Subj: Quotes sought for major book

Hi,

Prof Joshua Fishman has written to me asking for material for a book he
is writing. He is Professor Emeritus at Ferkauf Grad School of Psychology
in New York, and is currently a visiting Professor at the Dept of
Linguistics at Stanford. He is also the editor of the international
journal of the sociology of linguistics. This is what he needs:

"What I need are two or three quotations (of some 2-4 pages each) 'In
ecstatic praise of Gaelic'. These statements should be exhortative,
passionate, consciousness-raising and symbol-invoking (appealing to
tradition etc etc). These can come from any century, or from any area or
author, known or unknown, and if you send such to me (identifying the
sources carefully and fully), I will gratefully acknowledge your kind
assistance in the book entitled "Nationalism and Language" which I am
now struggling to complete. I know that it takes real specialists to
locate such statements, so please accept my heartfelt gratitude in
advance for whatever help you can give me."

Until 22nd March 92, Prof Fishman can be located at:

345 Sheridan Avenue, Apt 207
Palo Alto, CA, 94306
Tel: 415 858 2659
(judging by his fax number, the above phone may be "856-2659"

His number at Stanford is 415 723 4282, fax 415 723 4235 (address faxes
to "J A Fishman, Linguistics Dept.")

It doesn't seem to matter whether it's Irish, Scots or Manx Gaelic.

Craig
