//First Officer’s Log, Stardate 239505.26

Repairs on the Veritas are progressing nicely, and we’ve brought the geological survey lab online full time while we map this previously unknown M class planet in the Shadows.  I’m looking forward to spending some time planetside and exploring what this new world has to offer. In a few minutes, I have a meeting with Captain Rahman, and after that, we’ll be assembling teams to head to the surface. //

((Ready Room, USS Veritas))

:: Mei’konda had gotten to know Rahman well enough by now that he was fairly certain he could recognize the expression on her face.  It was a combination of masked amusement and sternness that she had to be able to muster at a moment’s notice. He cleared his throat, leaned back in the seat, and crossed one leg over the other. ::

Rahman: Well, I suppose the good news for you is that if I took that third pip away now, it’d make me look bad for having just given it to you a few weeks ago.

Mei’konda: Not a bad waay to think of it, Captain.

:: While Rahman lifted her cup to her lips to take a sip, the Caitian continued. ::

Mei’konda: After all, we sustaiined only minor daamage and a few bumps and bruises, and we /did/ help to saave the away team.

:: The mug came down, and Rahman was smirking more openly now.  The Caitian hadn’t ever exactly been worried, but it was still a relief. ::

Rahman: I didn’t realize you still had that in you, to be honest. For many officers, the more pips they collect on their collars, the more conservative they become in their actions.

:: Lifting his hand up to brush his collar thoughtfully, Mei’konda ran a finger along the three gold pips there while he answered. ::

Mei’konda: I would haave preferred to be that way, Captain.  I’m not the most… leaap into action officer in the fleet, as you well know.  But I didn’t see maany options.

::She nodded.::

Rahman: Mmm-hmmm. Actually, it reminded me of our final mission on the Mercury you helped execute.

:: Now there was a time that Mei’konda preferred not to remember.  The Mercury had been crippled, nearly destroyed. But in the end, they’d come out on top.  Resting both hands on his knees, Mei’konda nodded slowly. ::

Mei’konda: …This went a little more smoothly thaan that, thankfully.

Rahman: Of course, you’re fortunate Veritas is a bit more resilient than a deep space science vessel. Engineering tells me the damage isn’t too appalling.

:: Mei’konda shook his head, and tapped the PADD he’d left on her desk with the full report. ::

Mei’konda: Yes.  Commander Rosek tells me thaat all will be well in underr six hours.

:: Rahman let out a chuckle, and Mei’konda smiled slightly right back at her. ::

Rahman: Well, I certainly won’t be forgetting your dramatic entrance anytime soon...

Mei’konda: Just as long as it doesn’t become known as the Mei’konda Maneuver… I’d raather that be a paarticularly efficient waay of maapping a solar system.

Rahman: Response

:: They both paused as the door chime rang out, and Rahman called out. ::

Rahman: Ah, Dr. Alentonis. Please come in.

:: Mei’konda aimed a pleasant nod back toward the middle-aged professor.  He’d had some mild reservations about how useful or resilient Alentonis was going to be, but those had disappeared the moment they’d walked into that Romulan morgue and the human had held his composure. ::

Alentonis: Thank you, captain. :: He gave a nod of greeting toward the Caitian. :: Commander. :: Then took up the unoccupied chair opposite the captain’s desk. :: You wanted to see me?

Mei’konda: Good to see you, Professor.

Rahman: Commander Mei’konda and I were just discussing the recent excitement we’ve had during the discovery of this lost Romulan colony. Speaking of which, we could use your expertise on cataloging the structures and other artifacts that remain on the planet.

:: Alentonis appeared thoughtful to Mei’konda, who unfolded his hands and tipped his furry muzzle back toward the human. ::

Alentonis: Of course, captain. My services are at your disposal for as long as you need them.

:: Then, Rahman made the offer. ::

Rahman: Would you be interested in staying aboard for a bit?

Alentonis: In a civilian capacity, or a science recruit? Granted, I have no idea how Starfleet handles their enlisted personnel...but I would like to help.

:: That was an easy enough question for Mei’konda to answer. ::

Mei’konda: Well, as I’m sure you know, all civiilians who are to be on assignment aboard a starship for longer than a few weeks need to go through emergency traiining, so you know what to do when certain alerts are called, if we’re at general quaarters, that sort of thing.  I’ll maake sure you have that training, but you’ll still be a civiilian.

Rahman: Response

Alentonis: Of course. :: He paused thoughtfully. :: Water will be fine.  I can start by telling you a bit about my progress, since I haven’t had a chance to fully brief the commander since then.

:: Tipping his head slightly and raising his ears, Mei’konda listened attentively. ::

Mei’konda: Please do.

Rahman: Response

Alentonis: Well, I’ll begin with the box. Due to my background in metallurgy, I was able to determine it is called reskariaehhrr, a rare Romulan type element. The name translates to “metal knife” in Standard, but that’s not nearly as interesting as the metallurgic properties. Due to the natural thickness of the metal, it is tetryon proof. Commander Blair walked inside the box and didn’t find any radiation messing with his gadget. In addition, the metal itself has a very high melting point. I am still working my way through the science logs to see if I can find anything else about it.

:: Now that was a mouthful.  Mei’konda didn’t bother taking notes since he was sure that Alentonis had already filed a report about it. ::

Mei’konda: Hm.  It must be somethiing more than the density of the metal, though.  Because tetryons are naative to subspaace, they move through such thiings easily.  The element must interaact with subspaace somehow.
