Dashboard/Widgets failing to open

After removing some widgets I didn't want to appear, (as per instructions in "The missing manual") I can no longer open anything!
When I press the key (F4 or F12) or click on the icon in Applications, the screen darkens slightly but nothing happens. 
The manual says I can't remove original Mac widegets, so they must still be there!.Thanks for any advice.
