We're currently working out how to provide SS documentation to our
clients. We'd like to put the userhelp.silverstripe.org content into a
custom-built SS website that will also contain documentation specific
to the client's system. Is it possible to get a database dump or some
other import format for the userhelp.silverstripe.org content?

We'd also like to have a 20-30 page PDF document that we can provide
as a soft and hardcopy document at handover. I've noticed that this
existed for 2.3, but I can't find it for 2.4. Also I'm not clear on
the best way to produce a PDF from content on a website.

It would be ideal if this process could be automated to some extent so
that new versions can be created when the content on
userhelp.silverstripe.org is updated.

I think that having a really strong user guide will help to advance SS
into the corporate market. Any help with this would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Simon

Hmm, I think the easiest implementation for automatic download
of content would be a RESTful API. It puts a bit more complexity
in the download script on your end (following children references,
downloading image assets). We can't really build a custom download
script or PDF generation right now, everybody's tied up in SS3.

Simon, if you need stuff right now I suggest you screen scrape the website
(there's numerous tools out there, nothing SilverStripe specific).
The content is Creative Commons licensed, so allows for this.

This document was superseded by the userhelp.
If anybody is willing to look into generating a clean PDF download
from the userhelp, we could look into opensourcing the SilverStripe project
it runs on. The project is super simple, two PHP classes and a bit of styling.
There's existing PDF generator modules for SilverStripe, although
their quality is a bit poor. Before we spend the effort to opensource,
any takers for this? The assumption is that you can take it to a
sufficient quality standard that we can migrate the feature
back into userhelp.

It would be ideal if this process could be automated to some extent so
that new versions can be created when the content on
userhelp.silverstripe.org is updated.

I think that having a really strong user guide will help to advance SS
into the corporate market. Any help with this would be greatly

Thanks,

Simon

I would like to pick this up.

I have a simple PDF module, which can export simple HTML Pages to PDF documents.
It allows to set a PDF as source file, so companies could create a branded styled handover document from the online documentation.
This week the English userhelp is translated to Dutch and I will testdrive a PDF export module.

If people want to join forces, let me know.

Cheers,
Martijn

Great Martin, let us know how you go!
Can you trial this with a standard SS install,
or do you need the source code for userhelp?

I have a basic 2.4.5 setup with only Page.php for the content, a FPDI/FPDF library and a custom Socialbar module for printing, emailing, sharing, add notes, add feedback.

Attached I have the template I'm playing with and a sample PDF generated from the content (currently supports 3 levels deep) .

Needs some finetuning, but I think its not bad for blueprint/playground.

We're definitely available to help with whatever we can. We'll also be
interested in the open source code as well because there may be some
improvements that we'd like to add as well. Martijn, please feel free
to contact me via email to coordinate.

Hey Martijn, the screenshots look promising!
How does the notes feature work, is that an external service?
We've typically applied Disqus comments for this purpose,
although it needs careful moderation.

With the Notes button you can add personal notes to each page, which you van print out/email on a seperate page. The notes are stored for 14 days since last visit.

Since the target audience is the end CMS user and its not a Form/Blog, I want to add a Feedback or 'Report an error' form, rather then a comment system.
In that way pages stay clean and easy to read and important information does not get lost in the comments.

But thats how I look at it.
In fact it should look like an online published Manual (from PDF) (but in fact the opposite it true...)

Hi Simon,

Sorry, I was not very 'community active'.

I have the pdf module ready, but needs some finishing.
It exports a website to a PDF doc, but that still requires you have access to the content.

I will email you the module tomorow, so you can get started.

Cheers.

Iv also recently published some work Id done for a PDF module.
https://github.com/mattclegg/silverstripe-dompdf

It needs some tweaking to work out the box (or better documentation), but I have it working quite well on a few 'catalogue' sites.

Martijn; are you putting your code on GitHub? Or, I would love to see how you went about this if you could send it over.

Yes I will..

Still need to find some time to study github howto's...

It basicly collects all SiteTree Page Classes, generates a table of contents based on nesting structure and generate a PDF.
You can set a source PDF so you can generate a company branded handover. Needs some fintuning, but I will post it when its releasable..

Excellent, thanks Martijn. I look forward to it. I'd also like to get
the content, assets and source code of the original userhelp website.
Do you have these? Does anyone know where I can get these?

Simon - my understanding from previous requests for the Userhelp
content and assets is that you'll need to scrape it yourself from the
site.

Is there any way that someone at SilverStripe could provide the
community with a database dump and a tarball of the assets directory
from the current userhelp site? This would really save a lot of time,
and is probably a much better solution that attempting to scrape this
content into a fresh SS install. If it's covered by Creative Commons
license then I don't see why there would be any problem with this. And
I'd be happy to make sure that it gets shared with the community once
it's been provided.

Would really appreciate some help with this :)

Thanks

Oh, one more thing... Any chance you can send the sshelp theme as
well? No need to reinvent the wheel, and it's a well-suited theme to
this task.

Thanks for sending that over Will, but that's not actually what we're
after. What you sent is the content from the old 2.3 version of
userhelp (see http://2.3.userhelp.silverstripe.org/), and we need to
get the content from http://userhelp.silverstripe.org/. Also the
assets that were provided aren't the assets that are referred to in
the content.

What I'm trying to achieve is:

- Set up a SS site that has the content, theme and assets from the
current http://userhelp.silverstripe.org/
- Put this up on github so that developers can use customise this
content for their clients
- Collaborate with Martijn so that this module provides the ability to
create a PDF containing the content of this site
- This would allow us to go through and add/delete content as required
on a per-client basis, removing content that's not relevant to them,
and possibly adding new sections covering custom functionality that's
been developed for them, and then to render all of this to a PDF that
can be used as a handover document.

What I'd like to get from SilverStripe to achieve this is:

- A database dump of the content from http://userhelp.silverstripe.org/
- A copy of the assets/ directory from this site
- A copy of the themes/sshelp them from this site

Thanks!

Darn, there's an issue around downloading the database off that particular server at the moment. I'll get that resolved and will be in touch.

- Set up a SS site that has the content, theme and assets from the
current http://userhelp.silverstripe.org/
- Put this up on github so that developers can use customise this
content for their clients

Perhaps it would be an idea to migrate userhelp to markdown files (similar to doc.silverstripe.org). That would also allow developers to bundle
the userhelp with the installation of SS, 'pull' updates and not maintain a separate database.. Anyway this is longterm thinking.

Hi - I'm the project manager at SilverStripe for our open source
project and our websites.

It's definitely our desire to eventually migrate userhelp to markdown.
It's already not ideal to have two different sites for 2.3 and 2.4.
Our goal is to tie versions of userhelp to specific releases,
especially for the upcoming SS3.

If anyone in the community is keen to help us get this started, that
would be most excellent!

P.S. The ability to export all of userhelp into a PDF is also
something we'd like to make happen. (We had a downloadable document
for SS2.3, but that was a manually created and separately maintained
document - ouch. :-)

In terms of getting the content converted to Markdown, you can feed the original HTML into http://milianw.de/projects/markdownify/demo.php and apply some manual cleanup.

Any luck with getting that content, assets and theme yet?

Sorry to keep hassling you guys but I really need to get that content,
I've got a client on my back every day about it.

Sorry, but I really think that you could easily copypasted the content from userhelp.org already..

That would take maybe 20 minutes to copy, 5 minutes to install Silverstripe and 10 minutes to implement the pdf module I send you....

Cheers,
Martijn

Really would like to stop bugging you guys, so I've included a simple
script that will create a tarball with the database dump and content
that we require. See below.

I agree that I could have copypasted the content, but downloading all
of the assets would have taken quite some time. Also I'd like to re-
use the sshelp theme as well.

#!/bin/bash

WEBROOT="..."
DB_HOSTNAME="..."
DB_USERNAME="..."
DB_PASSWORD="..."
DB_NAME="..."

cd $WEBROOT
mysqldump --host="$DB_HOSTNAME" --user="$DB_USERNAME" --
password="$DB_PASSWORD" $DB_NAME | gzip > dump.sql.gz
tar czf userhelp.tar.gz dump.sql.gz assets/ themes/sshelp themes/
ssorgsites
echo "Thanks!! Now send userhelp.tar.gz to simon...@gmail.com.
Cheers!"

Hrm, well that's weird, the message I posted disappeared.

Anyway, this should give you what you need:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7129062/sshelp-assets.tar.gz
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7129062/sshelp-db.tar.gz
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7129062/sshelp-theme.tar.gz

Thanks a lot Sam, appreciate your help. However, the sshelp-db.tar.gz
file isn't on Dropbox any more, it's returning 404. Can you please
resend.

Once we've got that we'll get in touch when we've got it working.

Hi guys,

The link doesn't seem to work anymore.

Is this file still available? (It was a PDF of the whole sshelp site)

Matt
