Looking for information on family of Elick (may be Alex) Hancock born
in South Carolina and married Sarah Jane(?) also born in South
Carolina. They had 7 children: Billy, Drusilla, John (born in Alabama
- wife Matilda), Matilda, Steve, Young, and Henry Hardy (my father's
ancestor). Henry Hardy was born 27 Oct 1818 in Tennessee. He married
Mary Jan Hayes. They are buried in the Hancock family cemetery near
Gary, Texas.
Henry Hardy and his sister Drusilla moved to Texas in time for them to
be on the 1850 census. Mary Jan Hayes was born 04 Jan 1826 in Alabama
He father is reported to have been a very popular doctor who was
related somehow to the Rather family of which the reporter Dan Rather
is descended. Never have proven that, though.
Henry Hardy and Mary Jan had 7 children: Charley, Henry Hardy, James
Alexander, William Hardy, George Washington (my husband's ancestor),
Philip Young, and Mary Jane.
G. W. Hancock married Frances Emma Tindol. They had 11 children:
Almeadia, Unnamed Baby, Dan Jackson, Emmet, Emry, Minnie Avon, Ravona,
Carlos, Hollis, Omer Jackson (my FIL), and Ara (stillborn).
Omer Jackson Hancock married Ila Belle Witherspoon. Omer was born 19
Feb 1912 in Shelby Co., Texas. He and Ila Belle had 5 children: James
Wayne(b. 20 Jul 1937), Sandra Ruth (b 28 Jul 1940), Terry Paul (my
husband - b. 17 Aug 1946), Huey Dan (b. 10 Apr 1952), and Russell Dean
(b. 03 Feb 1956).
If anyone has any info on this family especially before Elick Hancock
I would appreciate hearing from you. It is hard finding out anything
from family members because stories have become garbled and changed
over the years. It is hard to tell what is truth and what is
invention. Please write to me.
