I can edit code in the editor but I cannot run it!

In my previous version, 2.1.0 I think it was, upon startup I had a
Python console and an IPython console start up. If I ran code I could
choose to interact with the console/interpreter afterwards. I can no
longer do this. I can't even get the IPython or Python console to
initialise -- they are blank. No prompt, no messages, just blank.

I have checked the config, and it is as it should be as far as I can tell.
Here are the run settings for the IPython interpreter:
-pylab -q4thread -colors LightBG -xmode Plain -editor gedit

Scripts don't run, there is no history saved, F5 does nothing, strangely
F9 prints the lines of code to the interpreter window, and saves to
history log, but does nothing else.

Ubuntu 10.04, Python 2.6. I upgraded using pip:
# pip install spyder --upgrade
Ben.

I have some more info (but not much):

harb@joan:~$ spyder --debug

End of MainWindow constructor

Loading editor...
Loading file explorer...
Loading history plugin...
Loading online help...

*** End of MainWindow setup ***

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but same situation.

I have now tried version 2.1.8 as well after uninstalling 2.1.9. Same
story - no interpreters, cannot run code, etc. Is this perhaps due to a
missing or conflicting package? If so how would I check?
