“Pulling Back The Veil: Part II”

((Kiessa Monastery, Bajor))

Brodie: First time? Really? Well, in that case, I hope you enjoy your visit and find the cultural heritage to your liking. I know Vulcan is famous for its monasteries and temples - very much a culture in kin here on Bajor I’m sure.

She nodded in agreement with Brodie but quickly interjected.

Dar: You need to try the food as well, we have some of the best food in the quadrant although I might be a bit biased on that.

The Vulcan woman nodded succinctly. It sounded like a nice perspective.

They all moved to where Commander Brodie had indicated a rather sizable fire was already going. She glanced up and saw the first twinkle of a star in the already darkening sky.

Brodie: Please, come and join us by the fire. The monks here, in the fine tradition of monasteries the galaxy over, have a very fine spring wine you simply must try. It’s best warmed and has a wonderful spice to it.

Dar: Just don’t drink too much, it can sneak up on you quickly.

She looked over at Kalib and chuckled.

Dar: Why don’t you go and put our things in one of the tents, your choice.

Kalib: Ok.

While mother and son were having this conversation, the doctor took one of the bottles and handed out several glasses to the people present. She poured the last one for herself. Before taking a sip, she inhaled the fruity scent of the wine, and then, took a small swig of it.

It was really palatable, despite the strong alcoholic aftertaste in the back of the mouth. Fortunately, alcohol had little effect on Vulcans, so she feared no intoxication.

Beside, without gestation Kalib took their bags and began walking towards where the accommodation was set up, watching him she waited till he was out of earshot and then looked to Brodie, Samara and Alieth.

Dar: Ok, sorry to jump into this with both feet but I have read the reports on what happened on the ship in Sickbay, now can someone tell me what exactly this means for my son?

She looked slowly among them and then let her gaze stop on Alieth.

Alieth: The ramifications to the future are unknown, but we must be aware that Kalib may suffer further telephatic inferences. I performed the melt to release him from the influence of one or more unknown entities, but it is appropriate that I trained him to avoid similar developments in the future.

The Vulcan crossed her hands in her lap and made a pause, expecting that first piece of information to come through. It was already a lot to chew on.

In due course, the counselling officers took the floor, mellowing the moment.

Brodie: Well, obviously I wasn’t present in sickbay

Samara: It’s all a bit of a blur...it happened quite quickly and I can’t comment on the mind meld. The commander said that his father was El-Aurian?

She sighed and nodded.

Brodie looked from Sam to Dar and back again. He wasn't sure if it was the use of the term ‘was’.

Dar: Yes his father is El-Aurian, unfortunately I do not know where he is or if he’s even still alive for that matter.

Samara: I’m sorry...

Brodie: I’m no expert on El-Aurian physiology but I did do a little digging into the literature. There were some scant details but the archives said they are noted as being “extraordinarily sensitive to disturbances in the space/time continuum”.

The doctor gave a brief nod

Alieth: This may imply an important development of the midbrain Telepathic function develops in this area, and it is possible that Kalib's unique genetics make him a sort of…  :: the vulcan took a brief moment to search for the easiest definition of the concept for non-telephatic beings, but at the end she had to rely on a rather weak one:: ...host.

Dar mentally chewed on what was being put forward to her by Alieth. She always tried to approach things from a very neutral position, but in this case her emotions as a mother overruled anything else.

Dar: Host? What exactly does that mean?

The doctor glanced at the counsellor, in search of a better way to approach the issue.

Alex took a sip from his glass and blinked heavily. Elandra wasn’t wrong...it was strong stuff. The monks of Buckfast Abbey would have been proud.

Brodie: This...device...whatever it was, seemed to be existing between realities - at least that’s what the readings we saw in the engineering section suggested. This...tear that was created must have been what Kalib was able to sense. I can’t speak for the mind meld, however, or the effects that may have had.

Alieth: The mind-space I found was very confusing: Kalib has a powerful but untrained mind and his distress about the whole situation was evident. Also what we found was really strange, absolutely alien minds, which only increased his anguish.

She took a brief sip of wine before she resumed her speech.
