Stardate:
::The morning sun was already cutting rays through the almost permanent haze of smog that clouded the sprawling metropolis, shafts turned into shades of orange and yellows as they refracted off the metallic skyscrapers like a celestial being was casting spotlights on a living play.
Al'Akir's governance had always been a troubled one, every day seemed more and more like fighting against his own cabinet then struggling to improve the lot of the millions of workers who resided in the capital city. Corruption was rampant, yet still he won every election because he had faith, belief that despite the bureaucratic hell he could (and had) made a difference to the lives of as many people as possible.
There were a few ministers that had the same, perhaps naive, view that political moves should benefit the people but it seemed the endless corporations that did business on this world would always carry more sway then anyone that resided within the ancient city hall.
The thought of it all made him let out his usual long morning sigh, his Efrosian whiskers flickering in the created breeze. That was only the start of the trouble, already he had a missed call from Senior Inspector Jemet. She wasn't the Commissioner of Police, she was actually trustworthy unlike that corrupt oaf which made it all the more troubling.
A call worth returning, despite the trouble it would inevitably bring::
Al'Akir: "Inspector Jemet, you wished to speak with me?"
Jemet: :: frowning :: “Yes Governor. There’s been a murder in the Ja’Gara Ward.”
Al'Akir: "Murders are sadly nothing new..."
Jemet: “A DNA scan has identified him as a Federation national by the name of Boris Vladamir Malinov. He came here about three weeks ago from Starbase 118.”
::That gave him a moment of pause, he knew the last ship from Starbase 118 was carrying passengers, he'd gone to meet Madame Lurtz in person, as usual pandering to the magnates rather then doing anything of importance and he briefly remembered another man skulking in her shadow looking distinctly uncomfortable::
Al'Akir: "Malinov... he must have arrived on Madame Lurtz's ship, do you remember her?"
Jemet: “Vaguely. Isn’t she something to do with tribbles? I remember you mentioning her once or twice.”
Al'Akir: "That's the one, I believe her ship is the Golden Dawn. There hasn't been another ship from that station for weeks, at least nothing that wasn't an automated garbage scow. What was it over? Trade debt?"
Jemet: :: hesitantly :: “We found a hypospray containing a doseage of All Time High.”
::ATH... that abominable abbreviation that seemed to crop up in every meeting he'd attended for the last several weeks. A new drug, predictably appearing out of the blue with not a single shred of history, any other investigation stalling to a halt as the tendrils of the corrupt brought the gears of justice to a shuddering halt::
Al'Akir: "A Federation wanted man, dead in our city... I believe I may have to contact Starbase 118 myself. Would you object to Starfleets direct involvement in the investigation?"
::It was a loaded question, Jemet knew full well her leadership was on the take as much as he did. With Starfleet's aid, they could be cut out, no amount of bribery would stop then turning over every rock and poking every avenue of investigation. With any luck, they might even blow out some of the rot that had been festering in the governing body for years::
Jemet: :: looking around and lowering her voice :: “I was hoping you might suggest that. Oralius knows who I can trust thesedays.”
Al'Akir: "I'll see to it Inspector, for now I recommend you duplicate any reports you may have made and submit them securely to my office. Things do tend to go missing, don't they?"
Jemet: “Understood sir.” :: she reached forward, tapped something on her monitor and the screen went dead. ::
::It was hope, a faint glimmer perhaps, but something at least he could cling to. Tapping his private console he secured his line, hunting down the closest he could find to the Starbases' command frequency::
Al'Akir: =/\= "This is Governer Al'Akir of Tillana V to Starbase 118 Command, formally requesting your assistance following the appearance of wanted fugitive Boris Malinov. I regretfully need to inform you that he has been killed, my Police force are labeling it as an act of murder and I would personally like to extend an invitation to conduct a joint investigation into the cause and put a stop to any illegal activity that he was partaking in, for both our mutual benefits"
