Hello All,

In the unending search for that Holy Grail (or dingy dispenser as
the case may be), the origins of the Despensers, I have reviewed and
reconstructed what I had previously proposed about a year ago. The
following is clearly reasonable as to chronology (an improvement as
Chris Phillips and Rosie Bevan will note), and is reasonable based
on what we know (at present) concerning the lands at Burton on the
Wolds, co. Leics. In addition, the onomastic evidence (especially
the repetition of the names Hugh, Thomas and Elias) and the subsequent
relationships between Elias de Prestwold and Stephen de Segrave (a
Despenser in-law), and between Stephen de Segrave and the grandchildren
of Ivo de Alspath, is also compelling. The absence of a confirmatory
document, esp. as to Thomas 'dispensator' [d. 1207, 1.1.1.1.2. in the
chart below] and his relationship to individuals in this chart prior
to his brother Elias, is also obvious.

Those connections that are conjectured/unproven as of this date
are given as broken lines ( _ _ _ _ ). For the sake of providing
all sources I currently have in hand, at the end of this post is
a detailed pedigree crossreferenced to the chart below. References
cited in the chart are the same as given at the end of the pedigree.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no significant sources
(e.g. CCR, Dugdale, CP) unturned. If so, we may not be able to
advance further than this point. However, should anyone have a
source to hand, or suggestion as to other fonts for fossicking,
please advise.

Cheers, and a happy and healthy New Year to all!

John *

possibly William:

of Queniborough and Burton on the Wolds, co. Leics.

'Willelmus', identified by K.S.B. Keats-Rohan as holding
lands in Stache and Queniborough, Leics. of Geoffrey de la
Guerche at Domesday Book, in 1086 (DD, p. 652, as
cited by Cris Nash and Chris Phillips. The source cited
is Red Book of the Exchequer, ed. Hall (1897), pp. 418-21)[1],[2]

1.1 NN de Queniborough
----------------------------------------

sister of Thurstan de Queniborough

evidently had lands in Burton on the Wolds and Prestwold, co. Leics.
as her maritagium:

re: her husband, Hugh de Berges (also, de Prestwold):

of Prestwold and Burton on the Wolds, co. Leics.

possibly originally came from Berges, Sussex

he may have been the son (or other successor) of Hugh, who held
2 carucates of land less 1 bovate in Bortone [Burton on the
Wolds] of earl Hugh in 1086.[4]

' Hugo de Berges', made a gift of 3 carucates to Garendon abbey in
Burton on the Wolds, confirmed by son Ansketil, together with his
(Ansketil's) uncles Thurstan de Queniborough and Radulf[5]

Gift in Prestwold confirmed by Ansketil (Farrer HKF II: 77, citing
Cal. Chart. R. iv. 475)[6]

'Hugh de Prestwold':
his son Ansketil identified himself as 'Anketinus filius Hugonis
de Prestald' in his gift of the church of St. Andrew of Prestwald
to Bullington priory - Stenton, Transcripts p. 93[7]

Spouse: Hugh de Berges

Children: Ansketil

1.1.1.1 Hugh de Berges
----------------------------------------

of Burton on the Wolds, co. Leics.

theorised to have been the father of Thomas 'dispensator' as well as
of Ansketil de Prestwold (elsewhere Ansketil le Louerd):
cf. records in CCR and subsequent:
'the grant of the same Asketil of the gift of Thomas Dispensator
of ten bovates of land in his fee, in the same town' of Burton on
the Wolds, co. Leics. to Garendon abbey [CCR IV:475[8]]

'Hugh de Prestwold':
his son Ansketil identified himself as 'Anketinus filius Hugonis de
Prestald' in his gift of the church of St. Andrew of Prestwald to
Bullington priory - [Stenton, Transcripts p. 93[7]]

as ' Hugh de Prestwold', he made further gifts of land in
Prestwold, co. Leics. to Garendon abbey: CCR records
' the grant of Asketill son of Hugh de Prestwold of the gift of Hugh
his father, de Prestwold, of twenty acres of land in Prestwald with
common pasture, quit of all service to the said Asketill and his
heirs; the gift of the said Asketill of eight acres of land in the
said town' - CCR IV:475[8]

Children: Ansketil
Thomas (-ca1207)
Elias

1.1.1.1.1 Ansketil de Berges
----------------------------------------

of Burton on the Wolds, co. Leics.

' Asketil de Berges', gave to Garendon abbey 4 carucates in Burton,
besides other gifts;... '[Farrer, HKF II:75-77[6]; Cal. Chart. R.
iv. 475[8]]

~ also, 'the grant of the same Asketil of the gift of Thomas
Dispensator of ten bovates of land in his fee, in the same town'
of Burton on the Wolds, co. Leics. to Garendon abbey
[CCR IV:475[8]]

he acquired lands in Prestwold, possibly separate grants as well
as inheritance from his father/mother; but likely also of the
maritagium or inheritance of his wife Dionisia or Denise
[note her assent to grants in Prestwold to Bullington priory]

as 'Asketill son of Hugh de Prestwold', he made further grants,
confirming gifts of land in Prestwold, co. Leics. to Garendon abbey
by his father: CCR records
'the grant of Asketill son of Hugh de Prestwold of the gift of Hugh his
father, de Prestwold, of twenty acres of land in Prestwald with common
pasture, quit of all service to the said Asketill and his heirs;
the gift of the said Asketill of eight acres of land in the said town'
- CCR IV:475[8]

'Anketinus filius Hugonis de Prestald', made a gift of the church of
St. Andrew of Prestwold to the monks of Bullington priory before 28
Nov 1194 (witnessed by Philip de Kyme, who d. on that date):
"Anketinus filius Hugonis de Prestald ... Notum sit vobis me

- Stenton, Transcripts p. 93[7]

~ Note: the foregoing gift with the assent of ' Thomas, my son
and heir ' proves that the eldest surviving son of Ansketil de
Berges, or de Prestwold, at that date was Thomas.

his son Elias called himself 'Elias filius Anketilli de Prestwald' in
his grant and confirmation of the church of St. Andrew of Prestwold
to Bullington priory [Stenton, Transcripts p. 93[7]]

evidently resigned his lands to his son Elias and retired to become
chaplain of St. Andrew's, Prestwold - gifts of son Elias and of
Robert Putrel de Cotes to Bullington priory of lands in Prestwold
& c. are attested by 'Anketillo capellano de Prestwold' (Stenton,
Transcripts pp. 92-93[7]; Mon. Angl. 6/II, p. 952, NUM. III[9])

Farrer wrote (based on Cal. Charter Rolls, the Bullington priory
and other records):
' Asketill son of Hugh de Prestwold confirmed to Garendon abbey
the gift of Hugh his father of land in Prestwold [2]. Anketill
or Asketin was parson of Prestwold, and had sons Ellis and
Thomas [3]. Anketin son of Hugh of Prestwold, with the assent
of Sir Philip de Kime and Thomas the donor's son and Dionisia
the donor's wife, gave to the nuns of Bullington, Lincs., the
church of St. Andrew of Prestwold, Leics., [4] and Ellis son
of Anketill de Prestwold confirmed it to the nuns...' Farrer, HKF

of Burton on the Wolds, co. Leics.
'dispensator' of the Earl of Chester (possibly in succession to his
uncle Geoffrey)

'Thoma dispensatore', witness together with Elias, 'his brother'
of the gift of Ivo de Alspath, 'ca. 1160', of a virgate of land to
Monks Kirby (PRO, Meriden (Alspath) [ DR10/524 ][11],[13],[14].

316, 321, 334, 341, in G. Barraclough)'[13]

acquired Arnesby and Loughborough, co. Leics. on the death of his
brother Elias:
' The successor of Ellis was Thomas Despenser, who was amerced 1 mark
in 1166 for a default in Leicestershire. This Thomas was amerced
40s. in 1176 for forest trespass in Leicestershire.... he was
presumably the donor to [Garendon] abbey of 10 bovates in Burton
on the Wolds, Leics., of the fee of Asketil de Berges,...' [ Farrer,
HKF II:58, citing Pipe Roll 12 Hen II, p. 70; 22 Hen II, p. 185;
and Cal. Chart. Rolls iv. 475[6]]

~ the grant of land in Burton on the Wolds, co. Leics. to
Garendon abbey reads:
'the grant of the same Asketil of the gift of Thomas Dispensator
of ten bovates of land in his fee, in the same town' - CCR
IV:475[8]
Thomas obviously held his lands (or at least these 10 bovates) in
Burton of Ansketil de Berges (elsewhere Ansketil de Prestwold);
these may have been either inheritance from his mother, or
devised by his father, but were evidently therefore held of
his elder brother.

' Honors and Knights' Fees ii:58 etseq. gives Ellis Despenser
enfeoffed of Loughbourough by Hugh de Beauchamp after 1158.
Ellis succeeded by Thomas, living 1166. This Thomas donated 10
bovates in Burton on the Wolds, Leics. of the fee of ASKETIL
de Berges.' (the cite by Farrer references CCR IV:475)[15]

'Thomas Dispensator gave to Stephen de Segrave with Roese his
daughter in free marriage a rent of 2s in Burton', to them and
the heirs of their bodies' (CP Vol IV, p. 259n)[12]

in Barraclough, Charters[13])
