Welcome to this week's IFI newsletter! 
 
It's just over one week to go until the start of the 2019 IFI French Film Festival with over 40 screenings from November 13th to 24th. The festival will include 24 Irish premieres, alongside programmes dedicated to the legacy of legendary filmmakers Alice Guy-Blaché and Claude Sautet. We will also welcome special guests Vincent Macaigne, star of Happy Birthday and Pure as Snow, and director Cédric Klapisch. It's an unmissable cultural event, and tickets are already selling fast across the festival, so book now if you can. Multi-film passes are available exclusively at the IFI Box Office: get 5 films for €50 and 10 films for €90. Á bientôt!

This week, we host a 25th anniversary screening of Hoop Dreams (Wed at 19.30), welcome experimental filmmaker Moira Tierney for a Q&A screening of her new film Down Claiborne (Thurs at 18.30), and screen new documentary Where Does the Body End? about legendary soundsmiths Swans (Mon at 18.30). Our new releases on Friday are Martin Scorsese's The Irishman and Meeting Gorbachev directed by Werner Herzog and André Singer.

HOOP DREAMS 25TH ANNIVERSARY NOV 6 (19.30)
Steve James’s groundbreaking documentary, often cited as one of the best ever made, is a quarter of a century old and we're celebrating with a special screening of its newly-restored version. Screening Wednesday 6th at 19.30, you can buy your tickets here
DOWN CLAIBORNE + Q&A NOV 7 (18.30)
Irish film artist Moira Tierney investigates the historical and political underpinnings of the artistic traditions of Mardi Gras Indians in Tremé, New Orleans in this new documentary. The screening will be followed by a director Q&A, hosted by Dr Paula Gilligan of IADT.
JOKER 70MM FINAL SHOWS 
After an incredible run, the final screenings of Joker take place this week. See the year's most incredible performance from Joaquin Phoenix (sure to feature at the 2020 Oscars) exclusively in 70mm at the IFI. Last show Thursday 7th at 18.20. 
IFI FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL 2019 NOV 13-24 
Ireland's biggest French cultural event kicks off in style on Wednesday, November 13th with Céline Sciamma's award-winning Portrait of a Lady on Firewith plenty of treats in store before closing film On a Magical Night on the evening of Sunday, November 24th. 
OPENING ON FRIDAY 
Film legends Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino unite for the first time with the universally acclaimed mob epic The Irishman, while Werner Herzog finds a worthy opponent in the fascinating and intimate documentary Meeting Gorbachev
