Yes, you need to create a feed.  You can find some instructions for doing so at the tail end of this tutorial: http://people.csail.mit.edu/karger/Exhibit/CAR/HandsOn/

THANK YOU BOTH!

The tutorial i was using hadn't specified flipping the web output from html to rss.  that was the problem.  and because i'm way outside my comfort zone i didn't know how to recognize it or problem solve it.

Great catch.  And great redirect.  The other Exhibit tutorial with Google output at the bottom cleared me up right quick.
