I'm cross posting this on the Dev and Documentation groups. My apologies to those of you (like me) who are on both lists.

If any of you are familiar with StackOverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/), Area 51 (http://area51.stackexchange.com/faq) is a new site used to suggest and eventually go live with StackWhatever type sites.  I think a format like this will only help ease new comers barrier to entry.

Anyway, I have purposed such a site, but we need support to get it up in the running.  Please follow the link to check it out, and read the above FAQ if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Everything is free, it's done under the creative commons, I believe their revenue stream is advertising and job posting based.

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

I notice that it's been a while since your initial proposal, and that in that time it has expired!

Anyway, I've created a new proposal for the same purpose.

Thanks for re-raising this Robbie.

I'd urge other SilverStripe devs to sign up to follow this, let's se if we can get enough support to get it to the next stage.

If anyone follows this StackOverflow proposal and needs some sample questions to post...

you can also go borrow some real ones from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/silverstripe

;)

+1 Cam - we each have a 5 question/5 vote limit on the proposal, so will need a decent amount of input from over the board

Something to ask here is what is the purpose of having this space should we be successful in establishing it?

Do people feel this would be a replacement for the current forums? If so what would be a good due process in retiring these forums while not losing any of the useful knowledge people access in them everyday.

I'm happy to help make a forum strategy once I get a good understanding on where the community would like to go with this :D

Hey Cam,

There would be a crossover at this stage between the SS community forums and a StackExchange site. The strengths of the SS forum is obviously that it has a wealth of knowledge in it already, whereas the strength of a StackExchange site is that people tend to trust it more and more now because of its increasingly large number of sites, as well as the fact that it's community moderated and has voting systems etc.

Realistically, you'd probably be looking at 12-18 months or more before a SilverStripe StackExchange site graduated through to the point where it was launched out of a private beta.

An interesting comparison is the Drupal StackExchange, which runs alongside the Drupal community forums. There's a bit of a mention here in a Meta post about that: http://meta.drupal.stackexchange.com/a/380

You may find that a StackExchange Q&A site offers nothing more than the current SS community forums. You may also find that the SilverStripe SE proposal takes off by itself over the next wee while and ends up being launched anyway! After all, SE sites are community moderated, managed and driven.

Cheers,
Robbie

Hey Nicolaas,

If you Follow the proposal, that registers your interest. SE site proposals need two things to progress to the next phase: followers and questions with 10 or more up votes.

If you'd like to be involved in the process then you can contribute by reviewing the example questions that have been submitted already, commenting on how they may or may not fit into the proposed StackExchange SilverStripe site, up or down vote them depending on what you think, ask your own example questions, etc.

The process that these proposals go through is essentially to (A) get a backbone of committed users to support the site, and (B) to establish what the site's specific purpose is, which questions are on or off topic, how the site differs from other StackExchange sites like StackOverflow, etc.

Cheers,
Robbie

No worries - hope to see you on there.

I think Stack sites are strongest when they follow strict rules, for instance only allowing straightforward questions that can lead to an accepted best-case answer. When scope is broad or you want to gather different opinions, I think a forum is a better place for that. So I think a Stack site could be the go to place for SS developers to give each other technical support (I got this error, how do I fix it?), while the SS forums could be a place to discuss ideas and make announcements (guys, check out this new module!).

Sadly, this was to be expected.

I guess we'll need to gain some traction on stackoverflow first (there seems to be a very low activity on silverstripe tagged questions) before we can consider having a separate stackexchange site for SilverStripe.

Hope it'll happen sometime in the future though…

I guess you could say...the lack of exchanges was stacked against us...
