Dear All

Today is Wolrd Water day (WWD 2007) and the theme for this year is “Coping with Water Scarcity”

SDF is launching a paper on Water scarcity Crisis in Sindh.

'Coping with Water Scarcity' is the theme for World Water Day 2007, which is celebrated each year on 22 March. FAO will be the coordinating agency within the UN system for the theme. The theme highlights the significance of cooperation and importance of an integrated approach to water resource management of water at both international and local levels.
Equity and rights, cultural and ethical issues are essential to be addressed when dealing with limited water resources. Imbalances between availability and demand, the degradation of groundwater and surface water quality, intersectoral competition, interregional and international disputes, all center around the question of how to cope with scarce water resources.
The theme was decided among all members of UN Water at the World Water Week in Stockholm in August 2006. However, the Secretariat for UN Water based at UN DESA in New York is serving as the first point of contact within the UN system to deliver a coordinated response. .
Please visit the UN Water for Life Decade site for the latest information on World Water Day 2007

Profile of Nusrat Bhutto:

A Forgotten Vanguard of Pakistan’s Political History

Loneliness

Loneliness like a good, old friend
visits my house to pour wine in the evening.
And we sit together, waiting for the moon,
and for your face to sparkle in every shadow.  (FAIZ AHMED FAIZ)

Are we a short memory nation? Do we have a habit to forget our legends? If not than why we have stop thinking about our mother of the nation, which is in an intensive care, she is ill and perhaps serious and she is “struggling to save life”

I don’t know, how many of us do hang on to this reality that we have a lady to remember, especially when there is an inspiration required to struggle against anti-people and anti-democracy syndromes like Musharraf regime.

Every day hundreds of people try to get in touch with the leadership of Pakistan’s leading political party PPP. From MBB to AAZ every one is trying to have “Cordial” relationship with the TOP BOSSES of the party, and why not because this is “power politics”.

Every day many of us try to “please” leaders to let them know that we are fighting for democracy and thus this will ultimately support PPP’s position… may be self-satisfactory Wishful Thinking…??????

A Young, beautiful, dynamic and civilised Iranain Kurd lady Nusrat Ispahani, daughter of a wealthy Iranian businessman came to karachi at the time of the Subcontinent's partition, from a very ich and elegent cultural background of persia. A Kurd blood converted into  great patroit Pakistani blood and She fought as against Zia as today the Kurds of Iraq are fighting against Bush

She married a graceful young politician of pakistan Zulfi Bhutto, who has changed the orthodox trends of pakistani politics and  become a great reformer of the nation.

She fought against Ayub’s dictatroship, she stood shoulder to shoulder to her husband and the entire nation against Zia’a dictatorship and during Bhutto’s controversial "trial and execution” she stood firm with the nation and did not compromise. She was the vanguard of MRD struggle against Zia. She lead MRD movement and in return what she got, hanged husband, dead bodies of two young sons, and ultimatly herelf in exile.

Musharraf gave her a gift for her unforgettable scarificies, an accountability court’s conviction in absentia and sentenced her to two years rigorous imprisonment under Section 31-A of the NAB Ordinance 1999 in a reference of acquiring properties and assets beyond her known sources of income.

She was continuously elected to the National Assembly from the family constituency of Larkana, Sindh, Pakistan. During MBB’s governments in the past she held positions of a cabinet minister and Deputy Prime Minister. She currently resides with her daughter in DUBAI and suffers from the combined effects of a stroke and Alzheimer's Disease.

Every One in Pakistan and abroad, party workers, sympathizers and well-wishers within Pakistan and abroad to pray for the health of Begum Nusrat Bhutto, former first lady of Pakistan, widow of Zulfi and mother of Shaheed Murtaza and PPP’s Chairperson Benazir Bhutto and leader of millions of people of Pakistan.

Please review my article “Profile of Nusrat Bhutto: A Forgotten Vanguard of Pakistan’s Political History” in Daily Khabroon on March 28th, 2007

I understand Begum Nusrat Bhutto is ill and have an irreversable ailment some thing which will sadden any tender heart. What a Tragedy that she has gone thru most turbulent times in her life. The nation we live in mostly weep and honour only those who have gone away. Has any one above politics ever cared to celeberate her Birthday where as in today's times every tom, dick and harry is celeberating thier Birthdays.
Let the Civil Society wake up and form a Society dedicated to her life and work and call it Begum Nusrat Bhutto Society for the Emancipation of Women's Dignity or some some thing similar to that to work for Women's emancipation while keeping her Life as a role model and also write her Biography. I in my humble way can only offer her my Highest Salutations. May God grant her Good Health and Quality Life.

Pakistan under complete anarchy

This moment is very alarming for all of those who believe in democratic, progressive and peaceful Pakistan

Dear friends
Militants wreck havoc in Tank district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan, which is ruled by Religious forces Alliance (MMA). A collage professor was killed by religious extremists, because of opposition of taking schools students to Taliban Camps fro Guerrilla training.

The capital (the most high alert city of Pakistan) Islamabad was taken hostage by religious extremists and the leading Daily DAWN quotes “ Move to impose talibanisation”

These are the stories of just one day. On the other hand the entire country is under heavy unrest. Two highly important and strategically sensitive provinces NWFP and Balochistan are under civil war with no control of the government because of illegitimacy of present regime.

Sindh is crying for its constitutional and legal rights. MQM and other test-tube fake, sick, fractured and frustrating political individuals like Arbab Rahim are making Sindhi nation more annoyed.

Seraiki people are   also indebted by the trap of poverty, lawlessness and access to fundamental human rights like Sindhis.

On the other front the mainstream political leadership (Benazir Bhutto Saheba and Mian Nawaz Sharif) are forcefully kept out of country and as a result the country and the people are pushing towards depoliticization.
Institutions are not functioning, governance is in its worst form, Supreme Court Chief Justice is humiliated and country has now entered into the phase of total anarchy and there is great threat of forces of Talibanisation mindset may takeover the country of millions of peaceful, democratic and secular people.

On the third hand the entire government including Musharraf are doing picnic outside country having too many unwanted tours.

Please read the below a recent report of International Crisis Group (ICG) on the Talibanisation of Pakistan.

INTERNATIONAL CRISIS GROUP - NEW REPORT
Pakistan: Karachi’s Madrasas and Violent Extremism
Islamabad/Brussels, 29 March 2007: A network of Pakistani madrasas supporting violent jihadi groups poses a significant threat to domestic, regional and international security.
Pakistan: Karachi’s Madrasas and Violent Extremism,* the latest report from the International Crisis Group, examines the negative role these religious schools continue to play five years after President Pervez Musharraf promised a full reform of the sector. Deplorable public schools, the sectarian tilt of state institutions, the marginalisation of moderate voices and military government’s reliance on religious parties for political survival have led to the growth of madrasas at an explosive rate over the past two decades. They are either unregistered or registered under laws that have no effective implementation.
“The government’s inaction has allowed well-financed networks of madrasas, sectarian parties, and militant groups to flourish in Karachi and elsewhere in Pakistan”, says Samina Ahmad Crisis Group’s South Asia Project Director. “Not all madrasas in the city are active centres of jihadi militancy, but even those without direct links to violence promote an ideology that provides religious justification for such attacks”.
Karachi’s madrasas have trained and dispatched jihadi fighters to Afghanistan and Indian-administered Kashmir, contributing to a climate of lawlessness and bitter sectarianism. In 2006, the city was rocked by high-profile acts of political violence: in three separate attacks, suicide bombers killed a U.S. diplomat, assassinated the head of the most prominent Shia political group and wiped out the entire leadership of a Sunni militant group locked in a struggle for control over mosques with its Sunni rivals.
The international community needs to press President Musharraf to fulfil his commitments, in particular to enforce genuine controls on the madrasas and allow free and fair national elections in 2007. It should also shift the focus of its donor aid from helping the government’s ineffectual efforts to reform the religious schools to improving the very weak public school sector.
“So long as the military continues to rely on the mullahs to retain power, madrasas and the violent extremism they encourage will become ever more powerful in Pakistani society, undermining the security of the state and its citizens”, says Robert Templer, Crisis Group’s Asia Program Director. “Real reform will only be possible through the strengthening of the country’s moderate parties and forces, with free and fair national elections in 2007 an essential first step”.
