Hi All

Just to let you all know the news that Ranulph sadly passed away peacefully, shortly before Christmas. He was a valued contributor to our list and will I’m sure be missed.

Very sorry to hear that. We met Ranulph and his wife back in July when he visited us to collect the 30" screen we were selling. We had a long chat to a very fascinating man. He'd mentioned he wasn't well and was in treatment for cancer. This shows what an amazing man he was - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranulph_Glanville
I'll be raising a glass tonight.

Thanks Sam, despite being the messenger of sad tidings. Thanks too Graham for the link - I had no idea of the wealth of knowledge and experience behind the name. Not just a loss to us and his family and friends but to a much broader community too it seems.

I was sad to hear that Ranulph has died.  He was one of the most unusual members of the group and also one of the most distinguished.  Some time ago, when we some of us shared photos of ourselves, there was one from Ranulph.  I have been searching for it but can't find it.  It must have been at leat 3 years ago.  Is anybody able to locate it?

How lovely it is to share with people, even if one never meets them physically. I don't contribute too often but I do follow the posts from Spain, and feel like I know some of you as if we had actually met. Ranulph was one such and I wish his spirit a wonderful onward journey. It was a pleasure to have known him.

What sad news for a Wednesday morning. And, reading the Wikipedia entry, what an extraordinary man we had in our midst. My thoughts are with Ranulph's friends and family and I will certainly follow Sam's suggestion and raise a glass tonight.

Oh, I am very sad to hear that Ranulph has died. He was so much a part of the group and a regular contributor.
He told me a few months ago that he had not long to live, but said he hadn’t told the group.

May he rest in peace.

PS  I was glad to see the photo, Virginia. Thank you.

Yes, thanks for taking the time to let us know Sam.

Ranulph was indeed a wonderful contributor to the group, and a sad loss indeed. The Wikipedia page about his life and work is an interesting read for sure, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

The nature of an online group like this, means we're faceless, albeit friendly..... I wonder if anyone knows a way we might be in touch with his family, to send a card on behalf of SMUG? In true SMUG/cybernetic fashion, perhaps it could be something online that we all sign and email over? Or, I could collate some of the comments from here and send if someone had a way of contacting them?

Just a thought...

Rest in peace Ranulph. I may have met him in the early days when we met in the pub next to Brighton Railway Station but what a legacy he leaves behind! As someone only a few months younger than him very humbling to read his Wikipedia entry.

Hello All,

Gosh, so sad to hear about Ranulph. I had a picture in my head of what he looked like. (It involved a handlebar moustache, so probably wrong). He always came across as someone with wise words on SMUG.

I’ve just read his amazing Wikipedia page.

Sending lots of kind thoughts to his family and friends.

Best wishes,
Catherine

In October 1987 I was lucky enough to become a student at Portsmouth School of Architecture, where Ranulph was one of the tutors to the 1st year studio. Coming to discussion of not only Architecture, but philosophy and cybernetics was mindblowing to a student fresh from science A' Levels. Ranulph was very approachable, only daunting because of he complexity of his thought.

As if that wasn't enough, Ranulph did something else that still contributes to my life today. Together with Jay Potts, he introduced a Macintosh to the school of Architecture. Firstly just one, which soon gained a second floppy drive (the luxury). Then more followed. Never before had I encountered a computer that could be explored without reference to a manual. I bought my first in 1990.

Many years later, through my involvement with LMUG, I joined the SMUG web forum, and was delighted to see that familiar name, and have further access to the thoughts of Ranulph.

Thank You Ranulph, may you rest in peace.

Condolences to you all, and to Ranulph's family. As Sam says, raise a glass in his honour. I know he would appreciate that.

Paul

In that case, I'd like to add a small one: when I handed over admin role (doffs cap to new boss) because life had gone a bit mad, he sent me a very gracious message thanking me for my efforts, acknowledging that a lot of invisible work probably went on, and - most thoughtfully of all - demanding I not take the time to reply as that would not be helpful to me.

Which I thought made him a complete star (I had many similar messages, so thanks to all of you).

Most of all this has all confirmed to me that the friendly helpful atmosphere here is exactly right, as everyone is treated as a welcome member, whoever they are. I'm rather proud of the fact that he was treated with the respect he deserved here even though hardly anyone knew of his outstanding career. Most of all, it wouldn't have made much difference, actually! And having read the wikipedia page, I'm deeply impressed. What a guy! He'll be missed here and I'm sure elsewhere too.

It’s wonderful to hear all these stories about Ranulph and even see a photo. I’m sorry that I don’t think I ever got the chance to meet Ranulph in person. Still it’s been great that we could be part of this group with him over the years and know him in some way. What an incredible person.

RIP Ranulph.

All the best,

I remember that Jason vetoed it all (or something like that, correct me if I’m smearing you Jason). I think the basic idea was that if we wanted to do that maybe it should be setup on it’s own wee website rather than messing up the forum with all those thousands of photos … ;-)

There's nothing to stop you editing your google profiles to add a photo but I don't think we should flood everyones emails with photos of us all.

Another alternative is a cafe group alongside the main list which a lot of the freecycle groups do successfully where you can have off topic chats about anything that doesn't fit within the remit of the main list and people could choose to subscribe to (or not).

If anyone is interested in this idea, message me directly and i'll explore it further if there are enough takers.
