I don't understand a bloody word of this, which is strange as I can read
a good bit of Interlingua without having learnt the language.
using the greek word for and- Kai or Kaj is very strange.

So, you understood the word "kaj", but you don't understand a "bloody
word". Very strange indeed.

I hate to say this, but my BS detector is beeping wildly.

... and I must say that I don't understand your last sentence, "bloody" or
not. How is using "kaj" any stranger than using Latin "et" or English "and"
or German "und" or Spanish "y" or Russian "i"? In the first place,
"instantaneous recognizability of written text" is rather far down the list of
the various competing goals Zamenhof had to balance, but even if it were a
higher priority, just in the nature of things the vast majority of the world's
population would be left out of the "instant recognizability" and have to just
simply learn the word, which ever source language you picked. With a word
like "telephone", which has been borrowed by lots of languages, many of them
not even remotely Indo-European, it perhaps makes sense to go with the
"international" word (although "international" would leave out more than a
billion speakers of various Sino-Tibetan languages, just to begin with), but
there _is_ no "international" word for the "and" concept.

I think that Dr. Zamenhof wanted to draw from many European languages,
Latin, and Greek. Whenever one learns a new language, there are many
(hundreds or thousands) of new words to learn. Esperanto is (from my
experience with an English-only upbringing) so much easier than the other
languages I tried (French, Spanish, Italian).

I've just invented a new language you should love - it's called
"Bradian", and it works like this: it's identical to English, except it adds
the word "fnord". Thus every English-speaking person in the world can now
also claim to speak, read and write "Bradian".

The point here being that just because you can comprehend much of a
language without learning it doesn't mean that native speakers of other
languages will - indeed, it might mean that they'll have an even harder time
learning it.

And if you "can't understand a bloody word of this", then maybe it means
it's time for you to take some time to learn the language. Think of that -
taking time to persue knowledge. What a concept!

Ja mikähän [what, waß] on "tyypillinen eurooppalainen", jos [if, wenn]

eurooppalaisesta vaan kiinalaisesta.

Jos kerran pitää suosia jotain pientä alueellista eliittiä, helpompi

Are you also able to *write* Interlingua texts as easy as you can read
them? I don't think so.

It is easy for me to read Interlingua texts, but I am not good ad
writing them, though. The rules for building words in Interlingua are
quite difficult, but in Esperanto they are very easy. Maybe because I am
a speaker of a Germanic lanugage (while Interlingua is a Romanic
lanugage).

That is also the point of Esperanto. *Everyone* - not only speakers of
non-Romanic language excluded - has to learn it. The advantages that
speakers of Romanic language have with Interlingua is not fair.

monstra [show, zeigen] sovente un certe irregularitate. Ma isto non significa
que formationes parallel es inacceptabile. Le majoritate de

general. Alora, io me permitterea [would permit, wuerde erlauben] scriber

incomprensibile a lectores casual. On non pote haber toto!

Illo functiona ben in
iste rolo.

parolas functiona assatis ben.

Intra iste quadro [framework, Rahmen] on tolera un grande
mesura de variation.

Esperanto has an excellent system for constucting new words, but resulting
compounds can be hard for non-initiates to recognise. The classic example is
"malsanulejo" (hospital), literally "un-well-person-place". The method has
advantages but also limitations, obviously. The Interlingua is "hospital",
which is easy to recognise *if* there is a similar word in a language you
know. (To be fair, I believe "hospitalo" has crept into Esperanto as a kind of
loan-word.)

Neither approach is necessarily better, but they tend to make the two
languages good for different things. Among other things, Esperanto serves very
well as the "glue" for the world-wide intercultural community of Esperantists.
Interlingua can help you communicate with people who know the international
vocabulary of technology and science, even people who've never heard of
Interlingua.

Tio pensigas min pri ideo: eble esperanto-13 estu reformo.

Do oni fleksias tute laŭregule

zv uninf (mi havas), zv univf (mi havis), zv unibf (mi havos)
zv granf (mi tenas), zv gravf (mi tenis), zv grabf (mi tenos)

Do oni diras:

Jes, sed tamen tio kostas pli da peno skribi Esperante ol skribi

Chu tiam tiuj kunmetoj estas internacie rekoneblaj. La pleja rekonebleco
estus la forto de Interlingua. In Interlingua-lingva novajhletero mi
vidis formoj kiel "interviewator" kaj "boxator". Mi emas pensi ke
"interviewer" kaj "boxer" estus bli bonaj, char "interview" kaj

Chu vi interesighas pri aliaj plan- (au artefaritaj) lingvoj kiel
Volapuk, Ido, Novial, kaj Occidental?

I could understand everything of Interlingua.
Like many people I learned Ancient Greek and Latin in secundary school.
The purpose of Esperanto is to function as a auxiliary language for

Latinan dum mia mezgrada instruado.
funkcii kiel monda helplingvo.

edukitoj. Sxi facile trovis plurajn elstarajn lingvikistojn por labori por
sxi, interalie Andreon Martinetan.
franca verkisto, jxurnalisto kaj kompreneble intelektulo Juliano Benda.

'Vanderbilto'. Tio konfirmas, ke sxi estis la mono malantavx IALA. Kaj
versxajne malantavx sxi estis ankoravx pli da mono. Nu, se filozofiumi,
evidente mono ne cxion acxetas... Gxi acxetis, almenavx portempe, Andreon

jarcento. Eble la ambasdoro (Henrio Kabot-Logxo) estis ilia ido, sed
la proverbo ne temas pri li.

Eble vi miskomprenis; mi bone scias pri la holmsa poemo "On Beacon Hill in
Boston, the Land of the Baked Bean and the Cod" ktp.

Mi, estante japano, tutkore certigas, ke ordinaraj japanaj

Occidental. Sed mi ne povas mem skribi ilin. Mi ekhavis impreson,
ke, por nelatinidlingvanoj, lerni skribi Interlingua-n (t.e. akiri
aktivan lingvokapablon) estus neniom malpli malfacile ol, ek-e, la
francan.

ties memevidenta latinidlingveco.

As I understand it, the "strategy" behind Interlingua is not that everyone
can read it without training, but that a maximally large number of people can
read it with as little training as possible. The main idea is to avoid the
dilemma that faces all IAL projects: At the start, there's no practical
reason to learn the IAL, because only a few idealists understand it; yet
without a practical reason to learn it, only a few idealists bother to. It
can be said that even Esperanto, despite its successes, has not overcome this
problem. With Interlingua, there is already a large group that understand it,
either completely or largely. Our hope is that, under the right
circumstances, this initial advantage will be enough to "get the ball
rolling."

This is essentially my reason for supporting Interlingua more strongly than
Esperanto. Interlingua's strategy strikes me as one that's well worth trying.
That's no reason for other people (I mean Esperantists) to give up their
particular strategies.

Amicalmente,

Chris

italiano que on acquirer per leger le menus in restaurantes italian.

externe: Si io me exprime, qui va comprender me?

> malfacile lernebla ol esperanto.

Io vide le cosa como plus simple. Si on pote usar un lingua pro communicar
individuo.

>Do pro tio, ghi vershajne lasus la

Per apprender interlingua on acquerir un grande parte

pro provocar alcuno), io va exprimer me in un maniera schematic e polemic:

Interlingua: politica realista de ingagiamento
Esperanto: politica utopian

Writing at a time when Esperanto was growing rapidly and seemed well on the
way to coming into widespread use, Dr Zamenhof makes a reasonable case.
Eighty or ninety years later, with early hopes disappointed and in some cases
abandoned, it makes sense to consider other strategies, and other goals, even
ones that are less perfect than the idea of a universal non-ethnic second
language. What I see in Interlingua is an IAL with a less lofty goal than
Esperanto, but perhaps more chance of achieving that goal. I say "perhaps",
and for this reason I have no animus against Esperanto (although frequent
sarcastic attacks from certain individuals take their toll!)

In English: "I have met only two categories of persoans who can understand
Interlingua without previous initiation: those who have seriously studied
Latin (they're getting rarer and rarer) and ... the Esperantists.

Aunis's is just another contribution to a long, long debate. Some exaggerate
Interlingua comprehensibility, others minimise it. Aunis's opinion is
remarkable in only one sense. He asserts that Interlingua is comprehensible
to people who know eithe Latin or Esperanto - and *not* apparently to people
who know Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese. But these languages indisputably
have a closer resemblance to Interlingua, in terms of vocabulary and grammar,
than either Latin or Esperanto.

Of course, for Aunis, it would hardly do to have Interlingua accessible a
significant portion of the 500 million or so south Romanophones. On the other
hand, to its accessibility to Esperantists might be reassuring to some (I
meand, the sort who see Interlingua as an enemy). They can say to themselves,
"Well I can read it, it's true, but I'm part of a tiny linguistic elite." The
issue he raises in worth discussing, but on basis of facts, not fantasy.

I've read Don's excerpt. It's an interesting polemic, and worth reading, but
despite his scholarly tone, Bernasconi seems rather unfamiliar with the
primary material on Interlingua, even some of the documents that he cites.
For example, he mis-defines Alexander Gode's concept of "Romania" (the
translator obtrudes his own, even less accurate definition). More
importantly, his account of Interlingua's word-selection process is deeply
confused. As a result, I feel his theoretical speculations are poorly
grounded. This is one case where imagination cannot compensate for lack of
detailed knowledge.

Those who prefer to get their information at first hand may want to check out
these links to some of Gode's key writings.

(parallel a "aptitude") e "capitanato" (parallel a "capitania") [anglese
"captaincy"]. Illes etiam permitte derivativos ultraregular como
"scribitura", "corrumpitive" e "incidition" (in loco de "scriptura",
"corruptive" e "incision), "wherever it seems stylistically possible or
preferable".

Ma vostre puncto es valide. Si on usava iste formas regularisante in tote
esperanto relexificate.

In breve, on pote dicer que interlingua crea nove parolas secundo le analogia.

"As for compounds, every formation is considered active (or autonomous) if
both elements constituting the compound occur in other compounds of full
internationality which thus serve as models."

"aqueducto". Mi amico Kjell Rehnstrom suggere etiam "raneducto" - un tunnel
infra un autovia pro proteger ranas [frogs, Frosche] migratori. In altere
parolas, on construe nove parolas totemente in le contexto de parolas ja
existente.

Alcun punctos additional:

-isar e multo alteres.

(2) Il remane ver que on, per habitude, on non crea nove parolas tanto sovente
como in esperanto. On tenderea dicer "parve autobus", "pauc intelligente" in
esperanto. On dice "machina a scriber", non "scribermachina".

In isto,
on "divina" o "predice" (in un maniera de parlar) le membros mancante de un
familia de parolas. Per exemplo, le existentia de "intelligente",
"intelligible", e "intellecto" suggere un verbo "intelliger" - [to figure
out, erkennen]. "Nepotismo" suggere "nepotar" o (melio) "nepotisar" (io
regratia iste exemplo a Don Harlow).

Io participa a vices in le lista
correspondential AUXLANG. Io trova tote illos interessante. Un question
importantissime pro me es, A qual scopos pote iste o ille lingua servar?
Secundo mi opinion, solo esperanto e interlingua ha alcun prospectos realista

"Cinque
?linguas artificial"?

Tio estis stultega frazo. Tion mi ne celis. Skribi Interlingua-e estas
pli malfacile ol skribi Esperante.

Mi sufiche bone komprenas kion vi skribas chi-fadene, sed tamen mi
provizore ne sukcesos skribi Interlingua-e. Mi povus klopodi:

Io relativemente ben comprene que vos scribe in iste thread?, sed tamen

Mia
gepatra lingvo estas la nederlanda (ghermana lingvo).

Sed kiam tiuj "derivativos ultraregular" estas "stylistically possible
or preferable"?
tamen preferas (malpliregulajn) "aptitude", "capitania", "scriptura",
"corruptive" kaj "incision".

anglan. Lauvorte "Volapuk" signifas "Worldspeak", char "vol" venas el
"world" kaj "puk" el "speak" (fakte sur "puk" devas esti umlauto, sed mi

Ghi ege
similas al Esperanto. Esperantisto facile povas legi Idajn tekstojn. La
akuzativo (Esperanto) ne plu estas deviga. La participan sistemon oni
ankorau konservis. La supersignoj estas anstatauataj per duliteroj. Mi
ne uzas supersignojn pro Netscape. Ido havas "normalan" alfabeton, do
ghi ankau havas q, w, x kaj y, sed tamen w nur ekzistas en vortoj kiel
"wiskio" (whisky), wato (Watt).
Interlingua. Kelkfoje Ido havas por iu afero ghermanan vorton, dum
Esperanto havas latinidan vorton. Escepte de 4 sufiksoj, oni ne plu
povas uzi sufiksojn memstare.
kaj pluraligho.

Novial similas al Esperanto kaj Ido, sed ghi tamen malpli similas al
literaturliston.

Occidental estas farita de Von Wahl. La verkinto havas fakte la saman
principon kiel Gode kaj Blair uzis pri Interlingua. Pleja internacia
rekonebleco. Sed tamen Occidental havas pli da Esperantismojn ol
Interlingua havas.

Manders (bedaurinde Nederlandlingve). Ghi
temas pri Volapuk, Esperanto, Ido, Occidental kaj Novial, kaj
la IALA, kiu okupighas pri la Interlingua-a projekto. Mi promesis fari
Esperantlingvan rezumon de chi tiu (por interlingvistoj)
interesega libro. Mi chiam ne faris tion.
- "Lingvo kaj vivo" de G. Waringhien. Vershajne tiu libro estas por vi
pli tauga, char vi pasive sufiche bone regas Esperanton (alie
chi tiu diskuto ne eblus). Ghi temas pri la laboro de Zamenhof. Estas
prototipoj de Esperanto: Lingwe Uniwersala (1878) kaj
Pra-Esperanto I (1881).

Jes! Mi achetis "Vijf kunsttalen" che Universala Esperanto-Asocio. Ghi
havas apartan chambron kun multaj (500!) libroj pri aliaj artefaritaj
lingvoj. Chu vi iom komprenas mian (t.e. nederlandan) lingvon?

In article <6rjll4$h9c$1...@balder.adm.ku.dk>,

debe haber limitos, o on va perder le comprension. Ma proviste que on succede
