In a completely unrelated project, I've put together a frontend centric module for doing dashboards over the last 12 months or so - https://github.com/nyeholt/silverstripe-dashboards 

It's based off the WidgetArea/Widget code for the individual Dashlets - it's what's used underneath http://silvertwit.com/me/board/main/2
