Wow, I find it difficult to fathom that 20 years have gone by, in fact
if not for this email I perhaps would not have noted it. My memories
of SJBHS are fresh as yesterday, I am sure many of you feel this way
too. Wish you all a happy and nostalgic reunion.
Regards,
Claudius Tewari
I second the idea about the video and setting up some kind of fund
(does the OBA already have something like this?). I have a lot of the
class photos however they are back in India and I may have to get
someone to scan and send them to you.
Regards,
Claudius
Good to hear from you. Both Ram & I are on the managing committee of
the OBA and our batch i.e 1990, does have a scholarship currently
running in the name of Dr David Chaterjee with a current corpus of Rs
2.23 lacs. It would be really nice if this corpus could be enhanced.
Currently, this corpus earns interest from an FD and some have been
invested in Bonds and Mutual funds (basically all the funds are pooled
together and the earnings are apportioned according to the corpus).
The earnings are disbursed to the school at the beginning of each
academic year. There is committee made up of the principal, three
teachers and two old boys who decide on the granting of scholarships
and this year the OBA has given scholarships to about 120 students in
the school. This includes our batch scholarship as well. We do not
have a separate grant as the corpus is too small. If we do have a
large corpus, we could grant individual scholarships from the corpus
(may be eventually we could do this).
Currently, the OBA pays the premium on medical insurance for the
staff. It’s with a little help from the school as well as the total
premium is well out of the earnings from the corpus and the school
pays Rs 2 lacs with the rest being paid for by the OBA.
The OBA also gives a monthly pension to retired teachers. Though it
may not seem much (Rs 2,500/- PM) it is bundled with medical insurance
as well and not just for the retired teacher but for the family as
well and which continues even after the death of the teacher for the
family.
Currently, the OBA needs funds for scholarships and staff welfare. We
are running short of funds as year on year the number of students who
benefit from scholarships is increasing as the number of students
being admitted from the economically backward sections of society is
only increasing as with the staff. You would be aware that the school
started nursery and the lower sections which resulted in an increase
in staff (both teaching and non teaching). Now these sections have
been scrapped due to class room availability, the school is coming up
with a new block (sports complex) which will have about 8 class rooms
along with the sports complex. This only means that there will be more
staff and also an increase in the fees. Today, students pay Rs
24,000/- a year for tuitions and another 14,000/- towards uniform and
books. With the new facility in the next five years it’s only set to
go up and hence the burden on scholarships and staff welfare. It would
really be nice if our guys could only look at the initiative that we
have started with the scholarship and take it forward. We need not
look at all aspects as it would be impossible to achieve everything.
Felicitating the teachers, in my opinion, is best left for the silver
jubilee. Every year the batch celebrating the silver jubilee does this
and it happens with the OBA being involved in bringing the batch
together. Hence every year the teachers are being felicitated by the
silver jubilee batch and we would only be duplicating this.
It would also be nice to talk to you as well as I could keep you
updated on all activities of the OBA. Please send me your number.
The multimedia presentation is a very good idea. Please go-ahead with
it. Any help from my side, will be glad to help.
Regards

Sid,
Nice of you to take note and communicate.
May I suggest we should as a practice remember our former batch mates who have passed away – names that come to mind are KT Aiyappa & Melvin.
Would be nice to note their birthdays ! I’m sure we have candies in school from them on their birthdays – especially the early days.
Ciao !

Dear Batchmates,
In all our busy lives, please take a moment to remember today, Suresh Pasangha of our batch, on his 19th death anniversary. I believe there is a service for him at the Infant Jesus Church, in Vivek Nagar, at 6:00 p.m. today.
Siddharth
