There is only one week left to sign up for the World Bank's free online course "The Future of Work: Preparing for Disruption"! Will you be one of the participants earning a World Bank certificate?

Starting on Monday, August 19, this course focuses on understanding the new technologies and business models that will reshape the landscape of future workforce. With the analysis of these transformation and consideration on how government can best respond, participants are introduced to the World Bank's new human capital index, highlighting the links between investments in health and education and the productivity of future workers. Key themes of the course include the impacts on work of artificial intelligence, the gig economy, new technologies, digital economy, machine learning, the role of policy makers, the labor market, and the labor force. On top of that, the course emphasizes the impact on early education and post-school skill development. It also proposes the new social contracts to provide for larger investments in human capital and more universal social protection programs.

While the course is in English, course videos include captions and transcripts in the five other World Bank languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, and Russian.

Course Syllabus
The Future of Work – Preparing for Disruption

Week 1 - Changing Nature of Work
• Understand the factors at play in a changing workforce and workplace
• Introduction to new technologies that transform day-to-day life
• Lay out effect on labor market
Learning outcome: Describe and discuss the issues and challenges today’s workers face.

Week 2 – Human Capital: A New Framework
• Introduction to the World Bank’s new human capital index
• Understand the link between investments and productivity
• Explore evolving economic opportunity and the development of individual capacity
Learning outcome: Describe and discuss the importance of skills development and the pros and cons of informal sectors.

Week 3 – Lifelong Learning: From Birth to Retirement
• Introduction to the importance of early child development for future productivity
• Explore programs from pre-natal care to youth employment
• Understanding the role of education in preparing the future workforce
Learning outcome: Describe and discuss the links between education, health and nutrition on the one hand and learning and economic productivity on the other.

Week 4 – Returns to Work & Social Protection
• Examine the lifelong learning approach for today’s workers
• Explore breakthrough social programs
• Understand pedagogy, technology platforms and links between industry and schools
Learning outcome: Describe and discuss the what is needed for a lifelong learning approach, and understand the importance of a decrease of informality in the economy, removal of blockages to women in the workplace, and enhancement of training for agricultural workers.

Week 5 – Investing in Social Inclusion
• Explore the new social contract required for the Future of Work
• Introduction to new ways of protecting people
• Understand methods for financing of social programs
Learning outcome: Describe and discuss methods to protect people in a transformed work environment while explaining how to finance these programs.
