Money Available For Film & TV Training

Industry professionals can apply for bursaries of up to £1,000  to participate in ScreenSkills' Skills Passport courses. New production courses have recently been added to the directory, including training in areas such as production management and using Final Draft.

 

Berlinale to Sign Up to 5050x2020 Gender Pledge

The Berlin Film Festival has announced that it will sign up to to the 5050x2020 Gender Parity Pledge. Festival chief Dieter Kosslick will sign the pledge this Saturday at a gathering sponsored by our sister chapter, Women in Film and Television Germany.

 

New Development Lab + £10k Prize Up For Grabs For Doc Filmmakers

Zan, meaning ‘women’ in Arabic, is the first TV station in Afghanistan to be made for and run entirely by women. The channel employs 50 women to create its daily mix of news, politics and lifestyle shows. In a country still recovering from Taliban rule, Zan’s team are transforming attitudes – and the ratings are soaring. Now, experienced UK documentary director, Deborah Lovett is calling on fellow TV professionals to support these pioneering women by taking part in one-off Skype sessions - to provide invaluable career insights in the form of a masterclass and Q&A.

The new film from 2013 WFTV Award winner Anna Hall, Behind Closed Doors: Through The Eyes of the Child will be broadcast on BBC2 this Wednesday at 9:00pm. It is a follow on piece from her 2016 film Behind Closed Doors, which attracted a live audience of 3.1 million to BBC1, and looks at domestic abuse through the eyes of the children who have witnessed it.

 

Managing Director of Digital Orchard, Sam Margaritis has written an article for IBC reflecting on the absence of women amongst the nominees in this year’s Oscar’s technical and craft categories, unpicking the possible reasons and suggesting ways to address the issue.

2018 WFTV Mentee Nicola Quilter’s new screenplay, Disc has been selected for JETS taking place in Berlin during the European Film Market. The project is also currently a quarter finalist in the American WeScreenplay competition and tells the story of a couple and stranger who are confronted by a UFO which changes their lives forever.
