Many of you have the Samwell ascent in your lines, which traces from
Alice (Freeman) Thompson (d 1664/5 New London, CT) up to her ancestors
Richard Samwell, esq of Northampton and his wife Amy Giffard.

Richard was Amy's first husband, she afterward marrying John Saxby,
merchant of the Staple, who just happens to be the brother of that
Margaret (Saxby) Cave who is both, an ancestor of the Duchess of York,
and whose grandson Roger Cave of Stanford married Margaret Cecil the
sister of Lord Burghley.

So. Margaret Saxby and her brother John Saxby, also had a brother
William Saxby who d.s.p. his WILL is dated 5 Apr 1517 and its rather
interesting because not only does he name his sister Margaret Cave "my
sister", but of his brother John he states "AND his five children".

Now why do I bring this up? Because Amy Giffard's first husband
Richard Samwell did not die until 3 May 1519, 2 years after this
will. Thus proving that John Saxby was married previously, and
throwing the mother of any of his children now into doubt.

Does anyone have the name of John Saxby's first wife?

Will Johnson

A somewhat related question: Can the name of Margaret Saxby's father
be established? In a number of pedigrees involving the Cave family
(including BP and the Leics visitations), he is called Thomas, but
other pedigrees of the Cave family, apparently based on a pedigree in
Nichols' Leics, call him John - an identification followed by Paget in
his ancestry of Prince Charles. The latter identification of course
could simply be a confusion with Margaret's brother John. Any ideas?
