Rahman: I’m glad to hear that, then. If you do ever want to do a shift again at tactical... ::grins:: ...for old time’s sake or you just had a bad day and want to shoot something, just let me know.

::She dropped the smile, just then, her voice more serious.::

Rahman: But don’t of course. Shoot anything without authorization. The PADDwork is a real #$@#%.

Greyson: Truthfully? If you need me behind a tactical console, I could do it. I’d rather be in the engine room making sure you had warp drive after it’d been shot to pieces by whatever we were chasing.

Rahman: ::nods:: All right. So what about your future then in engineering. You have ambitions of being chief one day?

Greyson: Me? Ambitious? Nah…. ::He glanced down at his pie for just a moment then returned his gaze to her.:: Being acting chief in the short duration that I was didn’t teach me what it meant to be a chief. One day, perhaps. Maybe you have a few pointers?

Rahman: Like anything else, don’t expect leadership to be something you get right on the first try. It takes practice, like any other skill. Sure, you can read books, attend workshops and seminars, but as you advance through your career, you’ll begin to find and develop your own command style.

::He nodded and dimly recalled his conversation with Chythar only a few months ago when he returned Devlin about being told he needed the opportunity to constantly improve himself. In order to do that, of course, he needed to practice what he needed to learn.::

Greyson: Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking to replace Lt. Ryan in the near future. Just want to be prepared for when I get there, if that makes sense. I asked you when you promoted me whether it’d make up for a class I was taking, and then never actually got the experience while in that position because of the swift transfer to the Columbia.

Rahman: I can understand that. So it sounds like you could use more practice then.

::A job offer? Him? Well, he hadn’t gotten the chance to do much chiefing or even acting chiefing during his very super-brief tenure.::

Greyson: Is that a hint?

Rahman: Well, how would you feel about being assistant chief engineer?

Greyson: Assistant chief. ::He paused for a moment and processed that.:: Wow.

Rahman: The job’s yours if you think you can handle it. I found it very helpful when I served in that position aboard the Pioneer. Besides learning more from Lt. Ryan directly, you get a chance to serve as the head of the shift when she’s not on duty. It’ll definitely be more work, but you’ll also be able to get a taste of command. See if it’s what you really want down the line.

::He smiled softly and finished off the last of his pie, a somewhat bemused smirk on his face.::

Greyson: Today’s been a good day.

Rahman: Hmmmph.

::Was it something he said? He raised an inquisitive eyebrow to her.::

Greyson: What’s wrong, Your Majesty?

::She leaned back, smiling again.::

Rahman: Well, maybe you should be the one giving me pointers. You managed to get pie and a promotion out of one meal with your captain.

Greyson: Regarding the pie, you did say you just wanted to enjoy the coffee. ::chuckled:: Just wait til this half-a-pip turns into a gold one. Might be able to advise you better then.

Rahman: Noted. ::She crossed her arms.:: Just don’t expect it to be as easy as… well, ::She nodded toward what he was happily enjoying.:: ...you know what.
