Hi,

I've updated the main project page: http://simile-widgets.org/exhibit3/

See the 'Get Involved' section for ways you can follow along. Sitting
in the IRC channel or watching / forking on GitHub will get you closest
to the development side.

Good question (and sorry for the long silence). Here's an update on
where we are:

Over the past couple of months we've been in the process of refining
requirements, evaluating various code bases for both the front end and
back end services and rolling out an initial codebase that reflects
the new Exhibit 3 architecture on GitHub https://github.com/zepheira/exhibit3.
Additionally, we've put in place an continuous integration
infrastructure to help with testing/debugging/documentation that we
believe will be useful for both current implementation and future
community involvement https://ci.zepheira.com/job/test_exhibit3/.

The current plan is to have a beta release in early July and a more
polished release to share with the community in August. We'll hold an
architecture meeting in early July to nail down some of the details
for this first release, and will be posting notes from that soon
afterwards. Everyone is welcome to jump in any time, on whatever part
of it you're interested in, but for those who just want to try it out
you should plan on August for that.

Also, if folks are around and would like to talk, we'll be doing short
presentations/demonstrations of Exhibit 3 at

-- LOD-LAM summit in SF this week http://lod-lam.net/summit/
-- SemTech 2011 conference in SF next week
http://semtech2011.semanticweb.com/sessionPop.cfm?confid=62&proposalid=4130
-- Open Repositories 2011 meeting in Austin next week (session 7 at
1:30 Thursday) https://conferences.tdl.org/or/OR2011/OR2011main/schedConf/program

So if you're attending any of those meetings stop by and say hi, and
I'll announce other venues are we confirm them over the summer.

Thanks so much MacKenzie!
The links are informative and provide a nice look at what is happening.
Am very interested in the progress being made and this update is encouraging.

The beta release date has slipped to August since we spent a lot of
time on the continuous integration infrastructure, but we'll have a
better idea of the schedule by the end of this week and will share it
ASAP.

It's August. Is it done yet, is it done yet? ;-)

Kidding aside, I'm really looking forward to trying out the beta
release.

Thanks for the nudge, we're overdue for an update on the project...

There is a beta (internal) release done now, and it's available via GitHub for the curious. We've loaded some large datasets (~100,000 records) into it and so far, so good. Other things like the new APIs are still in development. We still plan to have a public release this month, but realistically towards the end of the month to get as much into it as possible. There won't be much in the way of user documentation until later in the fall, so the August release will be for early adopters with a high tolerance for reading code...

We had an architecture planning meeting in July to nail down some details, and we'll post a summary of that soon. No surprises for those who've been following the architecture plans so far, but a bit more info on things like the HTML language and related services (babel, etc.).

Thanks for your patience, and you'll see something pretty soon!

Thanks Mackenzie for the update

For non-developers is there a brief summary anywhere on Exhibit 3.0
that explains the architecture detail like what database systems you
will use / support.

Is the plan to natively support CouchDB, MongoDB and/or MySQL? Or
just to provide interfaces supporting JSON or equiv?

Many thanks if you can update / send me in the right direction.

We're working on a summary of the recent architecture meeting and will be sure to include the DB question. Expect that to be out in the next week or so... stay tuned.
