Also, Ram, sirji, is it at Bowring or in School?  Your two e-mails contradict on this + as Farhan says on the dates.  Also, why 22nd Wed and not a weekend like 11th Sat.?  Do tell all.  I am fine for both days, though must say that if its mid-week 22nd that'll be a bit of a bummer from the drinking front considering the next day's a working one !!

Wow - looking forward to it! Ram, thanks for pulling this together!

Like Sid says lets do this on a Saturday - mid-week is tough. So 11th or 18th (18th may be better since there's a higher chance of out-of-towners being here closer to Christmas)

Hi All,

Wow, I find it difficult to fathom that 20 years have gone by, in fact
if not for this email I perhaps would not have noted it. My memories
of SJBHS are fresh as yesterday, I am sure many of you feel this way
too. Wish you all a happy and nostalgic reunion.

Hi guys,

Ramprasad and I spoke a little earlier today and I was thinking that
we should make this 20 year milestone a little more special than the
usual fare. It's great that it's going to be in school, which makes in
special. But here are a few things I'm thinking of here:

1. Invite all our teachers and felicitate them.- Perhaps make a
customized "Thank you" plaque of some sort that we can hand out to
each of them.

2. If someone could make a multimedia presentation of some sort (maybe
a short video) with pictures, some testimonies from our batchmates
recollecting school days, funny incidents, messages to your favourite
teacher etc, we could play this and then do the presentation
ceremony. I'm signing up to help with this activity, but need help
with production. Perhaps Ryan or someone else can help with the
editing, production etc... Any of you guys who want to say something
special, in general or to our teachers could also shoot your own
videos (<20s seconds) at home and send it in (we'll decide how, soon).
We'll do the mixing and come out with the final video.

3. Launch the scholarship so it can benefit someone in the coming
school year.

4. Gift each of the teachers an insurance policy or some other
instrument (maybe a equity linked mutual fund) that will give them
decent returns when they retire. Off course, this will mean we all
pool in money and get this done in each teachers' name (we could do
this after the event, so it remains a surprise), but can identify the
"what" in advance. If any of us are in the investment/insurance
business and can make some recommendations, that would be swell.

On item(4), I'm sure all of you would agree that we are what we are
today only because of our teachers and parents. Our teachers don't get
fancy salaries in school nor do they retire handsomely. They lead
humble lives and in many ways, have sacrificed a lot over the years.
We owe a lot to them and it feels right to do something special for
them collectively. Most of us have tasted success in what we have set
out to do in our lives and some more than others. While we are not
going to go around asking for money, I think each one of us should
step up in this area and do the best you can. It will certainly make
the 20 year milestone meaningful for all of us. I argued with myself
that this is perhaps a silver jubilee type event, but then quickly
realized that our teachers are not getting any younger and the sooner
we do this, the better for them and for us financially.

The idea is to get your thoughts and reactions and then decide if we
can do all of this by the 11th Dec, 2010.

Regards,
Vijay

Hi All,

I second the idea about the video and setting up some kind of fund
(does the OBA already have something like this?). I have a lot of the
class photos however they are back in India and I may have to get
someone to scan and send them to you.

Hi Vijay,

Good to hear from you. Both Ram & I are on the managing committee of
the OBA and our batch i.e 1990, does have a scholarship currently
running in the name of Dr David Chaterjee with a current corpus of Rs
2.23 lacs. It would be really nice if this corpus could be enhanced.
Currently, this corpus earns interest from an FD and some have been
invested in Bonds and Mutual funds (basically all the funds are pooled
together and the earnings are apportioned according to the corpus).
The earnings are disbursed to the school at the beginning of each
academic year. There is committee made up of the principal, three
teachers and two old boys who decide on the granting of scholarships
and this year the OBA has given scholarships to about 120 students in
the school. This includes our batch scholarship as well. We do not
have a separate grant as the corpus is too small. If we do have a
large corpus, we could grant individual scholarships from the corpus
(may be eventually we could do this).

Currently, the OBA pays the premium on medical insurance for the
staff. It’s with a little help from the school as well as the total
premium is well out of the earnings from the corpus and the school
pays Rs 2 lacs with the rest being paid for by the OBA.

The OBA also gives a monthly pension to retired teachers. Though it
may not seem much (Rs 2,500/- PM) it is bundled with medical insurance
as well and not just for the retired teacher but for the family as
well and which continues even after the death of the teacher for the
family.

Currently, the OBA needs funds for scholarships and staff welfare. We
are running short of funds as year on year the number of students who
benefit from scholarships is increasing as the number of students
being admitted from the economically backward sections of society is
only increasing as with the staff. You would be aware that the school
started nursery and the lower sections which resulted in an increase
in staff (both teaching and non teaching). Now these sections have
been scrapped due to class room availability, the school is coming up
with a new block (sports complex) which will have about 8 class rooms
along with the sports complex. This only means that there will be more
staff and also an increase in the fees. Today, students pay Rs
24,000/- a year for tuitions and another 14,000/- towards uniform and
books. With the new facility in the next five years it’s only set to
go up and hence the burden on scholarships and staff welfare. It would
really be nice if our guys could only look at the initiative that we
have started with the scholarship and take it forward. We need not
look at all aspects as it would be impossible to achieve everything.

Felicitating the teachers, in my opinion, is best left for the silver
jubilee. Every year the batch celebrating the silver jubilee does this
and it happens with the OBA being involved in bringing the batch
together. Hence every year the teachers are being felicitated by the
silver jubilee batch and we would only be duplicating this.

It would also be nice to talk to you as well as I could keep you
updated on all activities of the OBA. Please send me your number.

The multimedia presentation is a very good idea. Please go-ahead with
it. Any help from my side, will be glad to help.

Hi Sashi,

Thank you for taking time to educate me/us on everything that is going on. It's all great stuff and I have to agree with your recommendations on where the focus should be.  I think a lot of us were under the impression that the scholarship had not taken off as yet, happy to hear it has.

So, it boils down to 2 things for the 11th Dec.  The multimedia and raising the corpus for our scholarship so it can stand on it's own.  I'm proposing that we raise the minimum amount for this reunion to a number that everyone feels comfortable with.  By the way, when did the last round of fund raising happen for the scholarship? My number is 900 839 9077, let's talk.

On the video, I'll send out a separate note so the topic is not lost in this conversation.

Regards,
Vijay

Hi Vijay,

The last effective round to drum up contributions to the Chat Fund happened over two years ago, at the very start.  That's the effort that resulted in most of the Rs. 2.23 lac collected thus far, being realized (a trickle happened after).  We should make another effort to get contributions in, as much as possible.

Best,
Siddharth

Dear Batchmates,

The momentum seems to be on for our 20th year reunion next month.  I am looking forward to seeing many, if not most, of you at this reunion.

So, while Ram coordinates that event, it is incumbent on me (I have strict instructions from Sashi in this regard !) to once again call upon each of you to contribute generously to the Dr. David Chatterjee Memorial Fund of the Class of 1990 that we have going.  We have a modest corpus which we must try to grow as much as possible if our efforts are going to have any significant impact on the cause.  Thank you in advance for all your contributions -- it will be gratefully received and faithfully applied.

You may make cheques out to “Bangalore Jesuit Education Society A/C St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School OBA”

And send the cheques to me at my office address below or bring it along with you for the reunion.  Please write clearly on the reverse of your cheque, "Dr David Chatterjee Memorial Fund".  I will coordinate the receipts to be delivered to you.  Please remember that each of your contributions has tax benefits -- you can claim the donation as a deduction and the receipt I will arrange for you will be needed for such claim.

And, this is an appeal especially for the US-based batchmates........Your US Dollar contributions go that much further in Indian Rupees to help this great cause (not as much as it used to, for sure, but still good enough for us !!).

So, could I call upon each you guys in the USA to contribute well and with open hearts?

We can extend similar tax benefits to you guys, for which you will need to route your payments through Jimmy Anklesaria's US fund which has such US tax benefits (so, please do not simply cut your cheque).  I will be happy to share the details (of this routing for your donations) with those US-based batchmates interested in contributing.

Sadly, for other overseas batchmates (i.e., non US-based), I'm afraid the OBA does not have a similar arrangement that will help you contribute (with tax benefits) from outside India to this fund.  Of course, if any of you continue to maintain a bank account in India (or, indeed, have a non-resident onshore account), you can still cut your cheques in the name of "Bangalore Jesuit Education Society A/C St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School OBA" and get the same tax benefits.

Apologies for this long explanation of methods of contributing -- I guess international terrorism is to blame for why we have such rules to check all foreign contributions (especially).

Once again, thank you much in advance for all your generous contributions; grateful !

Best regards,
Siddharth

Thanks much, Gautam, your cheques for a total of Rs. 50,000/- have been received.  Sashi / I will arrange to give you the receipts.

I have a batchmate (for whom I can vouch; that he is indeed a batchmate, and who contacted me separately) who joins in matching Gautam's contribution, but who wishes to remain anonymous.

So, guys, we already have upped our corpus to Rs. 3.23 lacs with these two contributions; please join me in gratefully thanking these batch mates of ours.  Could I please once again call upon each of you to contribute whatever you are willing and able, regardless of the size of such contribution?  Please also remember, you can also reach out to me separately and directly to give me your contributions if you wish your name and the size of your contribution to remain anonymous to the rest of the batch.

Looking forward to meeting each of you on the 18th, receiving your contributions before or I'll collect from you that day !!

Warm regards,
Siddharth

Nice of you to take note and communicate.

May I suggest we should as a practice remember our former batch mates who have passed away – names that come to mind are KT Aiyappa & Melvin.

Would be nice to note their birthdays ! I’m sure we have candies in school from them on their birthdays – especially the early days.

Ciao !

Dear Guys,

Sorry for all these instruction e-mails.

Could each of you contributing to the Chat Fund please also send me (along with your cheques) a signed letter addressed to the OBA, St. Joseph's Boys' High School, Bangalore, giving the following details:

(a) your full name,

(b) your full postal address, and

(c) your Income Tax Permanent Account Number (i.e., PAN Card Number).

This letter is required for the OBA to issue your respective Section 80-G Income Tax Deduction Receipts.  Please send these signed letters (in original) to my address below.  I know some of you have already sent in your cheques; but, sorry, could you please send me this letter as well.  Thanks much !

This is a set of instructions to India-based / resident batchmates, or overseas batchmates who are contributing from their domestic / onshore rupee accounts.

For those US-based batchmates contributing through Jimmy Anklesaria's trust fund, Sashi / I will come back on what supporting documentation will be required for you to avail of the tax benefits.

Thank you all for your patience !

Best,

We should try to put together a small montage on these late batch mates of ours; poignant tribute to them while we all celebrate the 20th anniversary reunion.

Any snaps, letters, articles about them, perhaps even the articles they wrote in our school annual etc. would do to serve as reminders.  I have some snaps of Avinash Motreja (if my memory serves me correct) and I'll pull out their pieces from the old school annuals I have.

So, here's are the ones we remember (as I can recall / gather):

(1) Mevril Rozario.

(2) Suresh Pasangha.

(3) K T Aiyappa.

(4) Avinash Motreja.

(5) Calvin Sequiera.
