in 1852. He shows up in the 1850 US Census in Lee Township,
Platte County, as Andrew CRESSON. Anyone have any information on him or
any other CREASONs? Thanks!

So, Tom, in answer to your question -- Yes, CARL can do that.
And CARL can do it in many other states and library systems
besides California's College libraries.

But we haven't talked about JANET yet, or Yale University's
Gopher, which offers *CARL* as simply one of many.

Two things... California was a good place to look for a California book,
so the LA Public Library was a good choice for the one you were looking
for.

Melvy covers 6 million entries in a single file, which are ALL of the
libraries of ALL of the campuses of the University of California

>California's College libraries

is certainly a put down

Importantly, Sutro, the genealogical library is included, as well
as numerous other special collections.

I have used Carl to look in the Denver Public Library, which has a
fine genealogical collection, but I have to constatnly stumble over all
of the formatting that is interposed between the entries and the
user and all of the commands needed to navigate through these screens

Every good library collection has its own unique properties. I was
delighted with FirstSearch, when that was available on a demo basis.

It is the most powerful yet!

Exactly. You generally want to look as close to the location of
the family for whom you're searching as you can, I would say. I might
also add that even with 6,000,000 books, the UC system does not have
every single book there is.

>Melvy covers 6 million entries in a single file, which are ALL of the

Right. Which is exactly one state of 50. But, I don't really mean to
knock MELVYL -- I like it very much. I like its interface, and it has
some books in my surname alone that the LA Central Library
didn't have.

>I have used Carl to look in the Denver Public Library, which has a

It really takes about as long to master as MELVYL does, Tom. If you
ask me, MELVYL is a comprehensive place to look first -- and one can
then use CARL to find whether the books may be available at public
libraries more local to you.

But, I think you should use everything you can find to get any materials
available that pertain to your search. CARL's a good umbrella system,
and offers a nice consistent interface between a great many libraries.
But if you want to use ACLIN, or JANET, or telnet to Uppsala, Sweden
(which I did one night...they graciously offer you a choice to switch
from Swedish to English for your menus...) then you gotta be quick
to get the hang of the things. So, it may not be the best idea in
the world to rely on just one library system -- you never know where
you're gonna find that comprehensive book on your family that some
unknown cousin wrote and donated quietly.

And I do know how easy it was to collect the CARL listings, print
'em, and hand 'em to the librarian for retrieval from the closed
stacks the next morning. That was a real joy.
