((Corridor in front of the Marine Quarterdeck, Deck 9, USS Thor, On the night before Thor's arrival to New Bajor's system))

The plan had been elaborated with infinite detail. Nothing could go wrong. Alieth glanced at her accomplice, who wagged her fluffy tail cheerfully, somehow excited by the strange late-night walk.

Alieth squatted next to the animal and fondled her heavy neck, which earned her a lick that almost knocked her to the floor. She hadn't yet grown accustomed to such... slobbery displays of affection, but it had become obvious that the mastiff wasn't going to let up in that behaviour.

So she accepted it for what it was, and with more than evident displeasure.

Putting the white box on the floor, the doctor rummaged around with her (clean) hand inside her ample black robe until she found the weapon and pulled it out.

The weapon was a sphere, with 98.9% perfection over the perfect sphericity.

The diameter of the sphere was 6.7 centimetres and it weighed exactly 56.5 grams. Most of its surface was covered by a synthetic fabric that mimicked an old Earth fabric, fuzzy and tangled, which was absent in a series of wavy lines across its surface, like scars on an animal fur, which showed the pale material underneath. Except for these scars, the weapon was bright yellow, which made it particularly striking to human eyes, but unaesthetic to someone who came from a planet dominated by the ochres and reds of the desert.

As soon as the weapon was revealed, her accomplice showed clear signs of agitation, and began to shift the weight from her right legs to her left as her tail moved from a placid wag to a movement so fast that it was barely readable.

Without a word, Alieth presented the weapon, just out of reach of her accomplice and held it up.

The mastiff wailed, so eager to fulfil her part of the plan to the point she made a motion to stand on her hind legs to reach the weapon, a gesture that was stopped when Alieth raised a warning finger.

Alieth: ::in an admonishing whisper:: Manners

The dog sat stiffly, but without turning her muzzle away from the object of her desire.

Alieth smiled faintly and waved her hand where she held the weapon.

The door to the marine quarterdeck opened with a hiss, revealing the darkness on the other side. Only a couple of marines were in sight, more asleep than awake, performing a guard duty whose main purpose was to keep them tired.

One of them stood up, intrigued to know who was coming to their den in the small hours of the night. However, he could never see who it was, although he did hear the word that activated the weapon.

Alieth: Fetch

The ensuing chaos allowed a miniscule shadow with the silhouette of a Vulcan to penetrate unnoticed on the deck and head for the very heart of the marine complex, with a certain crime in mind.
