(( Flashback ))

(( Outside Warehouse 9, Level #20 – Khosla Commerce Outpost ))

:: Each minute seemed to last an eternity. This was a bustling station, busy with commerce, and with a sizeable permanent population. One would think the emergency medical services would be more prompt. Given the Ferengi administrative power over the station, she figured a bride could’ve moved them along… Too bad she didn’t include one in her frantic call.

The pain in her hands was a subtle but constant throbbing now. The shock from the trigger in the access panel leaving them quite a mess. The fact that the main was waning worried her and she wondered if she would have permanent nerve damage.

She felt foolish for considering her own health as the life of her partner hung in the balance. Each second of each minute felt like it would be his last. She was no field medic, but she had the training necessary to negate some of the wounds encountered in the field. Unfortunately, the disruptor blast at close range left a more perilous wound than her field medkit could handle. That, and there was some sort of anticoagulant infused in the blast. She couldn’t even slow his bleeding.

They had been partners for at least a year, and although there were pain points (as there are in any relationship), she had begun to see him as a little brother, a friend. She wasn’t sure what word to put to it, but their relationship transcended an investigative partnership.

A Klaxon sounded throughout the corridor and the access panel on the hatchway to the cargo bay turned red. She had come so close, but once again, Vek Karel had evaded capture. This time felt different, though. The violence had escalated and the damage was personal. They warehouse storage area had been vented to space, and Kalara could only hope that perhaps Karel had burnt a bridge with the Khosla Station administrators… ::

Avran: ~ They’re here now… ~ :: she communicated to Ataren as a Vulcan.. - no, a Romulan nurse ran towards them. Behind her, a human rushed forth carrying an elaborate yet haphazard medkit. It matched the motif of this station… ::

Nurse: Stabilize and tag for transport.

:: Her voice was stern, forceful- yet, Kalara could feel compassion behind them. ::

Nurse: You can meet us in the Medical Ward. Level 8, section A.

:: The nurse added before Kalara could even inquire. The technician attached a small transponder to Ataren’s shoulder, and Kalara almost winced. Her instinct was to push him away, to yell “don’t touch him!” -- her facial expression must’ve betrayed her. ::

Nurse: We’ll see you shortly. :: She tapped the device and the trio of them de-materialized into a transport beam. ::

:: Kalara look at her own hands, burnt and blistering. ::

Avran: oO Don’t worry- I’m fine…. Oo :: She couldn’t help but think sarcastically. ::

:: Their mission had been a failure. She just hoped that Ataren hadn’t paid for their failure with his life. ::
