OOC: Takes place after Lael’s “Hail Mary”

((Phaser Range, USS Veritas))

::Lael lowered her phaser as she struck her last target, glancing down at the PADD in her hand as she waited for the statistics from her last round to load. When they did, she grimaced. Just below passing. She was a bit rusty, having not been in a true firefight in a while and there was no way she was going to pass the upcoming certification with these results. She was gearing up for another round when she heard the doors open and she turned.::

:: Chythar crossed the threshold and picked up a phaser. He was clad in a t-shirt and jeans, not at all looking professional. Then again, this was down time and he still had a bit of time before the recertification came up. ::

Skyfire: Hi.

Rosek: ::grins:: You know, you really shouldn’t sneak up on people around here. Could get you shot.

Skyfire: Was ah bein’ sneaky?

Rosek: ::lowers her phaser and shrugs, grinning:: Not really, I suppose. I guess I’m just a bit jumpy. Sleep wasn’t kind to me last night.

:: He bit his lip. Whether that was his fault or not, he couldn’t say. It wasn’t really kind to him either, but he was here. ::

Skyfire: You wanted to see me shoot, right?

Rosek: ::grins:: We should probably both get in some practice if we’re going to qualify with hand weapons again, right? If you’re looking for a tutor, I’d make a lousy one. I’m just below the qualifying score myself. Your best bet would probably be Anjar. He’s helping Dassa.

:: CD wandered over to the next lane and raised his weapon, taking a breath to steady his aim. It had been a while, but after a calm exhalation or two he fired with confidence. The sort that comes with confidence in your skills. He hit the targets, fairly close to the mark. Not bulls-eye, but close to it. ::

Skyfire: A bit rusty, but not bad…

Rosek: ::grins:: Better than my score. ::gaze drops to the PADD in her hands:: I’m not a big fan of phasers. Too easy to kill someone with them. I only carry one because the thought of my team getting killed because I didn’t do what I was obligated to do...

:: He didn’t want to have that conversation again. He set down the weapon and narrowed his eyes at her. ::

Skyfire: Dinnae start that conversation with me...We ain’t goin’ through it again.

Rosek: ::arches an eyebrow:: You had one in the auditorium. Does this mean that you’ll be carrying one regularly from now on?

:: His eyes narrowed again, the memory rising to the surface. His free hand clenched into a fist from tension, and it took a great deal of willpower to maintain the calm he used to reply with. ::

Skyfire: Not going through it again...

Rosek: ::sighs:: Set it up again and I’ll see if I can actually get a passing score.

:: CD nodded in agreement and did as he was asked, setting up the targets and taking a step back to give her space. ::

::Lael exhaled as she prepared for another round of practice. She pushed all thoughts from her mind except her target, her gaze narrowed as she focused, firing off the first shot. Two minutes later, she was again staring at the PADD as she waited for the results. A satisfied grin crossed her lips as she noted the score. Two points above passing, but still...an improvement.::

Rosek: ::grins:: Looks like you're my good luck charm. Too bad I can't have you with me when I'm taking the test.

Skyfire: Well. Ah’m no coach, really...but...don’t jerk the trigger.

Rosek: ::grimaces:: Knives and hand-to-hand I can do. But energy weapons… ::shivers:: Ever since our time Over There I like them less than I did before.

:: He nodded slightly and leaned back against the wall. Chythar hated the idea of even wielding a phaser…mostly because weapons weren’t his cup of tea. ::

Rosek: I don't suppose Dassa ever convinced you to at least carry a knife or something? I know you hate weapons, but when someone else is depending on you to watch their back in a fight...in my opinion, it's selfish to let them risk their neck for you, but you aren't willing to do the same for them. If they get killed because you wouldn't cover them…
