So I am busy getting our software onto 50 new U8180 phones we have
bought, and in the process found that some of them won't root using
GingerBreak-1.20.

Some of the ones that wouldn't root have a slightly different baseband
version, but not of the actual OS, but some claim to have exactly the
same version.

I am now trying to put a stock rom on these phones so that I can try
rooting from that, in the hope that it is an old enough rom to be
vulnerable to GingerBreak.

The instructions require putting a special big file (UPDATA.APP) (an
official Optus firmware image for the U8180) into a special place on
the sdcard (/sdcard/dload/UPDATA.APP). That bit was easy.

The next bit said to hold power, volume-up and the red button. This
is tricky, since there is no red button on the U8180 / IDEOS X1 /
IDEOS Gaga.

However, it turns out that holding volume-up and volume-down while
turning the phone on does the trick.

It then goes through the firmware update process (allow a few minutes).

It then roots fine with GingerBreak-1.20. This is helpful, to say the least.

We will put the UPDATA.APP file up on
developer.servalproject.org/files as U8180-UPDATA.APP in case anyone
needs it.

Paul.

Yo,

Lovely. That's going to make for a much less irritating day tomorrow!

Cheers,

Hi All,

Just to further the conversation on this.

The U8180 phone I got from my local Optus store yesterday was refusing
to root with GingerBreak-1.20. Applying the update that Paul uploaded
[1] solved the issue.

For completeness I've attached a screen capture showing the About
Software screen before and after the update. The only noticeable
difference on this screen is the build number.

Other things I've noticed is a change in the icons in the application
drawer. As my main interest in the phone is for development I didn't
take that much notice before flashing it.

As GingerBreak is technically using a software exploit to achieve our
desired result, the installation of the su binary, it is possible that
in the more recent builds of the ROM the exploit has been fixed.

Hope this helps.

-Corey

Yo,

Interesting. It'd never occurred to me that these aren't actually running Gingerbread. Android 2.2.2 = Froyo.

Cheers,

Hi,

Apparently the GingerBreak APK uses this exploit:

http://c-skills.blogspot.com/2011/04/yummy-yummy-gingerbreak.html

Which may or may not work for Android 2.2.2.

Luckily for us it does happen to work for many of our devices.

Hi,

It is unfortunate that flashing a ROM has changed the baseband and has
stopped your 3G connection from working.

Unfortunately this type of thing is possible when flashing ROMs on a device.

My only suggestion at this point is to see if there is a ROM available
from one of the Android developer forums for your device in your
locality.

Alternatively you may want to try the CyanogenMod 7 port for the u8180 [1].

We've had success here in the lab with a CyanogenMod ROM on the u8180
devices we've used here for testing, unfortunately I don't know if the
CyanogenMod ROM will update the baseband.

I've CC'd the developer list in my reply, where you first saw my post,
in the hopes that someone else on the list may be able to offer some
insight.

Hope this helps.
