(( OOC - This is just a quick backsim to cover the gap between the Marketta and the current sims taking place in the jungle. ))

((Edria City. Shadow’s Edge.))

:: The Marketta’s transporters left Evan feeling slightly queasy, but after weeks spent on the drab pirate ship, he didn’t care. Mild nausea was a small price to pay for solid ground under his feet once again. ::

:: Unlike the other settlements Evan had visited on this world, Edria City had an air of grandeur to it. Had he seen a holoimage of the city’s skyline a year or two earlier, he’d have assumed he was looking at one of the core Federation colonies. Grand spires and towering skyscrapers set against a gorgeous tropical sky. As he walked the streets, he found bustling transporter hubs, beautiful public parks, and incredible displays of sculpture and other art. ::

:: The projection of paradise gave Evan a false sense of security. ::

:: Shortly after arriving, the half-Vulcan had started gathering information. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear there was little for him to do. Not if he wanted to keep a low profile. ::

:: By all accounts, Veritas was still a week out - though they were making good time. He had thought he could begin an investigation of his own, but with the governor’s mansion on lockdown and the governor himself in an “undisclosed location,” there wasn’t much he could do on that front either. ::

:: So, he’d turned to the local news service. And that was where Evan realized he and Saj might run into trouble. It appeared that several “unidentified sources” had placed a number of suspicious people with Vulcan and Romulan features in the area around the governor’s mansion in the hours before the attack. Some sources even claimed to have seen the men who had killed the Starfleet captain. They’d had pointed ears. Allegedly. ::

:: Despite the unsubstantiated claims, it didn’t take Evan long to realize that the colony’s formerly welcoming attitude towards so-called “pilgrims” had been replaced with suspicion and fear. ::

:: This first became obvious when Evan and Saj had been turned away from lodgings at least ten times on that first night. When they did find a place to stay, Evan had been forced to turn over most of the credits they’d borrowed from Oskari in exchange for a small room with two narrow mats spread out on a cold metal floor. The next morning, they were informed that they would need to move on. ::

:: What was worse, Evan had the distinct feeling that he was being watched at every turn. Though he would occasionally spot the odd person staring at him or Saj, though, he always felt like he was missing something obvious. More importantly, he had the distinct impression that they were in danger. ::

:: So, Evan came up with a plan. ::

:: He sent Saj with a list of supplies they would need and asked the young Romulan to meet him at the nearby transporter station in two hours. ::

:: Meanwhile, Evan arranged for an automated message to be sent to Veritas when it arrived in orbit. It had taken him a few hours to come up with a code that would be obscure enough to be undetected by any prying eyes, but understandable enough for Rahman and her crew to figure it out. ::

:: In the end, he’d added a fan oscillation he’d meant to represent a time, as well as a morse code distortion that would translate to a simple message: West of Drosera. ::

:: A short time later, he and Saj were setting up camp in the wilds in that location. ::
