Slicing doughnuts

Hello net.people,

The problem is simple. How many pieces can I get when I slice
a doughnut with three planar cuts? Of course, crumbs don't
count. :-)

Actually, I don't necessarily need an answer, I'd just like to
know if there are any references to this problem in some publication
or what not.

I believe one of Martin Gardener's books mentions this problem.

One of Martin Gardner's mathematical puzzle books deals with this problem
extensively, but for the ideal doughnut and real life.
