[V-CRR] Lieutenant Commander Lael Rosek: That's Half The Fun

::She’d been here a few times over the last several months, though she had to admit, it was the first time she was here in a leadership capacity. Her and Mint’s work had been fruitful, their conclusions offering her a rare opportunity to approach the Captain with a project that could mean a significant change in how they operated in the Shoals...or at the very least, increase the efficiency of their operations here.::
::It was an exciting possibility. Her adjustment to life in the Shoals had been difficult due to the issues that often plagued the ship’s systems--issues that she hadn’t encountered quite like this before coming to the Shoals. The research into the Romulan element could mean increased functionality, decreased blackouts, and fewer malfunctions. Exhaling shakily, she pressed her thumb to the doorchime.::
Rahman: Come in.
::Lael stepped inside to find the Kriosian woman studying her monitor, which she assumed held reports from their most recent mission. She’d submitted her AAR electronically this time, not needing it as an excuse to stop by. The PADD she held in her hand contained a proposal with what they knew about the Romulan element and what she believed they would be able to do with an isotope. It was a huge breakthrough, especially out here in the Shoals.::
Rosek: ::smiles:: Captain. A pleasure, as always.
::She strode toward the Captain’s desk when she saw the woman put her mug down and give her complete attention.::
Rahman: Ah, Commander. What can I do for you?
Rosek: ::offers her the PADD:: My team was assigned to look into the containment box and we found out some very interesting things about it. In particular, that it is composed of a rare Romulan element that shields against tetryon radiation, a common problem for us here in the Shoals.
::She hadn’t been this excited about a project since she and Alex had started working on ways to improve the domes on Antor II. Their original plan had been to use nanites as part of a self-repairing system. But with this new discovery, they’d be able to drastically decrease damage to the domes in the first place. Their research so far had indicated that the Romulan element was very resilient.::
Rahman: I see. Any chance we can apply this element for our own use?
Rosek: ::nods:: We believe that if we can find enough of the element on the planet’s surface, we can study it and produce an isotope with similar properties that can easily replicated. We’re confident that if we can come up with an isotope, we could use it to shield vulnerable sections of the ship from tetryon radiation and increase the efficiency of ships systems, including communications, by 25 percent.
Rahman: That's very promising.
::Lael watched as Rahman set the PADD down lightly. She couldn’t help the wide grin on her face. She’d worked on projects with others before, but this was different. It felt like her baby...a project almost exclusively her own. Something like this could make a big difference for a lot of people.::
Rahman: With all the infrastructure projects Starfleet has been tasked with in the Shoals, a new innovation to help counter the effects of tetryon radiation could prove substantial beyond just Veritas. It's exciting.
Rosek: ::smiles:: It is. ::pauses:: I must admit, I find Dr. Alentonis’s knowledge and dedication impressive. With your permission, I’d like him to be a part of the team that goes down in search of the element. His expertise would be invaluable.
Rahman: Of course! We'd be remiss not to use him as a resource. In fact, he'll be staying with us a little longer.
::She arched an eyebrow at that surprising bit of news. Granted, the professor was surprisingly pleasant company and she could see how he was considered an expert in his field. But she’d gotten the impression that he much preferred sitting behind a desk to traveling in space. She distinctly recalled reading his profile, specifically noting what had happened to his last expedition team.::
Rosek: ::arches an eyebrow:: That’s...interesting. It was my impression that Dr. Alentonis wasn’t too keen on adventure.
Rahman: We're still finalizing the details with his university, but please do include him with your investigation of not just this element but any other projects where you think he might be useful.
Rosek: ::nods and smiles:: Happily, ma’am.
::She had a couple of projects started; but at the moment, she most needed him to assist in locating the element.::
Rosek: o0 One project at a time. 0o
Rahman: Was there anything else, commander?
Rosek: ::shakes her head:: This should cover it. ::pauses:: I’ll start assembling a team.
Rahman: ::arches an eyebrow:: I needn't remind you to make sure to find some time for yourself while we're still in orbit for the next few days, yes?
::Lael laughed softly, recalling a similar lecture last shoreleave. It seemed that old habits died hard, but really this was her idea of a fun shoreleave--exploring someplace new and breathing something besides the recycled air of the ship. It was likely they’d need climbing gear of some sort in case they located deposits inside caves in the mountainous regions of the planet. Though the thought of climbing for the first time since her surgery was a bit daunting, it was also exciting. She missed the exhilaration that came along with carefully scaling a difficult rockface.::
Rosek: ::grins:: No, ma’am. You don’t.
