I have shared some scripts I did to save space at Digital Ocean and backup SilverStripe websites to Dropbox using zip-archives.

How fast is this option? I need about 2 minutes old statically server files. Would that work?

I haven't tested actual network speed, but it's pretty fast I guess about 1Gbit network to move files between server and 5-10MB/s uploading to dropbox compressed zip file.
