Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 4 (1916): 132–133 (sub Deiville) and 5 (1926): 184–188 (sub Everingham) discuss Margaret _____, wife successively of John de Eyville, Knt. [died 1325-6] and Adam de Everingham, Knt., 1st Lord Everingham [died 1341].

Her exact date of death is not given in either the Deiville or Everingham accounts. However, the Everingham account 5 (1926): 188 states that Margaret "was living in Feb. 1334/4," and that she predeceased her 2nd husband, Sir Adam de Everingham.

The source for Margaret being alive in Feb. 1334/4 is given in footnote c on page 188 as a fine levied in the octaves of St. Hilary 2 Edward III [Feet of Fines, case 272, file 104, no.68; file 105, no. 57].

No evidence is provided that Margaret predeceased her 2nd husband, Sir Adam de Everingham.

Recently I encountered a Common Pleas lawsuit dated Michaelmas 1334, which shows that Margaret, then wife of Adam de Everingham, was living at that date. The lawsuit concerns her claim of dower from her previous marriage to John de Eyville. The defendant in this case was her step-son, Sir Robert de Eyville. An abstract of that lawsuit is provided below:

In Michaelmas term 1334 Adam de Everingham and Margaret his wife sued Robert de Eyvill, Knt., in the Court of Common Pleas regarding the third part of one messuage and 10 librates of rent in Adlingfleet, Yorkshire, which Margaret claimed as dower by the dotation of John de Eyvill her former husband.

The above record tells us that Margaret was living as late as Michaelmas term 1334 which in that year occurred between 10 October and 28 November.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
