The first wife of Thomas Howard of Corby Castle (1677-1740) was Hon. Barbara Lowther, youngest daughter of the 1st Viscount Lonsdale. She was born 27 January 1689 at Lowther Hall, Westmorland, and baptized 6 February 1689 at St Michael Church, Lowther (IGI Batch #P003101). Five years after her father's death, when she was only age 16, Barbara clandestinely married her 28-year-old kinsman Thomas Howard, in June 1605, at Corby Castle in Cumberland.

Thomas Howard was Catholic, a fact which didn't sit well with Barbara's widowed mother, the dowager Viscountess Lonsdale, who spent over a year negotiating her wayward daughter's marriage settlement, and ensuring the security of the children born to her. When the Viscountess Lonsdale made out her will in 1712, she left her daughter Barbara out of it completely, apparently still unhappy over the secret marriage outside of the faith.

Barbara had three sons and three daughters with Thomas Howard, and died at Corby Castle on 17 July 1716 as a result of complications from the birth of her sixth child, William Howard, who also died. Mother and child were buried at Holy Trinity Church, Wetheral, Cumberland.

Leo has Barbara Lowther in his database, with no dates or ancestry for her parents, here:

Brad,

Presumably you mean June 1705 and not June 1605?
