I have a simple app that renders results for text and part of a dataframe  (mlgi.shinyspps.io/protest/). I am trying to publish all the rows after selecting key columns.  When I use the shiny library everything works as expected. However once I use the shinyapp library the rendering of the main panel slows down dramatically . This is the case whether I am using a local version of the software or the alpha version on shinapps.io. version. In the latter instance it is not unusual for nothing at all to appear in the mainpanel. Is this a general problem or am I doing something unwise? (The table has dimensions of 473 X 10).

It sounds like you are hitting an issue with Shinyapps.io that we need to dig into.
If the application works perfectly well locally for you, then it should perform no less well on our servers.

I tried clicking on the link you provided but it is not responding correctly for me.

Sorry I mispoke in my original post. The system works fine locally, the problem is as you described.

Michael,

I believe this is UTF-8 encoding problem. If I check the javascript console when I load your app I see:

  1. Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token N shiny.js:764
    1. dispatchMessageshiny.js:764
    2. socket.onmessageshiny.js:491
    3. d.dispatchEventsockjs-0.3.min.js:27
    4. y._dispatchMessagesockjs-0.3.min.js:27
    5. e.ws.onmessage

If I recall correctly, this can be caused by the fact that ShinyApps by default is not using a UTF-8 encoding, and your app is attempting to read UTF-8 encoded data.

This is obviously an issue with ShinyApps that we need to fix. However the work around right now is to add a file to your application called ".Renviron". That file should have the text:

LANG="C.UTF-8"
