Hey, why not have some fun on Sporcle University? :)

Welcome to the (I think) first Sporcle quiz-making competition, right here on Sporcle University. Here's how it'll basically work: Each week, I'll post the theme for the contest (it might be something like "cheese" or "India"). Oh yeah, I forgot to mention - if things go well, I'll try to have a new contest here every week. Okay, let's continue. You guys (that's right, you) will contribute a Sporcle quiz that pertains to the theme in any way and post it on this thread. The first four quizzes to be posted will be our four entries. Once the entries are up, it will be voting time. To vote, just send me an email (over at banjo...@gmail.com) telling me which entry you'd like to vote for. After five votes are sent in, I will post the winning quiz and the theme for the next contest. If there is a tie, I'll decide which quiz wins. Also, please do not vote if your quiz is one of the week's entries.

Wow. I'm not very good at explaining rules. If you have any other questions, just ask and I'll answer.
Ah, yes. I almost forgot. I have no idea what the prize could be if your quiz is the winner. Suggestions are always welcome.

The first week's theme:
Purple

Alright, humans. That's it. Again, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Have fun!

I like this idea a lot. I thought about doing something like this but was going to post a bunch of "titles" and challenge users to make quizzes with that title. But Theme is a much better idea. Some people (including myself) have trouble coming up with ideas for quizzes or anything else without some sort of prompt.
I would suggest setting a deadline instead of limiting the number of quizzes. However many quizzes come in before the deadline would still qualify. If you do it like this, then for what it's worth I'd offer to make whichever quiz is declared the winner each week an editor pick in the Just For Fun section.

Hello everybody! I guess I'll be posting the first entry in the Purple themed contest!

Good luck, and find the word "purple" spelled backwards in 30 seconds!

Here's my entry (it's a bit more intense than skuban's, but hopefully enjoyable!)

It follows a similar vein to my 42 Forty-Twos quiz from last year. It's also inspired a new quiz series idea, as I might make a similar one for other colours.

I wish there was a way to change what it says in the original post. I think we'll do it like this: Two days of entering, two days of voting. That'll make it less annoying to have a great idea when there's already four entries. So, tomorrow will be the last day for entries. Then it'll be time to vote.

BZ - I don't think you should change the rules mid-stream.

Anyone who read your previous post might be working on a game, based on the fact that you've now given them through Thursday to contribute one.... And they might not be monitoring this thread in the interim so as to be aware that the parameters have changed again.

So if they are hard at work on a game for the rest of the day, and they log in to Sporcle U. tomorrow to contribute it, they will be quite disappointed, and their efforts will have gone for naught.

Love the concept of the contest, got my competitive Sporcle juices flowing and neglected some of my responsibilities today to hammer out that Purple quiz. I hope you don't get swamped with vote tallying. Maybe you could set up something like Survey Monkey if it gets too much, plus it will be automated. I've never done it myself but hear it is easy and would save a lot of work. Or just say mine is the best and end it there. I'm just sayin'.

I say that when it comes to voting, it would be best to have two or more rounds. So, if there are 10 quizzes, then after the first round 5 would be eliminated, and then the second round would produce the winner (or 3 rounds, first round and second round both eliminate 3, third round produces winner).

I'm really wondering how the voting is going to go, especially now that there are so many entries. I think that contributors should be allowed to vote, just not for their own quizzes. I don't know how many people are familiar with Sporcle U and the contest, so I worry there may be a small number of votes... like 10. I feel that there may be a lot of people who read U, but don't necessarily post anything; so requiring a vote to be emailed to BZ might reduce the number of voters. I do think Survey Monkey or some survey website would be a more user-friendly way of voting.

Maybe even if this were posted somewhere on the actual Sporcle website... it's very possible then that a very large number of users would see it. This could lead to two good ramifications:

1) A truly comprehensive victor
2) A wider introduction and greater exposure to Sporcle U.

Anyway, this post was just me voicing my concern over the eventual N-count of the poll. I hope this doesn't become an issue.

I think contributors should be allowed to vote, just not for their own quiz.
Also with so many entries, I think it should be everyone votes for their 3 favourite quizzes; 3 points for their fav, 2 for their 2nd fav, and 1 point for the 3rd.

How about, instead of votes, the winner is the quiz with the highest Sporcle rating (min 6 ratings) with a minimum 200 plays (or some similar formula)  Let the Good Sporclers decide, even if they are unaware of the extreme stakes at hand?

It also could potentially add an unsavoury element to the contest, where someone could downvote a competitor to boost their quizzes chances of winning. It think it would be really cool if eventually this was integrated into the main site. Maybe as a monthly competition, with each registered Sporcler having one vote. Maybe a badge would be the reward or a guaranteed publish as the user voted quiz of the month.

If you wanted to do the voting on the site, one option would be to make something like rockgolf did here:

Users could simply click their votes. This way you could also vote for as few or as many as you liked. Once you're done voting you simply click "give up". Of course, the drawback would be that someone could log out and play it 100 times, but if someone voted for the same quiz 100 times from the same ip address the admins could probably figure that out. It is not the most scientifically accurate approach, but no method is foolproof.

The "quiz"/survey could be released under the UnitedEditors account. (Or maybe this is finally a job for SporcleBatman.)

Anyways, just a suggestion.

The problem with a quiz poll is that you can't give an order in which you think the quizzes should be (like VikZ' idea, which I still think is best, there's only the problem of BanjoZebra's mailbox exploding). Maybe it should be an idea like this: http://www.sporcle.com/games/Norwegian_dude/sproclers-favorite-cities . Everybody can give his top three in the comments section, and the first comment (by the one who makes the quiz, I'm looking at you SporcleBatman) can have the URL's of the games.

I don't mind being the person to tally up all the votes. I keep my email pretty well organized and I check it regularly.

I think voting should be kept confidential (prevents a lot of biases such as voting for a quiz because you see a lot of people have voted for it) so I don't think using comments for voting is the best system. The total votes and points should be posted too just for transparency and hey it's always cool to look at the data.
(Or maybe just the top 3 quizzes so people don't bad when they find out they're last or close to last).

I was thinking too about it being a good idea to only make public the top 3 or top 5 vote getters, just on the off chance that someone doesn't get any votes. If banjozebra's email provider has the capability he could create one of those email address where mail sent to it is sorted into a folder in his current inbox. That would be relatively straightforward way of collecting all votes in one place.

Just to throw another idea into the mix. Is there anyway of using the joy factor as the guide to this? I believe that takes many different things into account. Not just the good/bad ratings or the number of plays etc. It seems this would give each quiz a pretty fair shot regardless of its nature and everyone could see where they stood on it each week. I don't know if Sporcle has or can see the joy factor to non-picked quizzes but I'm wondering if they would be able to include it or set it up so the quizzes of people taking part in this could also be put on the already existing or even a separate joy factor list (perhaps limiting it to only one entry per person which they would put forward on this forum). That way it may be neck and neck right down to the final minutes of each week!. The quiz with the highest joy factor on each theme at the end of each week could be published (and I guess there could be more than one sometimes too!).

I agree with just emailing your answer to Banjo/Vikz/whoever feels like counting up the votes. This just seems like the fairest way to do it. Although, maybe we could vote and narrow it down to the top 3 or 5 entries and then re-vote. (Although this might be too much work).

Also, I don't see my name on the list of entries, although I already posted my game on here (One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eaters (IMAGE)).

Here's an entirely different alternative to the debate about "how to vote for one's favorite"....

It is probably too late, and would be unfair, to suggest this at present, for THIS round of quiz-making, which I suppose should be completed as proposed (and as advertised).

I'm wondering, why should these be  "contests" in the first place?

Why not have a weekly, or monthly "Quiz-Making Challenge" instead. Simply challenge us contributors to come up with excellent games based on a variety of fun, creative, or perhaps "difficult" themes.

Then, just let the games roll out, and let people enjoy them, since they are SURE to be awesome (as evidenced by the amazing outpouring of terrific Purplistic games we have now seen).

Then we wouldn't have to be in a quandary (as I certainly am now) about "which three are actually my favorites." I have a lot more than THREE favorites out of this batch!

I'd like to see this great idea of BanjoZebra's result in all of us feeling like we are "winners"... we would STILL be presenting a whole bunch of ingenious games to the users/public, and getting the satisfaction we usually get from doing so.

Curators, editors and the administration can still feel free to select games to highlight (from these Challenges) based on parameters which are already in place.

Those parameters have always included some degree of subjectivity. In contest form we've now added another round of subjective-selection issues, but in this case, 95% of the participants are eliminated from the equation.

Sorry about that, stanford. Just a minor mistake.

So, our options for how to vote are:
- SurveyMonkey
- Some kind of poll quiz on Sporcle
- Making a quiz, and voting in the comments
- Emailing me (or VikZ, possibly) with your vote

I think that last makes the most sense. I guess that's just the original voting method. When it's voting time, just email me with your vote at Banjo...@gmail.com. You may vote if you've entered, just please do not vote for your own quiz.

I like napb's idea. I have something a little different. Maybe Sporcle could publish a game similar to Division 1 Basketball Quiz. It could be a page with links to all of the purple quizzes. In that way, it would only be one quiz, and multiple quizzes at the same time. What does everybody think about this idea?

I prefer a competition... with a winner

Even though I admire Mcomisky's idea (which can be done anyways, competition or no), I also prefer the competition. It makes people think even more creative than usual because there's something to win. That's probably why all these purple quizzes are so briliant. And the good ones that don't win can also get the deserved plays on their own, without the help of this format.

Hey BanjoZebra, do you want to take email votes for this round, and then I'll take the next one and then alternate? It'll be half the work that way and it won't get as tiring.

Also just to set this in stone, which voting system are we using? The ranking system (vote for 3 quizzes, one is worth 3 points, the other is worth 2 points, and the last one 1)?

It's great to hear suggestions from everyone on how to handle this but I think it's time to pick a system and stick with it.

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. By tomorrow, I bet I'll be getting a swarm of voting emails.
I think we should totally use the ranking system.

How to Vote:
As you probably know from before, just email me (banjo...@gmail.com) with your vote. Your email should look something like this:

1. [Quiz 1] (your favorite entry)
2. [Quiz 2] (second favorite entry)
3. [Quiz 3] (third)

1st place is worth 3 points, 2nd is worth 2, and 3rd is 1. Please only say your top three, I don't want this to get out of hand.
Voting will start at midnight EST tonight, and will be over in two days. I will then tally up the votes and post our winner here. The winning quiz will (if all goes well) get published on Sporcle.

This has been a fun idea. It doesn't matter to me which quiz gets published. But I think that once it does, Sporcle should put a list of or a link to the other contributed entries, just so interested folks can easily take a look at the amazing array of diverse quizzes. What a great way to inspire others to try making quizzes. Win-win.

Oh, and don't forget to tell me your Sporcle username when you're voting (so I know you're not voting for your own quiz).
