Hi everyone,

Wondering what y’all are doing to foster outdoor education/school garden/nutrition education through distance learning either taught virtually by educators or activities that parents can do with their kids?

I know many of you are heroically taking your lessons online: how are you doing that? What are you using?

And some of you are sharing resources that parents/caregives can do themselves with their kids. What are you sharing?

Or if you’ve seen other resources, would love to know about them-thank you!

Stay safe and well,

Tristana

Hey Tristana and all-
We’ve seen a more than 200% jump for our Garden actives pages, more for families and parents as depending on district and age, home schooling bars are understandably low.

We just created a new page to launch tomorrow that aggregates by audience info on the web including SGSO and our peers - our theme is Never Stop Growing.

Will share link tomorrow . . .

Be well all.    What we all do is more important than ever.

HI Tristana.  I am honing my video skills and making weekly short videos of the garden so the students have a connection to the school garden, chickens, meadow and composting area.  We usually start off each garden class with a grazing menu so continuing that to remind them of what's in season.  There is a chicken check-in so they can see the girls and "dude" the rooster.  There is a short garden lesson, depending on the grade, and then ending with an outdoor activity.  This week I filmed my backyard and we looked for trees and shrubs sending out flowers, leaves or both.  I can't wait for the kids to explore their own backyards from a new perspective.

Hi everyone,

Tristana, thanks so much for starting this thread!

At FoodCorps we've developed this COVID-19 Resources page to support educators, parents, school nutrition professionals and others interested. On that page you'll find a link to this FoodCorps Resources To Support Remote Education document.  This document includes 35 food and garden-focused FoodCorps Lessons that can easily be adapted to lead in a home kitchen or backyard garden. The lessons are aimed for Kindergarten- 5th grade. They are a part of our suite of nearly 100 FoodCorps lessons that are currently being revised and updated, which will be posted on our website this summer.

People can also access the Sprout Scouts Club Handbook on our standard resources page, which includes hands-on activities for elementary aged kids that focus on growing, preparing and eating healthy good (developed in partnership with Life Lab!)

Our service members across the country have been engaged in a variety of activities as schools have closed, which may include supporting food distribution, remote education and school gardens. They are also recording and posting videos that feature demonstrations of easy garden and cooking activities.

Stay well everyone and take good care.

Wow! So many rad resources. Thank you all for sharing, and thank you for posing this pertinent question. I'm sharing our collective Google doc we've greeted for the BUSD Gardening and Cooking Program here. This compiles our lessons, as well as lessons shared by our community, and organizes them by grade cluster, theme, and academic standards. It's a working document, so please keep that in mind. Our garden-based learning lessons on our website are also free for viewing and download to the public (hyperlinked below). We'll be evolving and adding to this list as we learn more about how our classroom teachers are providing distance learning to our Berkeley Unified Schools.

Be well and safe!

Good morning from the Edible Schoolyard Kern County in Bakersfield CA!

We just launched our YouTube Channel yesterday. A majority of our content will be based on our curriculum, for parents to implement at home, and a few fun videos for kids to enjoy!

It's definitely a learning experience for us. I hope everyone else who is going virtual is hanging in there, transitioning from farmers and chefs to YouTube stars can be a learning curve.

Best Wishes,

Good afternoon!

My name is Chelsea Lathrop, I am the Events and Virtual Academy Coordinator at Green Our Planet. Green Our Planet is a 501(c)3 non-profit based in Las Vegas, NV and creators of the nation's largest comprehensive garden and hydroponics program. With school out here in Las Vegas indefinitely, we have been working hard to create The Green Our Planet Virtual Academy for students to connect with our horticulturists, hydroponic experts and chef-nutritionists so they can learn science, engineering and nutrition from their homes.

We believe that what our farmers, chefs and hydroponic experts can offer to serve students, families and communities is even more important now during the pandemic. During this time of increased stress and uncertainty watching one of our farmers show the lifecycle of a ladybug in the garden truly brings a sense of wonder, awe and joy to everyone in the family.  Also, I know our students will be excited to connect with the familiar faces of their farmers, chefs and hydroponics teachers who they normally see in school.

Our plan over the next few weeks is to ramp up the newsletter.  Build a solid inventory of films from our farmers who are still out tending gardens and sharing the harvests with families in need.  Also, our chefs are converting their home kitchens into mini-studios to teach cooking lessons and our hydroponics team is busy figuring out lessons so that students can make homemade hydroponic kits to grow food in their kitchen or bedroom.

If you have any questions or would like more information feel free to email me. We are also open to guest appearances in our newsletter focusing on Hydroponics, STEM curriculum, nutritional demos, etc. Take care and stay safe!

Best wishes,

Chelsea

Now that our school is out, I’ve been posting updates from our garden and videos on soil testing, photosynthesis, our seedlings and how to transplant all the plants that the student planted.

Here’s one of the videos: https://youtu.be/hcCwyyuMX8o

At my school,Mannsdale Upper Elementary, we have a Junior Master Gardener Program that is integrated into our curriculum.
All students will have an opportunity to learn how to take care of our garden within each state it’s in. Student only go to the garden once a week during our 4-week rotation blocks on Thursdays.

While learning how to provide for plants’ needs, students will also learn how plants provide for our needs. The lessons will use math, science, language arts, health, and social studies concepts to help the students understand how plants help us live, grow, learn, and play.

The Mannsdale Upper Elementary Junior Master Gardener program covers the following topics:

• Plant Growth and Development,
• Soils and Water,
• Ecology and Environmental Horticulture,
• Insects and Diseases,
• Landscape Horticulture
• Fruits and Nuts
• Vegetables and Herbs
• Life Skills and
• Career Exploration.

Greetings,

Here is what the folks at South Whidbey School Farms are doing to communicate and connect with their students. Sent from Cary Peterson

Just want to share what we are doing for our school farm program, and garden science curriculum. When school was open, we taught 650 students weekly at our School Farms here on South Whidbey. Now, in addition to google classroom weekly classes for all the grades, we are doing youtube videos and growing starts for the students to grow at home in gardens or containers.

Hi everyone,

Thought I would revive this thread to share a few more resources that FoodCorps has developed over the last few weeks.

In addition to our Resources to Support Remote Education document we have now developed a Video Lessons by FoodCorps Service Members resource where you can view over 100 videos (so far!) demonstrating food and garden education lessons, developed by our service corps across the country.

We've also developed this FoodCorps Recording Videos FAQ resource might be interest to others that are recording videos to support remote garden learning during COVID.  This resource includes links to the following two webinars developed by our Rochelli Li, FoodCorps Digital Content Manager:
  • “Lights, Camera, Action: Tips and Tricks for Recording Videos”
  • “Tips for Editing and Sharing Videos

Hello all!
We, at The HEAL Project in Half Moon Bay, CA have made distance learning videos all around the topic of composting and recycling. We are also looking to partner with local environmental education organizations to push forward some more distance learning video lessons and materials.

Hope this helps someone out there!

Thank you, Sam, for starting this thread back up!

At the Edible Schoolyard Project, we continued to create new lessons for distance learning, all of which can be seen here. (Katie, I saw in your email that you've been using these lessons. I hope they have been  helpful!)

Additionally, we hosted a series of training webinars meant to support teachers wanting to include food education in their distance learning plans. Recordings of the webinars can be seen here.

I hope this is helpful, please let me know if I can answer any questions about these resources.

Warmly,

Russell

Hey All,

I am offering my services virtually for homeschool as well as in private one-on-one tutoring with students.  For virtual education, I create slideshows and share the screen so that students can be engaged instead of just seeing me talk on a video.  I can provide topics on gardening, nutrition, environmental science etc.  I am based in California.
