I ran a tournament using USI interface Shogidokoro with LesserKai and
Laramie V3. Ponder was set to 'ON' so that the engines were thinking
on the opponent's time.

Having the source to LesserKai, I made two simple changes:
1. I did a 64 bit compile so the performance was increased (I have a
64 bit OS).
2. I allowed default depth of 9 plies (originally depth is set to 4
plies).

Laramie won all of the games, but LesserKai did manage to last for a
long time on some games.

I would be interested to hear expert comments about the quality of the
games.
I also intend to write a USI interface for Bonanza, so that it can
easily be added to tournaments of this nature.
There is a {non-usi} 64-bit Windows build of Bonanza here:
http://cap.connx.com/chess-engines/new-approach/bonanza.zip
It is fairly large (50 MB) because it contains database information
also, and not just binaries and code.

if both engines are running at the same machine, ponder didn't make
much sense. You must take care, that both engines get the same CPU
power. In this case I would suggest to play without ponder.
(Of have you used two computers?)

Being "close to a win" and really winning is much different.
For example, if you have a long time-limit (many hours) and one
program uses the whole time for the first few moves, it should be
obviously, that this engine can result an advantage in the opening but
misses because of to less time in the end.

Or maybe more realistic (=>question goes to engine programmers): if
the engine have NO tsume-solver, this engine can use more time for
strategical analysis, but rarely find mating moves. Such an engine
will be play good in middle game, but without tsume-solver have not
really a chance to win.

Such an interface is already available for a long time and it's name
is u2b.
(Look here for all USI engines at the moment:
http://www.geocities.jp/shogidokoro/enginelink.html)

But still, u2b is not fully suporting complete USI, so it wouldn't be
an useless idea to write such a program you told.
But in this case I would suggest not to control Bonanza.exe, but
control sikou.dll instead. In this way you would be able to use a few
more engines (like Usapyon) which are also available with sikou.dll

For game analysis, one other has to answer.

I have 4 CPUs on this computer.

Shogidokoro.

Thanks for the hint. Of course, I will make the source public so that
it can be used with any engine.

I see also that LesserKai has a USI interface. Perhaps I can fold in
the USI interface from LesserKai into the Sikou.dll file from Bonanza.

Hi,

with respect to the Usapyon "sikou.dll" I also noticed that the

> TTC_SetStrengthLevel
> TTC_sikou
> TTC_sikou_end
> TTC_sikou_ini

functions are not being exported in the binary version I received with
my Usapyon Windows release, but they are part of the sources.

Just compile the DLL from the source code provided and compare it to
the binary release for another surprise: the memory footprint is quite
different (checked with dumpbin).

Fred

By the way, I forgott to say the following:

This is more widely used at floodgate:
http://wdoor.c.u-tokyo.ac.jp/shogi/
(unofficial shogi server for computer programs)

For a playlist, use this link:
http://wdoor.c.u-tokyo.ac.jp/shogi/LATEST/players-floodgate14.html

This Server didn't use USI, but Shogidokoro supports USI and can
connect to floodgate.
(By the way: BCMShogi can do the same, but still not comfortable.)

The entire shogi server is that one tiny ruby file? That's amazing.
Maybe I'll have to learn ruby.

Good idea.

Than you can improve it and make a server useable for human also, with
als the nice features the server for chess, go, ... have. ;-)

My next priority is to get Bonanza working natively with USI.

Or maybe you likte to implement USI to the current computer shogi
champion GPS-Shogi first?

GPS-Shogi is hard to build and understand.
Bonanza is much easier to work with.

I have the source code for both.

That's sad for two reasons:
1) Bonanza is already useable with USI. (I like more and more USI-
engines, same situation as in westen chess)
2) GPSShogi is the current world champion. ;-)

If so, the links are here:

You can download GPS shogi binary that runs on relatively new Linux.
There's gpsusi binary included that speaks USI protocol. Dunno how
complete the support is, though.

Oh, very nice. I haven't recognized that.

Is there somebody who is able to compile gpsshogi for windows (maybe
with Cygwin)???

Would be very nice.

not with cygwin.
Cygwin is unix ported to windows. Programs should be able to compile
without any/many changes.
I've tried it with a few programs and it was working.

(Of course) I also tryed GPS shogi, but without a fast success. It
seems that I would have to install missed libraries (also in Cygwin
available). I searched (and found) one and installed it, but that was
not all. Installing ALL (!!!) packets of cygwin will be too much (and
too long) for me.
I don't have the time for this work.

Oh, and GPS shogi (USI) is working with stdin/stdout, this makes
porint also much easier, than some GUI stuff.

yes.
For Shogidokoro you need (same like for BCMShogi ;-) ) an engine
supporting USI.
As Yoshiki said, there exists gpsusi.

Unfortunately this windows binary (gpsusi) is not working successfully
at the moment and the downloadlinks were removed. But they are working
to solve the problem.
There were also an other windows binary version (gpsshogi) which
supports the GNUShogi- and CSA-protocoll. This seems working.

By the way: there is one more new USI-Engine available!

checked it myself. ;-)

There are 182 players with 7Dan (SC24 rating above 2800).
I don't believe, that the computers are such strong at the moment.

Maybe someone (Daniel? ;-) ) like to compare the SC24 ratings with
the Floodgate ratings to be able to compare them??? ;-)

I estimated GPSShogi on sc24. Bonanza on Floodgate is 2427. Bonanza on
SC24 is 2640. The difference is 213 points. So to go from floodgate to
sc24 add 213 points. GPS is 2636 on floodgate. So add 213 to 2636
gives 2849 the estimate of the gps rating on sc24. That would rank 91
on sc24.

Hi,

GPSShogi seems working very well for windows, now: I've lost 3 (of 3)
games, having 2 piece handicap ;-)
(Against Bonanza I can win with such handicap!!!)

It's still in developing-test-phase, but I'm sure, not for a long
time.

Thanks to the GPS-Team - superb work.
And congratulation for the win of the title of WCSC!!!

So there are 8 USI-Engines !!!

I am sure Bernard understands this, but I think only the GPS team itself
should play the program on Shogi Club 24. So far, they have been
reluctant to do so and this is quite understandable. Most human players
don't like to play computers on the Internet. Those programs who have
been playing on the internet have only been there for a very short time
(YSS plays 50 games on SC24 every year) with a handle name clearly
indicating that it was a computer so that people who don't like
computers can avoid playing them. Also, GPS is a program made at the
prestigious University of Tokyo, which means that they have to be extra
careful not to create any problems.

I understand the desire to know how strong computers are against human
players, but only the programmers can make the decision to play at SC24.
I am sure YSS will play there again this year and this will be good
indication. Last year YSS had a rating of 2744 on SC24:

http://www32.ocn.ne.jp/~yss/24rating.html

Considering it was improved and still got clobbered in the CSA
tournament this year, I am sure that GPS is well over 2800.

I think so, too.
At least they should be asked for permissions.

Also I completely agree.
On a german (western) chess-server where I've played a long time ago,
all computer accounts were marked with a "(C)"!

> Considering it was improved and still got clobbered in the CSA

I hadn't much time for testing, but GPS also plays very well in
handicap games.

Speaking for example about 2-piece-handicap:
Bonanza always makes Anaguma, keeping 3 generals for defense, which
makes me able
to control the rest of the board and finaly attack the king and win.
But GPS Shogi seems to attack more strongly and make preassure with
(almost) all
his generals.

But maybe I have to play more games to find my "special" stretegy
against this engine.
I remember playing against Bonanza, when I also need some time for it.

I wish someone would make a (small) handicap opening book for GPS to
get more
various play.

I agree anyone who wants to use gps on sc24 should ask the gps team
for permission because it is their property. I hope the gps team would
test gps on sc24 because they would know best how to get the maximum
performance from gps. Or give someone permission to test it on sc24.
Of course gps should use computer or software in its name or location
so there is no mistake that a computer is playing.

I don’t see any of the top 8 programs on sc24 this year. Having YSS
and other strong programs test on sc24 would be interesting. But that
would not tell us how strong is gps. Gps is over 250 points higher
than YSS on floodgate. My previous estimate for gps was too low. I
think gps would rank in the top 30 on sc24.

if the computers don't like to play against humans, the humans must
play against the computers!

Don't understand? ;-)

If the computers don't like to play at sc24, the humans must play at
floodgate.
If people realy like to play against (the best) shogi engines, they
can do it on floodgate (but in an very uncomfortable way - at least at
the moment).

Here you can see my first tests - with some stupid bugs: "illegal

But maybe "my" games had made gps such strong. ;-)

Good idea to get people to play at floodgate. But how will you get
the people to come to floodgate?

Computers complain all the time they don’t like to play humans.
Computers say humans don’t really play shogi because they use
psychology, intuition and experience instead of creating move trees.
They say humans play too slow. In the time it takes to play 1 human
game 2 computers can play 10 games. I think that as computers get
stronger they won’t mind playing humans. Soon it will be the humans
not wanting to play the stronger computers. :-)

Hi,

>   Good idea to get people to play at floodgate. But how will you get
> the people to come to floodgate?

people will come, if you have a powerfull shogi-server with many
functions, userfriendly design and usability.
(As it is available for example for the game Go.)

>   Computers complain all the time they don’t like to play humans.

Computers are "stupid" and have no real brain to complain
anything. ;-)

> Computers say humans don’t really play shogi because they use
> psychology, intuition and experience instead of creating move trees.

Playing computers against other computers would be nice, fun,
interesting, maybe sport and so on.
But you can not earn (much) mony with it.

Compuer-only-tournaments are good to improve the enginges and also
good for advertising, that you have a strong machine.
But to earn money, the programs are sold to HUMANS !!!
So if humans play in this way, it would be a good idea to make the
computer engines more "humanlike" and make them seem playing by
psychology, intuition, ...
Also in chess-programming there are such ideas, so for example the
computer not always will play the theoretically best move, but also by
other aspects.

> They say humans play too slow. In the time it takes to play 1 human
> game 2 computers can play 10 games.

As written above: the engine programers should be happy if humans like
to play against there engines.
This will help to improve the playing strength AND (!!!) improve the
playing style!!!

> I think that as computers get
> stronger they won’t mind playing humans. Soon it will be the humans
> not wanting to play the stronger computers.  :-)

I belive most humans won't play against computers, wheather they play
weak or strong.

Also as written above: the playing STYLE of computers are not nice.

So if someone will make a big step and earn money in selling a shogi
engine/program, he/she should think about make the program more
humanlike playing.

To make floodgate powerful with many functions and user friendly will
take a lot of work. It is easier to have the computers play on sc24.

People want a shogi program with a user friendly interface, many
functions and the strongest player. If the computer is too strong
there are easy ways to lower the level. Adding a handicap, decreasing
the computer’s time or limiting the number of moves to look ahead. I
don’t think style is as important as strength. Some people like to
play and win. It does not matter with man or computer. Other people
like the computer for training and analysis.

The programmers improve their programs faster by playing games against
other programs. The more games you play the faster your program
improves. If 1 program plays 3 programs 100s of games continuously day
and night then the programmer can quickly test changes and see which
parts need improving. He can also keep his improvements secret.
Playing people is a slow way to improve programs.

As the interface gets better and computers get stronger and databases
of games get bigger then all players will use computers for playing or
for training. In chess, today no player wants to play a computer in a
tournament but every player uses his computer at home.

People want to play a specific opening. The computer can be restricted
to play a specific opening. The style can be aggressive or passive.
Other styles maybe short term tactics or long term strategy. But I
don’t think there is a specific human style. Some people used the term
computer move but they really mean bad move. Or if a computer
sacrifices a piece that is a human move. What they really mean is a
computer that plays well and wins is playing human style.

7 dan is very strong.
And comparing to the last years, this would be a big step.
But it seems, GPS-Shogi realy made a very big step.

Knowing (something) about programming western chess and "feeling" the
difficulties in making shogi engines, I'm wondering about the strength
of shogi programs, not possible with only western chess code.

But if computer-shogi will continue growing so fast, then the "human
crown" can be reached.

Also this big success let me think about the possibility of creating
strong go programs, but in this game, I can't believe that this can
happen during my livetime.
Still the strongest Go-program is stronger than me:

7 dan is strong. But you know YSS was 2744, close to 7 dan in 2007.
So in 2 years for yss to improve 100 points is a small achievement.

The problem is we have very little to base this guess. Why are none
of the top 8 programs on sc24?
I would think the programmers want to show their program is the first
to reach 2800. I imagine more than 1 program is past 2800.

The milestone of being number 1 on sc24 will pass quickly without
anyone trying to grab it. Why is that?

I notice that go programs are steadily improving but at a slower rate
than shogi programs probably because go is harder.

I already start regretting adding this comment to my CSA report. The
rating of GPS Shogi remains unknown as does the rating of all the other
current versions of the programs. The estimate of the strength of GPS
Shogi I made in my report was actually based on the discussion here on
Shogi-L (we have a snake biting his own tail here).

The rating of the best shogi programs has not been a topic among
programmers here in Japan and surprising as it may seem to us
Westerners, it seems nobody is very much interested in putting his
program on Shogi Club 24. I suspect Yamashita will play YSS again for 50
games sometime soon, but that is probably all the information we are

The first program to pass number 50, 100 or even 200 on the shogi
club 24 will be a milestone. These breakthroughs will happen only
once. This is bigger than winning a computer tournament. A computer
tournament is won every year. A rating from the shogi club 24 is an
objective measure of program strength. Winning a computer tournament
does not give a rating.
